Classic Game Room reviews the 25th ANNIVERSARY LIMITED EDITION of SUPER MARIO ALL STARS for Nintendo Wii from Nintendo. The Super Mario Bros. 25th anniversary collection was released in 2010 and features four full-size Super Mario Bros. videogames, a wonderful, full color "history of Super Mario Bros." book and soundtrack CD. This Super Mario box set comes with Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels, Super Mario Bros. 2 and Super Mario Bros. 3. Note these are not the original 8-bit versions though, Super Mario All Stars was actually released for the SNES Super Nintendo in 1993 with updated 16-bit graphics and sound that may not appeal to die-hard fans of the 80's 8-bit originals. This CGR review of Super Mario Bros. 25th Anniversary Collection Super Mario All Stars for Nintendo Wii has Super Mario All Stars gameplay on Wii showing Super Mario Bros. game play in HD action.

I would pay good money for Super Mario Bros. 12 if that was the story.
All Stars was so awesome wen it first came out... anyone remember Nintendo Power magazine's challenge of beating Lost Levels without warping? If you mailed in a photo of you doing that, they sent you a "NO WARPING" iron-on patch with Mario on it. I got one :D

This was seriously dissapointing, it was $40 when it was first released and was just a simple rom dump, no bonus features of any sort. You would think Nintendo would have gone all out and included interviews with Shigeru Miyamoto, Koji Kondo and other legendary staff members on how the game was created, and include cool bonuses like commercials for Mario games and whatnot. Even if they were just going to dump some roms on the disc they could have at least added Super Mario World and the 8-bit versions of the games featured in Super Mario All Stars for historical context. Even if they were going to do this bare bones port they should have had a deluxe edition available that included Super Mario World, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, etc.

but hey, if we figure out how to edit the files and re-burn the disc, people could then theoretically put any vc game on a disc. This would be great considering the wii's vc service was discontinued

I hear ya man just a SNES rom. The controls even display as a snes controller. However, there was two versions of this. Just the game in a simple case and the game and case in a collector box. That had a bonus cd and art book but still it wasn't anything special. Considering it's Mario's big anniversary they should have went all out

I remembering buying it and taking it back the same day. It was shocking to buy a brand new game just to get a 1993 game that wasnt even the one with smw. No HD, nothing new added, just a middle finger by Nintendo saying, thanks for 25 years dips#@!
This review proves once again, that Mark is the best reviewer out there.
Truxton! Truxton! haha haha, I love it!
I wish Nintendo would have just packaged all 4 of these games and World onto a disc with NSMB graphics and called it "New Super Mario All Stars" instead of this $30 SNES ROM!

+jwathas I thought it was a bit cheap of them to not make it the version that came with SMBW included. I've stated it before elsewhere that cartridge gotta be one of the best compilations ever, at least in my opinion it is
super mario 12 was the one on the vectrex right? yeah, i distinctly remember the part with the car exploding guns, and everyone said "shit" as a reaction to everything. i also remember the guy who's like "i'd buy that for a coin!" good game
This was completely a unnecessary port, it is cheaper (At least in my country) to buy an original SNES and a original copy of the version that includes Mario world, I can't believe they basically just took the SNES rom and slap it into a CD and resell it for the same price.

