Classic BBC Radio Theme ~ Radio 4 UK Theme

Музыка

The BBC Radio 4 UK Theme is an arrangement of traditional British airs composed by Fritz Spiegl (and possibly Manfred Arlan) which was played every morning onBBC Radio 4 between 1978 and 2006. In 2006, an announcement that the broadcast was to be cancelled caused much controversy in the United Kingdom, including extensive discussion in the British media and even in Parliament. The last broadcast of the UK Theme was at 5:30am on 23 April 2006.
This version is a re-recording by The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra

As a police officer on early turn this used to play before 6 am . My shift started at 6. I would sit in the car listening to the end then run in. They never understood why I arrived alwaysxat the same time . I never told them. As a proud Cornishman I miss this piece so much.

I am a 53 year old Captain. I command a pipe lay construction vessel now and look after 600 persons. I can remember being a 17 year old deck hand on old coasters listening to this with pencil poised ready to get the shipping forecast on the morning watch. Beautiful piece of music and typifies everything British. Made you proud to be under the Red Ensign, proud to say I am still under the Ensign all be it the Gibraltar one. It's a shame when your not allowed to be proud of your heritage anymore for fear of offending somebody.

A shame indeed sir. I play this to my kids so they understand what their culture is. They love it not because I play it to them, but because it is a masterpiece of music that any human can appreciate. One day though they'll know. This music represents the best of British. I just hope they can continue it's tradition and we are not lost.

If I recall correctly, the 'official' reason for not playing it was something to do with the costs of royalties, which I believe is also why they stopped playing 'Sailing By'. But I'm pretty sure the real reason was it was considered non-PC, too traditional and not suitable for the 'modern, inclusive, vibrant' Britain of the post-Blair years.

I have to admit, the only times I heard this song before it was canceled is when we went on holiday to France as a child... but there was a pleasure waking up in the car a few minutes before this theme. It was wonderful, a glory, a revelment in my nation; the patriotic music, the folk music, all combined together with the biting cold as I opened my window. It was glorious. And I have to ask, why not bring it back? A bit of national unity would be good right now. As a man who looks to Wales, England and Scotland for his ancestry, can I not ask that? Or has that been determined wrong?

Thanks so much for putting this up. Memories. I used to be a crew member and navigator on a yacht. Early morning, to the sound of shrouds clattering in the wind, I'd enjoy this delightful medley with pencil at the ready for the forecast. Thanks again. The BBC isn't what it used to be - alas.

I once considered using this in a quiz to see who would recognise all the tunes. I abandoned the idea because so few people ever listen to anything other than pop music that few could name the various themes even if they had the patience to listen, which is doubtful.

This should be brought back IMMEDIATELY! It is such a "call to arms" for everyone in the UK. We always used to play it on our cruising sailing ketch touring the west coast of Europe. Full volume - esp the last bit "Rule Brittania"

I have an evening playlist which includes 'Across the border ' by Linda Ronstadt and a morning playlist which consists solely of this wonderful medley, especially the counterpoint, which I play drinking my morning 'cuppa' in the conservatory. I hasten add that it's Normally later then when I used to listen to it on R4 just before 6 a.m. but I'm retired now. Beautifully stirring and patriotic music.

Funny that I occasionally randomly listened to Radio 4 all these years since before 1978 and have never once heard of this. _Sailing By_ , the themes from _The Archers_ , _Desert Island Discs_ , _Test Match Special_ , _Just a Minute_ , yup I know all of those. But never heard this once. Funny that.

If you've enjoyed this lovely piece, check out ' BBC Television Start Up from 1956 '.Called ' National Airs ' , I'm sure some inspiration was taken from it for the Radio 4 UK Theme .I recall it as a child starting at 4.55 p.m before the start of ' Children's Television ' at 5.00.It is a beautiful piece of music and deserves to be re-recorded and featured more .I remember reading in 2006 that the 'UK Theme ' was dropped from R4 to make the news feel ' more pacey ' . Typical BS from the BBC which was a taste of things to come !.

What a wonderful sound this was to start each day. Destroyed by someone who clearly had no understanding of the typical R4 listener and probably advised by focus groups. Ah, well.

I nicknamed this "EMS" a term from very early computing standing for Early Morning Start, mainly because it was amongst the first bit of music on my clock radio alarm in the morning. Reminded you of who you were and where you were, nothing wrong with that as a start to the day.

It's all very well to criticise the BBC for getting rid of this, but let's not forget that it was the BBC who put it on in the first place. The BBC, although it missteps sometimes, is proudly patriotic and is one of our great institutions.

Just commenting now about a Tory wanting to have the BBC play the National Anthem every day now. I think they still do on radio 4, but got me to thinking about this lovely piece of music. I was a bad sleeper when I was young, then I was a Mother feeding babies through the night, and then I was abroad - it was a lovely thing. I've only ever written to the BBC once to complain in my life, and it was about abandoning this. Thanks for the info about Fred Arlon (Unsung hero, I think.....)

Its a piece called 'Sailing By' that precedes the late night shipping forecast. This was played regularly at the start of Radio Four in the early morning. Sadly no more but 'Sailing By' continues every night - they wouldn't dare stop it !
