Classic Sunday Sermon: Becoming a Brick Wall of Integrity

Friends, our own wickedness and virtue belong to oneself. Though our communities and background stories affect our mind and will, nevertheless, the individual stands alone in the presence of God. We show God and the world who we are by the integrity of our moral acts. What we do defines who we are, and therefore we must cultivate the moral dimension of our life to avoid ethical calamity.
Bishop Barron is currently in Rome participating in the Synod on Synodality. For the next seven weeks, we will be airing a Classic Sermon. Bishop Barron will return with all new sermons (and a new set!) in time for November 19, the Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time.

I work in a large hospital. Unfortunately, some patients are often ignored. These patients may be considered the "least. among us," or those who cannot speak for themselves: those with a mental illness, a developmental challenge, or those with dementia. Im no saint, but it's easy to be kind to these folks; they are children of God. Every day, I pray as I walk into work that people will see Jesus in me. I hope they do.

Jesus, hear my prayers because I am weak. As a single parent things are hard on me both of my sons are autistic and my hours to work are limited because I’m now homeschooling them. I’m constantly struggling to provide the basic necessities for them I’m so ashamed. I suffered an heart attack and I’m battling lupus I’m overwhelmed. Father God hear my prayers. I constantly struggle to pay my bills and struggle to provide groceries. BUT I KEEP FAITH. Even though I want to give up. Jesus please take the fear from my heart. Father God it is you that gives me the strength to keep going. I praise you Father even as I fear homelessness please continue to give me strength.

Dearest Bishop Robert Barron, I pray for you every day to lead us with wisdom, clarity, and a sense of unity, and for all delegates of the international Synod on Synodality meeting with Pope Francis to listen carefully to one another with the guidance and leading of the Spirit, and for God’s will to be done (church people). Also, I have prayed for Bishop Joseph Strickland and all the Bishops for peace, mercy, and forgiveness through our Lord Jesus Christ (word on fire). Bishop, I know I am weak and sinful but I don't promote disorder and conflict and I don't let ignorance lead me down into the wrong lane. God bless you all! Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for us. Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us. Mary Queen of Heaven over Earth, pray for us. THANK YOU, Bishop Barron, for this sermon w/these observations & reflections from Ezekial 18. In a current culture that subscribes to the notion that "most everything is the fault of society or someone else", GOD tells us that we do have moral PERSONAL choices for which each of us is responsible. May GOD bless you, those you represent, & all other attendees at the Synod in Rome, & open to the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Father Steve Grunow asks this from us on behalf of Word on Fire: Please join the Word on Fire team in praying for the Church, our Holy Father, and all those who have been elected or invited to participate in the Synod on Synodality that is taking place in the month of October. In particular, I ask all of you for special prayers for Bishop Barron, who will be attending this synod as an elected delegate. He has been entrusted to represent his brother bishops from the United States and, by extension, the people of God. The work of the synod will be important. Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, has stressed how prayer is integral to the synod. This emphasis should strike us as significant because prayer reminds us not only of the Church’s but also our own dependence on God in Christ and instills in us a surrender of our will to him, the purpose of which is to assist us in becoming receptive to what God wants us to see and to do. Rezemos pelo Bispo Robert Barron na Missão de equilíbrio que irá desempenhar neste tão importante e complexo Sínodo.

I appreciate how Bishop Barron draws out an important idea from this text, that we are judged by our own decisions. It's illuminating to hear him describe how St. Thomas More stood for what he recognized, by faith, was right, even when the world suggested otherwise.

Absolutely correct! We define the person we are becoming by each moral act. We are building up, or tearing down. Man was made in God’s image. Consider yourself a three dimensional image, like a statue. Each wrong choice, each morally negative action, chips a bit away from your statue. Keep living that kind of life, and sooner or later you will have chipped enough away from your own image that it would be difficult or even impossible to recognize God in it. How sad that would be!

I appreciate so much your focus on the Old Testament, but also more importantly your invitation to “take out our Bibles” (as you often say!😀) and read for ourselves more than just what’s read on a Sunday. Reading the Scripture, the whole Bible, is so liberating and, for me at least, it gives so much more meaning to the Sacraments, especially the Eucharist and Confession. May the Lord continue to bless you Bishop Barron!🙏

Thank you Father, Amen. I started a painting on Sept 2023, just a few days ago with watercolour, it made me feel the silhouette and many stones places as bricks, I thought that it looks as if it could be laying down in an ancient pavement but no. I could see the importance of every circle around as it constructs together with solemn seriousness and respect. The body is looking down with reverence or nodding, or with a bow towards witch it cannot see. It humbles me to paint without thinking, we need to stand strong and firm, stronger than ever together. Thank you Father. I don't know what act to do anymore, and yet yes, to define my character would be a meditation. Amen 🙏🏼 💐💐💐

I think every decision is a moral decision. This wasn't a main point of this Sermon, but from a moral philosophy perspective, it seems more likely that decisions lie on a scale of moral effect instead of some line beyond sandwich choice where decisions suddenly become moral. The most essential! You can be very unhappy, but if you are moraly whole or 《wholing》the heart of your heart becomes as the sun that shines on the other side of the clouds; it creates a division of perspectif and the higher one will transform your life in all it's aspects even if a division remains in the heart.. As Ezechiel broke the false tradition baked in the minds of the people, you'll ses everything in a new, far more subtle Light. But as my father told me, knowing more is suffering more. It's subtle and demands perseverance, the drug of Wisdom is 《 freedom》 of social pressure. It is unhealthy for your image, but it is godly for your soul. Ezechiel leads us out of the trap of unhealthy conformity.

I really enjoyed you sharing actus hominis and actus humanus. I suffer a lot through spiritual oppression and even though I resist I almost always end up in some rant about some random subject that I know very little about and through a personal revelation I had been told that my participation in the evil is mostly just a response to their attack and not of my own free will. So responding to something isn’t the same as participating in something, I like how I can now identify it as either actus hominis or actus humanus. Thank you.

This is an amazing sermon; thank you for sharing your wisdom, insights and integrity with the world. I wish every person on this planet would hear this and pay heed to this vitality important message as it is undeniably true. Dear God, please help me to internalize this message and to make the morally correct choice each time I am faced with such a choice, so that, as Bishop Barron eloquently explains, I will be creating my character to be what You and I both want it to be. I pray the same prayer for each and every person on this planet. May we all make the morally correct choice each and every time we are faced with such a choice, and may we encourage one another to be morally courageous and correct, no matter the opposition we face or how challenging that might be, so that when we each stand on our own before our Lord and Savior on the day of our final judgment, we will each be the person God created us to be, pleasing in our Lord’s eyes, and peacefully content with how we lived our lives.

Every time you make a choice you are turning the central part of you, the part of you that chooses, into something a little different from what it was before...you are slowly turning this central thing either into a heavenly creature or a hellish creature. C S Lewis