At yet all of ya fanboys bought the damn thing haven't you?
It'll be interesting to hear what Mark has to say about the upcoming 'Nintendo Mini NES 30-in1'
If you have Super Mario All-Stars, then you don't need the original versions of Super Mario Bros. 1, 2, 3 and the Lost Levels.
ROFLMAO at the very end with that Robotic Voice, especially the part the ALIEN INVADERS.
Just did a quick search, and SMB12 (by order) is New Super Mario Bros. for the DS (I hope nintendo releases a dlc where luigi is robocop)
I think it would've been really cool if Nintendo would've modernized the graphics on this game and gave all the games 3D textures like in New Super Mario Bros. That would've really celebrated Mario's 25th anniversary and probably would've helped to improve sales of the game.
I actually really like this collection because as a younger gamer that started gaming with Super Mario 64, I never really had an opportunity to get these games. I got them and I downloaded Super Mario World of the Virtual Console as well. Plus the booklet and CD are nice. However, I do agree that they should have done more like what they're doing for Zelda, but I'm not unhappy with what I got in this collection. I love it anyway.
TRUXTON!!! HELLS YEAH! Mark wins at life forever
This could've been released for N64 or even the Gamecube. This is the reason we did not get the upgrade versions on the Snes. Big N got lazy same as they did porting smb dx on gbc and the sma series on gba but at least these handheld editions got some extras added into them as opposed to this.
@platano214
10 жыл бұрын
Typo * meant to say this is why we did not get these versions on the Virtual console because Nintendo was too lazy to outsource this project and create updated versions to these games. Heck Square Enix has done to their titles remaking their games many times over!!! but as long as new content is added the older generation of gamers that are nostalgic can look forward to replaying these gems as for the new gamers they'll enjoy it too... if they're into that genre.

I love it when Mark goes off on tangents XD
I personally have a hacked Xbox, PSP, and Wii, and my PSP has all the games i actually know. It works amazingly for on the go gaming.
This was a dumb idea of Nintendo in my opinion, even if it was a hit (was it?). Why would they leave out Super Mario World? That is an extra game you get in the collection (with proper, updated Luigi sprites) and they just left that out? What a selfish decision. I guess it would've been decent if they rereleased it on Wii if it included Super Mario World, but no. Just the original version of the SNES game and that's it. Nothing else. They could've easily ported this to Virtual Console, but no.

Super Mario 12, it's a really obscure one where Luigi was gunned down by criminals and then he was rushed to the hospital where he's actually declared dead but there's this drug organization that runs the police that decides to turn Luigi into a robot, a half man, half machine cyborg policeman fueled by baby food who wipes out crimes with excessive force. Somebody send this script to Nintendo... BIG TIME!
SNES also had Super Mario Allstsrs + World...on a cartridge. They should have included that and Yoshis island on a disc.
Nintendo made a dick move not including super mario world. I get that it wasn't origianlly on the first cartridge. At least I think it was.

