There have been a lot of Triumphs in my family. My mother had a Standard 10 Companion followed by a Herald estate in which I learned to drive. My father had 2 successive Triumph 2000s. I had 2 successive Herald 13/60 convertibles followed by a Dolomite Sprint. The latter was very quick when it was working which, sadly was not very often. I could never be sure of reaching my destination without breaking down. A pity because it was otherwise a lovely car.

I've had three Triumph Heralds. 1250 c reg reg with a white side stripe (1st car) 1360 three years old in 1972 and a 1200 in blue in the 70's. Great cars for a young man in those days.

Thank you very much for helping to revive many fond memories of my Dolly Sprint JKT 66P in Mimosa Yellow. I ashamedly remember being overhauled by an unmarked police Rover 3500s P6 on the A3 Esher bypass heading south whilst trying to get past a big engined (3 litre?) Ford Granada who refused to pull over from the outside lane and let me pass. We both reached around 90mph in the process before he reluctantly gave way. Perhaps it was because he saw the looming P6 in his rear view and I didn't! Unfortunately plod decided to pick on me and I copped a fine but no points. Ahh those were the days. 😀

I recall in the 70"s changing a clutch in a Herald one Saturday morning and we did most of it from inside the car. There was a panel on the tunnel close to the gear change that could be removed and gave terrific access to the clutch housing. Nice cars.

Yes I remember doing many of those. Herald clutch was a pretty easy job. Gearbox repairs on the 1300's were a constant source of frustration though 😬

I owned a Dolomite Sprint. Amazing car, great handling, we fitted lower profile tires, was like a go-cart. Changed the needles in the SU's, better exhaust, a small bit of porting on the 16 valve head. You didn't need to do much to convince one of these to fly. Wish I still had it.

I remember doing lots of those. They were a pain in the arse.😏 We referred to them as the "doughnuts".

HA, you are absolutely correct about the Triumph 2.5 PI Mk 2. A friend of mine had one and if he went any further than the local shops, it invariably came back on the back of an AA Lorry ! Needless to say, he didn't keep it long ! Nice video again - thanks for the effort you put into producing them for us - MUCH appreciated.

Another great collection. I like the Vitesses,particularly the ones with two tone paint and webasto rooves.The rare Herald Coupes are lovely and I like the Herald fastback prototype.My favourite Triumph would be a 2000/2500 estate preferably with a roll back sunroof.I remember reading a magazine article about an estate with a Stag V8 in it,now there’s an intriguing combination.

I agree that the Herald would be an excellent choice for a first classic car, do keep an eye on the bonnet hinges though! I prefer Mk2 2500, always stunning cars. Slightly more humble are the 'dolly's ' but still a nice car. I knew someone who put a Rover V8 in one which if you have ever looked at those engine bays you will see that it's got the space for such s swap. Thanks for sharing this collection. At the time of writing I could not read other comments but I am sure that was just a technical issue and nothing to do with you Sir.👍

@@oldclassiccarUK true l should listen to the headline more closely. I was interesting and good to see Triumph. I’ve owned a lot of different Triumph since I was 17 years old. A Herald was first. Thanks for a good answer. Bob

My recollection of Triumphs which I’ve driven over the years run from an early Spitfire belonging to my girlfriend at that time! It ran well until we came to recover it from an underground car park in London to discover that the gearbox had jammed in reverse. A few deft strokes with a screwdriver seemed to recover 2/3/4 gears enough to get us back home to Devon. It was new so still under warranty and two more gearboxes later it went well! The next was a Dolomites Sprint which went really well. Ironically it was owned by an Alfa Romeo dealer who used the Dolly for his private use. He had to give up driving and I used to chauffeur him in the Dolly which was in fact great fun. My father also had a couple of Triumphs, both 2.5PI’s which went well but were no match for the Volvo Amazons they replaced. It was embarrassing to see my father drive the Volvos in preference to the PI’s as he had a Leyland franchise!! The Volvos were much better build quality and also outperformed the PI’s.

My grandad had a MK1 2.5 PI estate! It rarely ran and did about 10 mpg when it did! Soon changed for a great and reliable Avenger estate.

I bought a new Triumph 1500 in 1973, the FWD version, before they switched to RWD and TC. It was brown of course this being the 70’s.

Most enjoyable Richard, you are right about the Lucas injection it was truly dreadful! I restored a Mk2 2ltr Vitesse convertible with a 2000 overdrive gearbox. I ran her on twin Strombergs, I also fitted wire wheels a black duck hood a tan interior and sprayed her black. Without fail the first thing people said was “they were never black you know”. 🤣

Mike, I envy you. Sadly mine was sold in the 60s. Loved the Laycock Overdrive.

If you have access n the time Please make a video on ALVIS CARS? Especially THE TD 21 drophead coupe? Alvis cars are a poor man's RR what the Manager said to me when i told him these cars are Brilliant After I delivered one when it was in the garage for some servicing only drove 1 in 1967 for a short distance But that car was pure quality n class it looked magnificent too n the leather Interior was just magic for coach build quality Britain is the Best
