Classic checkers: 1955 Tinsley-Hellman, Game 3

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video, I review a game from one of the most famous checkers world championship matches of all time: 1955 Marion Tinsley vs. Walter Hellman. Every single game played in this match is historic, but this video highlights just one: Game 3. This game in particular has some very instructive points that players all of classes can learn from and deploy in their games.
I provide my commentary and analysis beginning at the 3:02 mark. I'll be reviewing additional classic games and matches from time to time on this channel, so please stay tuned.

Just subscribed! I am a player of Russian draughts, but I feel great respect for American checkers. I love reading about the great Marion Tinsley, and now I can learn from his games! Great video, also your voice is very relaxing.

Thank you very much! I enjoy playing Russian draughts -- the backwards jumping and flying kings can be very enjoyable! I recommend the book "Checkers the Tinsley Way" by Dr. Robert Shuffett if you are able to find it. It contains many of Tinsley's games -- it is absolutely fascinating! Thank you again for watching and hope you enjoy my other videos on this channel!

I got this set from a good friend at a tournament in North Carolina several years ago. I believe it can be purchased from the official ACF store here: www.usacheckers.com/store/?cat_id=4 (this particular board is the light-green model. The pieces can also be purchased at the store, and they are sold separately). Hope that helps!

This Games Great But It's Sooooo Hard To Get The Hang Of

Thank you for the feedback, and please know you are not alone in thinking this! Checkers is a game of exceptions, so it's difficult to follow just one strategic perspective. But, with enough practice and patience, you will eventually get the hang of it!

@Tony Maurice That's a fair point, and I appreciate the feedback. I think in showing draws, I try to highlight why specific moves are not good and may end up being losing moves. In this particular match (Tinsley-Hellman, 1955) there were only 3 wins scored. I did show a win by Paul Davis vs. Ed Bruch in the 1988 U.S. Masters in another video. I'll try to highlight more classic games that feature wins.

Not in this variant of checkers! There are other variants in which kings can fly. But in this game, a king can only move one square at a time.