Yeah, this costs $29.99 while I have seen carts containing both SMW and SMAS for $14.99.
Loved the original Mario Bros 1, 2 and 3. Never had an NES or SNES though. So this game was like a blessing for all those times I had to go to my friend's place after school just to play this game. Also SAVE SPACES are awesome...I could never have completed the originals in their NES form without save spaces.
Lol, cool Robocop reference XD 1:00 - 1:20
In addition to the All-Stars versions on here they should've also included the original 8-bit versions of all 4 games, Super Mario World, Super Mario 64, and Super Mario Sunshine (with Super Mario World 2, Luigi's Mansion, and Super Mario Land 1 and 2 and bonus extra games). the boxset should've had the complete soundtracks to all games up to Super Mario Galaxy 2 as well. now that would have been a real 25th anniversary. still bought it to play on the Wii but it could've been so much better :(.
I'll always love the old school Mario games, so many happy childhood gaming memories. Mario world is my fave though.
This package sold for $30 in 2010. It costs $21 total to download the same games included on this disc from the Virtual Console (it's the NES versions on the Virtual Console, but the games play virtually the same anyway). It'll take something mind-blowingly amazing to convince me that the disc is a better deal.
I was trying out this audio subtitles thing. Dude its so funny lol when Mark says "And my mistake" it says "And among the stake"
I’m so happy I bought this when it came out for the wii :D And I’m very glad they kept the snes graphics, it wouldn’t be the same if they had modern graphics :)
Truxton totally needs an anniversary remake =D.
@Millahtime He seems to be quite good at old-school arcade shooters.
I love the ultra explicit Robocop reference! :)
I have Mario 1, the real Mario 2 (not the US one) and Mario 3 on my Wii Virtual Console, and I still bought this. I love these games, and I love All Stars on the SNES, I wanted to play them again. Great buy :D
Lol,luigi robocop. Robot chicken should do a skit on that
The snes version is still the best compilation ever. One of my favorites on that system. This "Anniversary edition" however is more of a cash-in. At least Mark makes it more enjoyable.
SMB2 looks realy good! It's the only original Mario game I played back in the days on the NES, so I can't realy give my opinion about the other two, but I would realy like to play this version of SMB2 :)
YOU ARE THE BEST CLASSIC GAME REVIEWER EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The ending was epic lol XD
Definitely my favorite part of this collection is the Truxton song.
@Neocasko The Wii can read Dual Layer discs so it can use discs holding 8.5GB of data.
I haven't got a SNES and it would cost a grand to buy one so it is convenient to have it re released on Wii with some bonus content and great presentation. The All-Stars game itself looks good and I look forward to buying this game in a few months time.
For some reason I remember having a dream about more or less this exactly before I even knew it existed. "It's just Mario all-stars on a disc". ...
massive game in the 90s i still have this on the super nintendo but i like the 25th version on the wii its awsome to play through a home theate system you can really feel it abit disapointed that they didnt inclued super mario world and yoshis island now that would of been cool still its a old skool classic that ill play any time of the week
Okay, so I just played this through emulation on homebrew with my original wii. Maybe it was the fact that it was emulation (I doubt it though) but the gameplay wasn't even similar. I only had a chance to play Mario 3 and he jumps way higher than the original, especially after stomping on an enemy. It also seems a bit slower. It felt like it had the mechanics of super Mario world which would make sense since it's been redesigned to look similar and is played on the snes.
You really outdid yourself on this one xD
I grabbed this as an X-Mas gift for my younger siblings a couple years ago. Fast Forward a few years and somehow, the disc isn't scratched to Hell and all of the inserts are still in good condition. So I assumed nobody played it and I've reclaimed it as my own.
I would have loved to play this collection back in the Wii days, I played the hell out of SMG1, 2 and NSMB Wii.
love the robocop references
@Eagle1337 Because the original All-Stars wasn't released with World. It was an add-on after All-Stars was re-released.
My Snes is at my mom's house and it doesn't work on any of my current HDTV's. I got Super Mario World on the Virtual Console. I got Yoshi's Island for my GBA and (for free!) on my 3DS. I got the 8-Bit originals for my Wii VC, too. In my particular case, this collection was a gift from up above! And how much do you guys think three SNES games (yeah, I know they are all part of a single cart but you know how Nintendo is.) would cost you on the VC? I'm happy with it.
It depends on how you look at it. It's half-assed in the sense that it is just a straight re-release of a game. But for people who no longer own/never owned a SNES or an NES this would be awesome. I'm willing to bet this game was made primarily for Nintendo's youngest generation of gamers. The ones who've been growing up with the Wii as one of their first consoles.
This is barely even worth talking about without Super Mario World. They should have gone all out for this and included everything up through the N64. Super Mario RPG, 64, Paper Mario, Yoshi's Island, and Yoshi's Story. The anniversary collection isn't as good as the SNES version that has SMW on it.
That final song is so heartwarming.. I think i'm gonna cry
an enhanced version of the SNES all-stars version on the wii? No there is nothing enhanced about it, it is literally a 2MB rom stamped onto a wii disk. There is no difference between this and emulating the SNES allstars rom in the homebrew channel, actually I lied there is a difference, one will not cost your $50.
No, they should include every single game that Mario has ever appeared in. Every game that even has "Mario" in the title. Yeah, that means Mario Andretti Racing on the Genesis too. This is one collection that wouldn't fuck around.
Dead or Alive, you're coming with me!
Because the Wii discs have that capacity (dual layer have more). They probably didn't use the rest of the disc or they used another type of disc with less capacity.
Another dick move was not including the book and cd in the selects version. At least put the book.
Super Mario bros 12 the legend of weegee Great title :D
The Super Mario All-Stars 25th Anniversary! (it could have been): * Super Mario World * Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island * Super Mario RPG Legend of the Seven Stars * Super Mario 64 * Super Mario Kart * Paper Mario * Super Smash Bros. * Mario Party Bonus Content!: * Includes the 1st full season of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! that debuted in 1989. * Also includes the 1993 live action film Super Mario Bros. directed by Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel.
Super Mario Bros 12 sounds like a game I'd play.
The only thing I don't like about this is that they shoulda put in more extra's. Like add the red coin challenge for the first super mario bros. like they had on Game boy color. Or the E-reader levels for SM3 that was on the Game Boy Advance... Why not add those fun little things to make it special. It would have taken NOTHING to add those things in. Now that woulda made a great anniversary collector.
I was born in the Game Boy days. I didn't start playing modern game consoles (I had a GBA and a NES) until I got a Wii on 2006... darn... I skipped a lot of gaming consoles...
Damn, sometimes i just wish i could have a couple of beers with Mark and play some games.
@the11Hamster You bet! They actually can. A Wii disc can hold 4.7 GB of data. You can add those games you mentioned, the original SMB games on the NES, Super Mario 64, and still have room for Super Mario Sunshine. Even then, there will still be room for more. That's a lot of space as you can see.
@thebandz thats the point. its for the anniversary
lol epic Half Life zombie (or zombine?) sound at 4:44
I love this game, I remember all the secret levels, mario games are the best.

