Classic British cars of the 1950s - 1960s Part 5 | Original photos of Austins, Hillman, Ford ++ cars

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Part 5 of Original Photos of British Cars 1950s - 1960s sees a further collection of original B&W (plus a few colour) images of British-built cars, as seen in the 1950s/1960s era.
While modern-day photos of surviving cars in preservation are interesting of course, nothing beats seeing these vehicles when they were still a common sight on British roads. Plus you get to see the fashions of the day, the street furniture of yesterday (eg signs, street lamps etc), and get a truer sense of what it was like to own and drive these cars when they were current, a time when in-car heaters were often an optional extra-cost option, and passenger sunvisors were standard equipment on Deluxe models only.
Thanks to the passage of time, all these cars are now categorised as Classic Cars, and would be welcomed with open arms at old-car shows the length and breadth of the country.
Perhaps you own one of these cars now, or did in the past? Either way it'd be neat to read your comments. Hopefully the contents of this classic car video will be of interest - Likes, Comments & Subs welcomed as always.
This vid contains photo(s) of many British cars of yesteryear, including the Austin Mini, Hillman Minx, Bond Minicar, Ford E83W van, Humber Hawk, Ford Anglia 105E, Standard Vanguard, Jaguar E-Type, Ford Cortina, Jaguar Mk10, Ford 100E Prefect, and many others.
Thanks to viewers of previous entries in this 1950s - 1960s car series (this is part 5) who kindly supplied several of the photos that have been included in this upload. I've also received a number of photos that will be used in future collections. If you have similar old car photos taken in the 1970s or earlier, and would be willing to see them feature in a future upload, please drop me a line at dodgenut@4onthefloor.co.uk, thanks.

I knew the lady at 1:49 standing beside my Fordson van. We romped many times in the back of it until her husband caught us and he freaked out. I got myself out pronto never to see her again, the van was sold soon after. I do miss her, and the lady.

Thanks, such nice pics and comment from the era of my early youth. The Pietermatitzburg pics were from the Roy Hesketh circuit. My Dad and I used to drive there from our town Vryheid in Northern Kwazulu Natal in the early to mid sixties to attend races. I was about 6 to 8 years old. He had a Westminister A 110 but I remember also going there in his 1959 Galaxie 2 door the first time. I still have 8 mm movie footage of this car. The trip to Roy Hesketh was a drive of 197 miles (Googled today!) from our home justfor the day. Ee fot home well after dark My mom had the 100E Anglia as per earlier comments I have posted. Also have memories of attending races at the Grand Prix circuit in SA which was in East London in the early sixties. My very early motoring nemories. Thanks for kindling those memories in a 65 year old motoring enthusiast! I will see what local pics I have from our monthly Piston Ring classic and vintage get together where there are well over 150 cars present at every meet The English or unusual car pics may interest you.

Glad it was of interest, I've a small stack of photos from the Roy Hesketh circuit - cars and bikes - some of the cars were taking part in a parade of 1920s/1930s cars rather than racing

These were exactly the sort of cars you would see on the road in New Zealand during that same period; some were kept for a bit longer, owing to import restrictions. Other cars you would see on the road during the 50s and 60s were Australian Holdens and Ford Falcons; occasionally you might see a Yank tank, usually owned by a well-heeled farmer. Interesting to note that new cars of this period never looked quite as new as modern-day cars, due to the higher level of finish now available.

Just in time for breakfast with OCC and an interesting and nostalgic set of photos. Frankies Fish and Chips is indeed in South Shields, that is my hometown and the town I was born in and spent my youth in. Frankies is still here on Ocean Road I believe where that photo was taken.

I love these old photos from years gone by. Although not born there I did spend some decades in Southampton. I may be wrong here but I seem to remember seeing an item on the local TV about the boat with the Minis on. Going a bit off subject I was acquainted with the inventor of the Griffon hovercraft. As far as I am aware the company is still there on the river. Also the home of Sir Christopher Cockerell (a plaque can be seen in the village of Hythe opposite the docks). Anyway back to the cars it is interesting to note the low volume of traffic on the roads compared to now. We can see however from the Motorway construction photos the beginning of the boom in car ownership. Though for many a car was still out of their pay grade. Thanks again for this excellent collection of old photos. 👍👍

The trade plated MG Magnette is one of the earlier ZA models distinguished by the chrome trim following the curve of the front wheel arch, the later ZB had a short chrome strip above the wheel arch. The ZB 'Varitone' models had unadorned front wings but more bright trim elsewhere plus a wider rear window with a slight wraparound.

BRILLIANT yet again ! I love these old pictures - brings back so many memories when cars were very distinctive - even by their engine sound. Today sadly, everything looks and sounds the same - characterless. All those 'marques' gone too. Thanks again for all your hard work in compiling these videos :-)

another great lineup of British cars. I particularly enjoy looking at the fashions of the time too. I don't know if you've ever done one, but how about some pictures of British 2 door saloon cars. I'm sometimes quite surprised when I see a car that I didn't know they'd made in 2 door form.

Hi there. There's a 1953 Anglia in the upcoming Matthewsons Classic Car Auction .I tried and failed to send you a link (KZread wouldn't let me) . If you wouldn't mind having a look at it and give an opinion on A) is it worth bothering with is it too far gone and B) what would you pay for it? Thanks for another great video. Cheers

Hi, just had a look at a black one on their site, I'm always a bit dubious about looking at photos of any car that may have just had a bucket of water thrown over it. The body looks average, ok around the gutters but bubbling up along lower edges - fine if you're ok at tackling bodywork. The grille has a bit of a dent and the headlamps are incorrect. The ledge where the battery sits has a plate over it so perhaps it's rotted out? The door pillars look a bit dog-eared. It all depends on whether you want a project or not. A good one would be £4-5kish, a project £2000ish, so this one should be around there, including buyer's commission. There's no substitute for looking at something in the metal though - and hearing it run. There's very little info on the site, allegedly it ran last week but with all the plugs leads off under the bonnet....? PS the firing order is 1243

I agree with you regarding the coach in the background of one of those excellent photos, it looks like a Bedford VAL with a Duple Vega Major body. The smaller wheels are a good clue. The other coach photo, with a chap standing by it, is more of a mystery to me. I don't recognise the body builder but the trims on the front wheel seems to suggest it's a Bedford SB.

It's a dam shame the British manufacturers of cars and trucks had no regard for their customers and the problems they presented the buyers of their product , it seems they had no understanding of corrosion prevention , Auto electrics turning to Lucas as a supplier who they say single handed destroyed all of Britain's Auto and Bike Industry , another thing the British engineering all round was so amateur compared to US and other Europeans they just fell apart .

I agree that build quality often left plenty to be desired, although I've found US stuff to be distinctly average in the quality stakes too so really anything post-1960s is built to a cost rather than a standard, IMO. Thanks for watching.

Who told you that? What you just put is utter crap and sound like the same repeat rubbish other americans say who dont have a clue or are ignorant🙄, what is wrong with lucas? Many of my lucas magnetos are still working from the 1930s with original coils! but american magnetos are crumbling to bits, Typical low iq yank slagging anything british off because they knew their cars were worse - people back then knew how bad quality US cars were hence why not many people bought them in UK/europe, i have seen several articles mentioning this.
