Classic Cars in Movies - Volvo Amazon

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Volvo Amazon was manufactured from 1956 to 1970 and introduced in the United States as the 122S in 1959. It was used as a police car in Scandinavia and appears like this in movies like 'Olsen-Banden' of which we've included a car chase scene in this video. It comes as no surprise the Amazon appears mainly in Scandinavian movies of which we made a nice selection. Enjoy!

Does anyone know why Volvos and SAABs from the '50s into the early '70s had such curvy roofs??? It's because a lot of Scandinavia had mostly unpaved roads, and parts still do. If you went off the road, into a ditch and rolled over you were much more likely to be able to roll a vehicle with a curvy roof back over and continue your journey rather than freezing in the snow waiting to be rescued. It was a matter of safety and survival...

No, rolling over had nothing to do with it. The myth about rolling over came from a Sweedish rally driver who got the nickname Karlsson on the roof because of some legendary roll overs in races in his Saab. The reason behind Saab's shape was that the company originally was a manufacturer of airplanes, and therefore was ahead of it's time when it came to aerodynics.

@@Tvjunkieful12 Yes, that is also true, but it wasn't just the beetle-back SAABs, the Volvo PVs also had very curved roofs, and the Volkswagen Beetle was also very popular in Scandinavia during that period as well, another car with a very curved roof. Things like this don't tend to happen just by coincidence. Getting stuck in the wilds, in winter, with your car upside-down in a ditch is no small thing when you're talking about temperatures regularly below -20 celsius and you're on a road that may not see another vehicle for days. That's life and death stuff. I'm well aware of Erik "on the roof" Carlsson and his rallying antics and the characteristics of the SAAB being easy to roll over if inverted was one of the reasons why it was one of his favourite rally cars. Because of the heavily curved rood, if you did roll it then there was a better than fighting chance it would go right over and back onto its' wheels. You lose a lot of time if you get stuck upside-down and need spectator assistance to right the car even nowadays, so if there's a way to reduce the likelihood of that happening then it does rather make sense...

@@gosportjamie I don't mean to be patronizing when saying this, but your description of Scandinavian countries is so far out there, it is hard not to. Yes, there are areas in mainly Norway and Sweden where temperatures in winter can be very cold, even colder than what you describe, and there also is snow and ice in certain parts of those two countries throughout the winter season. But should a car, any car, roll over and off the road in wintertime the likelihood you would be driving away in it afterwards are extremely small. Not only because snow and ice present difficult enough conditions on a plowed and gritted/salted road, but outside the road in those conditions an ordinary car would be helpless, if it even was possible to drive, and the driver concious after such an ordeal as the one you described. Unlike rally cars, ordinary road cars in the 60s and 70s did not have a strengthened roof or roll cage, nor were the drivers strapped in 6 point seatbelts and wearing helmets. Also should a car roll over it is likely at least one of the windows would have broken, maybe even the windscreen falling out, or the steering being damaged, making the car impossible to steer. The main reason Volvo and Saab sold well in Scandinavia - and particularly Sweden - was that they were Swedish. VW sold well mainly because they were cheap. In Norway the VW Beetle and Ford Cortina rivaled to become the best selling car at that time. And Volvos continued to be the most sold car in Sweden long after Amazon, 140-series, 240-series, 740 series, 850-series and more had replaced the Volvo PV. And neither of those had the shape you described. So sorry, but living in Norway, and knowing people in all 3 Scandinavian countries, I know people have chosen their cars for all kinds of different reasons - from a want of speed and power, to being green, or to take full advance of lower tax, or lower tolls - but I never heard of anyone who considered roof-shape being a precaution in case they should roll over. Should a car roll over, I would imagine a low point of gravity to be more of an advantage then the shape of the roof, since that low point of gravity would not only make it more likely the car would both stop rolling around sooner, and land on it's wheels - but also would make it less likely to roll over in the first place, unless the point of gravity was raised by transporting something heavy on a roofrack, or similar.

Er det en autentisk politivogn, eller var den laget specielt til filmen? Vad för bilmodeller blev brugt i verkligheten vid den tidspunkten?
