Classic EMD and Great Horns on the Buffalo and Pittsburgh Railroad

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

On a beautiful July 30, 2010 on former B&O trackage, with a lot of heritage left in place, such as CPL's and freight cars and cabooses, we explore some of the Buffalo and Pittsburgh operations in Southern New York / Northern Pennsylvania. We catch two trains, one being a through-freight, SIJB, and another being a local, BR1. These trains are powered by classic EMD power:
SIJB (Salamanca, NY - Johnsonburg, PA)
B&P SD45-2 459 (built 1969 to SP)
B&P SD40T-2 3302 (built 1978 to SP)
B&P SD45-2 455 (built 1969 to SP)
(The SD45-2's are not pure, all have had modifications, 455 is pretty much an SD40-2)
BR1 (Bradford, PA local)
B&P GP9 626 (built 1958 to NW)
The SIJB is a southbound portion of the train which makes the run from Buffalo to Pittsburgh. This train has a great sounding horn and is seen at five locations. The local also has a great Leslie RS-5T horn and we watch this veteran shift the refinary with a former B&O caboose. Got to love the high, Notch-8 full throttle, shoving action!
Sit back and enjoy, the sights and sounds of a short line railroad, which are much more appreciable than any Class I could provide.

@rockguitarist946 B&P lists 459 as a SD45-2. It was rebuilt from an SD45, should be rated 3200 HP. 455 is technically an SD40-2 in an SD45 shell, rated at 3000 HP. If you can find any original SD45 or SD45-2 these days, let me know, because they've all been modified so much.

Superb vid, Eric! That "old Lady" Geep, still hasplenty of spunk left in her! Regarding SD-452's, in 1987 Wisconin Central bought used SD-45,s for mainline power with the3,600 h.p. engine. Their shop cut down the h.p. rating to 3,200 h.p. and the result is that got a lot of :bang for the buck" and prevented any further crank-shaft problems which was a design flaw when they were first introduced.

@rockguitarist946 Oh yeah! And NS's are technically SD40-2's in an SD45-2 shell. CSX also as a few of those I think, in fact, very recently one CSX SD45-2 and an NS SD45-2 were paired together on CSAO job in New Jersey.

There is nothing on the face of this Earth that sounds better than an EMD 16-567C. Nothing. Zip. Zero. Zilch. I don't know how many times I played this video through surround sound but I imagine I had it turned up to the point where it was as loud as the actual locomotives. This has got to be one of my all time favorite videos on youtube. Have you considered making full length movies and selling them?

Because shortlnes tend to do more industry switching and do so with 2 man crews....visibility becomes a greater issue. In addition some railroads have seen a trend where lawsuits involving grade crossing accidents may have attorneys bring up the fact that the accident "could" have been prevented if the railroad has greater visibility. Also, in many cases the Class I railroads chopped the nose before they sold them to the shortline. (For example, all of ATSF's GP7u locomotives)
