Thanks so much for these Jake. If ever we need something to reminisce it's now. Wonderful stuff. Got my first Ian Allen in 85, just missed the 40's but they were things of legend. Thanks again

Matthew Miller Same, my first ABC Locoshed book was Summer 1985. My only 40 cop was 40 086, other than 97 407 and 97 408 (ex 40 012 and 40 118).

@@megamanmuppet remember going to Crewe open day in 86. Red hot day. A large line of 40's was the main highlight for me, headed by 044.

Matthew Miller Yes, nice. I saw both Class 97s on the 8th June 1985 at Crewe travelling back to Manchester from London for my ninth birthday on the Independent lines during Crewe Remodelling. We were hauled by Class 87 012 Coeur de Lion I recall.

Wonderful nostalgia, never to be repeated. So much variety, and comfortable seats! .Compare the difference between a Voyager and a Mark 1! I travelled on a 221 from Bristol Parkway to Birmingham N.S. recently, in 50 years of train travel, I've never been so uncomfortable for so long. The seat was like an ironing board. It may be my imagination, but the Mark 1 passenger coach at 2.30 looks like it's riding on Mark 3 bogies., or at the very least they're surely non-standard.

I see what you mean, never noticed that. Could it be commonwealth? images.app.goo.gl/WsvbQBGgX1XKp96U7, or a B4 www.flickr.com/photos/stuart166axe/9678272930?

Good point. I've tried to get the image magnified up, and initially, I thought as you suggested, B4's. Comparing B4s and Commonwealths, The upper beam of each bogie appears to be wider than found in those two designs. Whatever the answer Jake, your videos capture the atmosphere of train spotting back in the days when you never quite knew what was coming around the corner next, perfectly. Thank you for the memories. @@aureol40012

These iconic diesel locos always seemed so sturdy but I'm guessing that wear and tear on track and fuel consumption was high by comparison with the modern day "boxes on wheels". How can you tell I'm a nostagic enthusiast rather than a train operator?
