Hello Pete, Great work being done by you and i do enjoy the episodes. Here is a true Cortina story Which i think will be hard to beat. In 1973 my brother and my cousin bought two new Ford Cortina 2.0 Litre GXL'S From Rayrigg Motors of Windermere who are still in business For £1,350-00 each out of the door. They were both in Copper Bronze and they both had matching registration numbers PJM 590L and PJM 591L. Now get this, not only were they both the same colour and matching registrations, they had consecutive chassis numbers and they both had the same keys. Either set of keys fitted either car. My Brother said he checked on the dvla website and one of the cars still shows up. Keep up the good work. Just beautiful cars and that's why i had two of them in the 70's when everyone else had crapri's and escort's. Cheers. Billy. P.S. I just done a search on the DVLA Website and PJM 591L Still shows and was registered in April 1973. Cheers.

Great to see someone going this 'in depth with a car restoration you're doing a hell of a job Pete I sat here last night and watched all 12 episodes can't wait for the next update absolutely amazing. I had a couple of MK3's in my late teens both 1600's a green one and a purple one with a black vinyl roof she was absolutely MINT had her for about eight months then sold her on ... and been kicking myself ever since. The car had been gone about four or five months then one morning there was a banging at the door REAL early I opened it to be confronted by the flying squad turned out BTU 722N (the purple one) had been used in an armed bank raid in London as a getaway car and had 'got away .. initially, turned out it was still in my name on the log book. I was asked lots of 'in depth questions as to who I'd sold her to could I prove it where I'd been on the day in question etc etc it was a little intense to say the least I half expected to be thrown in the back of a car and shipped off to Wormwood for the duration. She's still on the DVLA register as I've checked from time to time but fact of the matter is being used in an armed robbery she was probably crushed, hoping I'm wrong it would be great to find her one day and buy her back, keep up the excellent work fella you're doing an outstanding job ;)

Funny that, my purple Mk3 HYM 736N was also stolen and used for a bank robbery in Edmonton. It was gone three weeks before I got a call from the old bill. They found it parked in a car park in Waltham Cross with the doors unlocked and were watching it as they thought it would be used again. After another week they called me that I could pick it up. When I got it backed I found it had been tuned, all of the engine changes I had made had been optimized. I just checked DVLC and it is not taxed so I dont know if it still exists.

@@almsco Mine hadn't been stolen I'd sold it to somebody I knew at the time who bought and sold cars from time to time it wasn't long before he sold her again and low and behold she reappeared on our street across from where I was living at the time. The car had been bought by a neighbors son it came and went for a few weeks then disappeared for good I never saw her again then a few months later I got the visit from the law and the grilling commenced. She's still on the DVLA register but hasn't been taxed since May 1984 so I think its sadly safe to say she's long gone. One of the biggest mistakes I ever made selling that car but she's not the only motor I've had and sold and kicked myself over but it'd be nice to find that she has actually survived somewhere and is sat warm and dry in someone's garage awaiting a new lease of life.

Nice job Pete. One way of cutting for new panels where you are replacing only part of a panel is to overlay the new panel, secure in a few places then cut the new and old remains at the same time with 1mm slitting disc. If you cut near the edge of the new panel, you shouldn't lose anything and then when the old part is removed, you have perfect alignment with the required gap for welding.

@@PeteCswampy Guessed you probably knew but thought I'd mention it. I've found using an industrial power hacksaw blade (powered hacksaw blade) broken/cut off to any length required and the end sharpened with a grinder useful for splitting panels. They are high speed steel and thin enough not to do too much damage. They come in a range of widths and are cheap. I believe you were right to do a butt weld on the floor, I'm not a fan of lapped (stepped) joints where you are doing a continuous weld seam. One edge/the flange is free to flex unless you weld both sides at each join and that just increases the amount of welding and raises the risk of distortion. Great job so far and interesting videos.

Hi Pete some great progress ,it's amazing to see it come together so quickly on video I bet theres a few days work there . I see you're still doubting your self - I wouldn’t worry too much about the quality of welding the penetration is right ,Better to have a strong weld than a pretty one . I mentioned before about knocking back the wire speed ,it's just so you can get a flatter plug weld and less work grinding back . I don't fancy trying to but weld a floor pan myself ,I would have been stressing like hell lol . Nice job ! Going to order a T shirt and Mug from you now.

