"As if Super Mario Bros. isn't good enough, it came on the same game cartridge as DUCK HUNT. That's like a double barreled shotgun blast of rad gaming. And it came with the NES. That's like having your cake, and knocking everyone else around you, and eating theirs too." These are arguably the best words that ever came out of Mark's mouth. CGRHD is awesome.

And two official multi-cart releases: Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt/World Class Track Meet (late 1988, packaged with the NES Power Set with the Zapper and Power Pad accessories) Super Mario Bros./Tetris/Nintendo World Cup (1988, EU version of Sports Set)

The music from this game is truly iconic. During Milwaukee Brewers baseball games when the team gets the third out, sometimes they will play the Super Mario fanfare like they just completed a level.

I still play this game when I can, it just never gets old. It is so amazing just how important this game is and was to the video game industry and the world because without it, many great video games today would not be here or even have been possible.

Zac That’s right! The video game industry was in jeopardy after the public lost all interest in Atari’s video game consoles like the 2600, caused by travesties of video game titles, such as the headache-inducing port of “Pac-Man” and the critically and commercially panned “E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial” video game.

This game blew my mind when I was a kid. I had a sega genesis, and was obsessed with sonic because of the whole "speed" thing. My cousin's on the other hand had a super nintendo and the original nintendo. After watching my cousin beat this game in 10 minutes I was hooked on Mario. I still am. It doesn't matter which one I play I found my self staring up at the clock timing myself for each game. Sonic was fast... he was just missing the warp tunnels, and star road x]

Ah, Super Mario Bros. I have such fond memories of that game. I see it as the game that breathed life back into video games. The NES came out just after the video game crash of the mid 1980s. Many thought that video games were just a fad. But the NES proved them wrong. I am eternally grateful to Nintendo for saving video games from the grave.

Mark, you said you weren't going to go up against more sophisticated reviews or thesis about this game, but honestly, your review is probably the best, well rounded and thoughtful pieces I've seen on Super Mario Bros. Don't sell yourself short here. Your focus on the cultural impact of the game and on you personally was an amazing insight into gaming history. I was surprised that you didn't review the game so far, but given the quality of the review, I guess it was well worth the wait.

I had an NES from the time is came out and didn't get a new system until the Nintendo 64. I was so young when I had the NES I didn't even know that they had made an SNES. I just played that NES practically everyday with my brothers growing up, until that one Christmas morning when my brother and I got the N64 with Mario Kart. That was probably the peak of my family and friend gaming experience. I miss when people would come over to the house to play games, not just sit online.

Thanks for the vid, it does take you back to 1985/6. Like you, I got the 7800 before the NES and clearly remember ,after starting SMB, saying to my Dad (who always liked games back then) that it was like playing a cartoon. (For the younger folks: back in the day we said "cartoon" instead of "Animated Series") Still, it didn't keep me from loving my 7800 and racking up thousands of hours playing it over the years.

My Dad took us to Toys R Us, Kaybee, K-Mart, etc. But everyone was SOLD OUT!! My brother and I finally had to settle for KUNG FU as our first game. You sound just like me. I was also an Atari kid and I also bought another system, rather than the NES, but It was the Sega Master System. Which I loved, but I also experienced that same envy when I saw Super Mario Bros being played at a friends house. Super Mario Bros took what Pitfall had started and brought it to the next level. So I cried and begged my parents to buy me the NES. Eventually they did and I owned two systems for the first time in my life.