+Laywa Wood Now you must play truxton!
They're still incredible games but i already have them on my SNES.
I play this on my PSP using a SNES emulator. Looks great.
Greatest series of all time!!. Super Mario!
Heck, I still own a physical copy of the Mario All Stars game cartilage, and i still think the Anniversary collection is nice. Just gameplay wise, it feel more natural playing thm with a WII remote on its side than a SNES controller. Plus, as much as i love the 8-bit versions, these are the best versions of these games imo.
@HamtaroSonicHedgehog Exactly. I'm positive all of the games I've listed would fit on a Wii Optical Disc.
The only main problem with the re release is that it didn't include Super Mario World so I'm a little gutted. But hey ho, the game is awesome and worth reappearing on the shining gem that is Nintendo Wii.
it's literally the content of the Super Mario All Stars cartridge for SNES pu unto in a DVD boxed well with a Soundtrack :) but very good for new players on the Wii that never experienced the game in early 90s on the SNES (cause they were not born yet !!)
@WickedArcAddict I know, exactly. They sould’ve done something like Sega did on Sonic’s 20th: Classic SMB gameplay on a 2D stage as well as Modern SMG2-SM3DL gameplay on 3D stages.
@XinBiDe I wouldnt call it a ripoff, however, you are completely right.
cgr why not start a kickstarter for a new truxston game. since it's' your favorate game
@Xenindwarf123 I think it had to do with the fact that Super Mario World is available on the VC, but the games included on this disc aren't. It's like not putting the US version of Rubber Soul out as an official CD due to the fact it uses songs from the UK version of Help!. We already have the songs available.
@RaycxellTorres I totally agree. That would have been the equivalent of what they had done with the NES ports to the SNES collection. It would have made sense. They also could have re-recorded the music to something like they had done for SSBM/SSBB. Not to mention that audio CD.. only 10 music tracks (25mins!). It should have been more like 80 min/40 tracks. I really don't understand why they didn't add the videos (game tips, interviews) posted on the website. They certainly had the space!
OMG.. nostalgia!!! My first game ever, my first system ever. :3
If Super Mario Brothers 12 is made, it will be the best game ever created.
CGR is just the best!!!!!!
at least there are no people complaining about the new youtube layout here...
It's not bad but it coulda been better. One of the SNES versions of SMA actually had Super Mario World but that didn't make it into the Wii version. If it would have had extras, I might have considered getting it.
Wasnt luigi dreaming the events of super Mario bros 12?
I like the sound of the fireballs.
I would like it better if: -You could choose between NES, SNES, GBA, or Wii Graphics/Music -If it had more Games (Like SMW, SM64, SMK1, etc.) -If It had some unlockable stuff (i.e. E-reader levels from SMA4:SMB3)