This is great stuff, I mean, good core repair work concerning floor pans, I mean, floor pans are the core problem for so many vintage cars, and I have minimal experience mig welding floor panels, and the work I did in the past was more toward functionality, but I did believe in a continuous seam weld of course, no spot welding repairs for me. I did a volkswagen battery location replacement once, but I got lazy and lapped the metal, of course, and I've made my own sheetmetal replacement floorpan patch panels, but I still consider that I pretty much have zero experience doing a floor pan, and I walked away from some decent good deals on cars and trucks in the past due to my fear of repairing a floorpan,...and your repair illustrates the complexity, cause if there is front and rear rust outs,...that is a big big big job, something always beyond my skills, at the time. I'd like to be doing some welding regularly, both mig, and getting to use my inverter tig welding machine made by everlast that I had bought and barely used in the last five years. Oh yeah, I've owned an inverter tig welder by everlast, a 220 volt(and also able to use 110 volt american household voltage) for five years, now its passed its warranty, and I could in theory weld aluminum if I had wanted to. Got me a inverter plasma arc cutter, at least I have used it several times.

I butt welded a Mini Cooper floor I welded in. I had to run over it again just to make sure there were no holes, but just an inch or so at a time to cut down on distortion. Welding wise, I've just been on a welding course, and using a TIG welder seems to be the way forward in place of a mig. Supposedly less grinding off of welds to do, and much less distortion. Haven't got one yet but hope to speak to the guys at the resto show at the NEC and expect to buy one there with their advice. Decided against the EBay route just in case it was the wrong kit. Hope to see you up there maybe?

Hi Pete, Great Job so far. If you are gonna sing about Cortina's at the Start. Can i request Grey Cortina by Tom Robinson Band. Awaiting for episode 13 in anticipation. Perhaps a Duet with the drunken car restorer. Keep up the good work. Great viewing

@ 29:10 on I have exactly the same problem with the Mini. A lot shorter floor pan but I have to match each new side floor half with the new centre tunnel (and a heelboard and a seat X member). Complete floor panel assemblies are available from Heritage but the pressings are for '91 on cars and are wrong for my '78 car. My solution is: Have a 1" overlap the full length between tunnel and floor panels Add a flange to the floor panels (ie it fits 'over' the tunnel panel) Underneath the X member make a butt weld join All along the rest either spot or plug weld the floor flange to the tunnel Inside the car you end up with a non factory ridge covered with seam sealer Underneath the car you just have seam sealer which you would have with a butt join anyway if I can do it Pete you certainly can. And you have chassis legs to hold floor panels in place and the tunnel is fixed in place anyway. I have 5 separate panels to pull into place. But I love it ... keeps the head working as well as the hands ... 'innit' But Bramble is certainly marching on ... well done you

Hi Pete, very nice job of the new floor pan, now one side of your car looks as good as mine, thanks to Ex-Pressed Steel Panels Ltd, they are very good quality, I loved the shape and fit when they went on mine, so good when they go in as such a big part of the car is solid in one go, the dome welds are clearly fully through, on the tunnel, so will be strong enough, even Ford used the plug welds in some areas on the shells and yours look as good as their original ones.well done and loved the video as always.

Cracking job with that floor, Pete, well pleased for you that it went so well. Loved the way you used spray paint to mark your cut line, so much better than just a sharpie or scribe mark. And i love those little butt weld clamps, have not seen them before, so much better than trying to use magnets. What size wire do you use for your mig? 6 or 8mm? Whatever your using its certainly working for you. I normally use 8mm, have tried 6mm but cannot get on with it. Mind you i am only learning myself, not up to your standards yet, but getting there. Picked up a lot of good tips from you over the years though. Just great to see you working your way along the car, coming together really well.

She's looking good! Definitely has moved from the "chuck it in the crusher" to the "boy that's a lot of work" category. Keep it up! Although, maybe a bit less with the jumpy camera..

Nothing wrong with your welding, good penetration (hence the bump underneath), if there wasnt any penetration you wouldnt get the bump and it would be easy to pull apart.

i didn't bother drilling out the bungholes on the mini, it seemed daft drilling out a hole just to put a bung in, but when mini floors rot it starts at the hole, and you are going for factory finish so i understand why you are drilling them out, as for your welding it looks ok to me, its penetrated its fine.

thanks ALY, yes i did think about the bungholes, but i just thought it would suit me better, on fords they seem to last around that area , even on rusty ones, seem rare to rust

Awesome vid mate, ty. She's really coming along and your welding is on the improve leaps and bounds! Just having a look around the various car sale websites here in Oz and there seem to be a number of factory built 4.0L Mk3 and MK4 Cortina's. Do you know if any were any made in the UK? Maybe your next project after Bramble. You could call him 'Skip'! :D Cheers mate
