    Alternate answers that are contrary to Jonas How to play 1:01 You can use Use retroarch with runahead and a dell p2414h - this actually runs faster than NES + CRT 1:30 if you you have a slow LCD, you will have several frames delay (50ms = 3 frames). 2:24 No, but you can hack it. PC Emulator is better anyway 3:05 Yes. There is only one preview. DAS is slower so you will have to learn how to skillstop or hypertap (modern games have slower DAS) 4:02 a capture card (recommended GV-USB2 $40) is your best bet, or EZCAP ($10) Gameplay / Mechanics 7:36 Due to a bug in programming (base 16 vs base 10 number systems) 10:45 The game speeds up to 1 frame per cell. DAS isn't fast enough to reach the sides. The only way to overcome it is to tap. 13:21 Without soft drop points, 1503600 when you start from 18 and end on Level 29. From 19, 1542000 if you start on 18 and level 29

    17:24 (wrong comment in chat) max score for level 18 with tetrises only: about 1.49M; for level 19 with tetrises only 1.53M. yes, 90K difference between the transitions, but then for level 18 start still 10 levels to play and for 19 start only 9. In other words: you should compare the score difference at 140 lines (level 19 transition). max score for level 18 is 22800*33+24000*2 = 800400, and max score for level 19 is 24000*35 = 840000, so only 39600 difference, but could only matter for players who can play on 19 as good as on 18. Having played the game for a month, I know how hard level 19 is and only the best of the best of the best players (or computers) can get a tetris rate >70%.

    Retroarch has a new feature where you can negate the lag by "running ahead" a certain number of frames. I think they do this by having a second emulator running behind the scenes which is ahead of the one you're seeing on screen. Seems to work pretty well, but I haven't played on a CRT to verify that the experience is comparable.

    Lv18 130-line transition is more often thought as a bug rather than a feature. Speculation is that the hold-A-to-add-10-levels is a last-minute decision (thus it appears on the user manual but not in-game) and did not get enough debugging.

  • @davidjennings2300

    @davidjennings2300

    3 жыл бұрын

    I doubt this is true. The level 18 transition is quite intentional. Plus it's not like level 9 would be the fastest speed they put in the game, so they had to have a feature like that in mine.

    for the emulator thing, BizHawk and Mesen are the 2 most accurate emulators for NES, use one of those if you have to use emu. You will still have more delay than console no matter what emu you use, but it's still recommended to have the most accurate emulation you can.

    What are your thoughts on SNES Tetris? I only play it seriously on the NES but got hold of the Tetris / Dr Mario cart out of curiosity. Apart from it sounding like a castrated hamster when you score a Tetris is seems to behave very different to its NES counterpart, I’ve noticed a lot of instances of just endlessly getting the same piece, which just doesn’t usually happen on the NES, the game is no where near as fun.

    Hi Jonas (hopefully you read the comments). I have recently gotten back into tetris. But I"ve never left either. I'm in training to come to the next tournament. I'm playing on a LCD tv at the moment unfortunately - will have an old school tv soon. So one question - will an LCD tv really mess with me that much? At the moment I can consistently hit 400 - 500k starting at level 10. I used to play at 18 (20 years ago) but it seems faster than it used to me. Maybe it's the old age (I'm 41). Or is it the lag? Basically I pretty much die at 19. But I used to be able to play it. I've seen the kill screen plenty of times. Is it the LCD holding me back?

    If you're going to play on a LCD, do so on a computer monitor where the latency is much lower. Modern TVs are terrible in this respect. Some have a "Game Mode", but it's still probably 8x+ the delay of computer monitor which is in the single digit milliseconds.

  • @Ayatron34
    @Ayatron344 жыл бұрын

    Personally, and this is just my opinion, hypertapping should be made tournament illegal. It's clearly damaging to the hand and wrist, Jonas can feel it, so encouraging it in young people who's joints and bones are still developing - I don't see how that's safe given the amount of practice required. I know Koryan gets away with it seemingly, but the organisers need to ask themselves if its something they can ethically promote to the youth.

    "The game developers decided that to cap the scoring and keep it kind of an even progression they would have you transition sooner. So thats why at a 130 lines you transition to level 19 instead of 180." Wrong. It is a bug in the code.The number of lines you cleared is stored as a bcd number, and the code devides it by 10, and compares the result to the current level. The issue is, that the current level is a normal, hexadecimal number and the number of lines divided by 10 is a bcd number. So if you start on 18 (decimal), that is 0x12 (hexadecimal), and if you reach 130 lines, after the division by 10, you get 0x13 (because it is bcd), it is bigger than the current level (0x12) so you will advance to level 19. The fact that this bug makes the game more balanced (regarding scoring) is just pure luck.

  • @MW_1535

    @MW_1535

    (x) Doubt. It's not uncommon for developers to take advantage or quirks like this to solve problems. If you have a source where the developer says it's a bug then I'll believe it. Don't underestimate a developers creativity when solving problems especially when given strict hardware constraints.
