The success of computers might increase our own development. The camera can capture the human face far more accurately then Rembrandt but that hasn't stopped from loving his art. @EnderTKD You can get a number board at the American Checker Federation site. When you go there click on theACF store. You can also get the checkers there. If they don't have the number boards you can go to a arts and crafts store and get the numbers and put them on. If you want more info about checkers and boards you can go to "The Checker Maven" web site and find out more information. Thank you!

Thank you checkercycle. In my country the variant played is on a 12x12 board with flying kings, but i like the American version more. How is possible that Marion Tinsley only lost 7 games in more than 40 years and 2 of those loses were against a computer!. I like that board.

Capturing a piece is compulsory in checkers? I am a chessplayer but i want to play checkers too but i dont find where and and whom to play.

I got a master rating in checkers, I played for 3 years online, I drew games against many top players, I played thousands of games, sometimes up to 8+ hours a night up until I heard the game was solved by the guy in Edmonton Canada, the same guy that made the program Tinsley played to a draw in the early 90's right before he died... Johnathan Shaefer (I think i spelled that wrong). So anyway, I heard that it was solved and figured it was dead and have since learned chess and moved on to that.

Anyway, the thing is, we can presume that computers will solve checkers, computers HAVE solved checkers. It happened last year I think. Did you not hear about it? it was in the news, even on tv. Solved by Johnathon Shaefer with his Chinook program. Anyway google it and check it out. Every game, if played perfectly, will lead to a draw.

furthermore,computers beat the top chess players with ease,does that stop people from playing each other and enjoying the game?no it doesnt,the same can be said of checkers,we as human beings do not live long enough to solve checkers,all of our games against each other will not be a draw,we play for the love of the game,not to be dismayed by computers,by the way there are over 555 billion possibilities in checkers(and thats from 10 pieces not 12)think u can memorize them all and play perfect?

Only kings can move backwards. All other forward moves are blocked.

hey ironlee,i think u need to read a little more carefully,checkers is "solved"was the term coined,the quotation marks means it is weakly solved,Jonathan Schaefer himself said we do not have the computer power to solve it from the beginning of the game,only with 10 pieces on each side,go back and read it all over son.Furthermore a master rating online is sooooooooo easy to get,but can you get it in tournament play(face to face that is)?checkers is not dead,so u figured wrong,its still played

It was in the news that it was solved by his 12 piece data base, "son". Just saying what I heard. If I'm wrong, great, I guess the game dodged a bullet. I don't think I'm wrong though. Every game if played perfectly, WILL draw. And yeah I played live tournies...so? no more difficult than online. You gotta play at the right sites not against kids on msn. Master rating was by far not easy to get. It took me 3 years of allot of play. Anyway thanks for the reply... I guess.

So since checkers was solved, if I continued to play for lets say another 3 years and was able to become a GM, all I could hope to do against the best player in the world (or Chinook) was draw every game. It would be a game of "who will make the first mistake in the line". With chess there is millions of more possibilities of moves in every position, it has not been solved, and likely never will be. Also in chess, if you lose a piece, unlike in checkers it does not mean an almost certain loss.

Well now no human can hope to beat the best engines in chess. So I assume chess is no longer a useful game either. By that logic nothing is useful unless you are the best in the world at it or can beat a computer. So math is out too. Just relax and play the game for the enjoyment. And you will sharpen your own logic and brain while you are at it.
