And me. I just retired from driving trains but I wish I was driving them in the 70's and 80's. It's all rubbish now.
Eight years after this first appeared I still come back and watch occasionally because it's out-flippin-rageous.
A little taste of lovely old England!
Unofficially named Burton Albion on the nose, saw this at Buxton, can't believe it's over 30 years ago.
What a great video brought back a ton of memories. Thank you so much. 44 was always one my favourites along with 28 - not the prettiest 40 following its accident at Chinley in the 70's and having the 2 different front ends - but she was a stormer and never let you down - R.I.P.
brings back great memories of the heydays of real locomotives

1984 ? Holy crap I would sell my soul to be back in 1984.
Bloody love Tats !!! Hearing that fan roar and those 16 cylinders pound, Awesome !!!!! Glad I worked of these beasts back in the 80's 👌

Dost know Rob Wigley ¿?
you can see the third or fourth traction motor over heat and give some smoke once in a while in first and secbd field divert! Quite a climb up tae Buxton !

Although plausible Fred I doubt it. It looks more like the driver was putting down sand. Traction motors don't smoke... They get hot and go bang if anything! Cheers

I can see wisps of steam coming off the front bogie occasionally. Obviously the steam is leaking from the front pipes.
Great video gosh that take me back. The turbos, the whine of the generators, the heat, the smell of diesel......an awesome combination, sadly missing nowadays. Wished id saved the videos i made on the North Wales Coast in the early 80s. I can remember coming home and being black from 'Thrash'. So I did something id always wanted to do a few years back with the help of the CFPS and spent a day driving 40135 on East Lancs with Chris Guntrip. What an awesome day. If you get chance id recommend it to any fans of English Electric loco's!!
Absolutely fantastic
Simply wonderful.
Excellent footage 👍🏻

Many thanks!
Great thrash from the old beast, had her many times. Must be a Haymarket man or a longsight man up front. The Scots loved their proper loco's.

I remember sitting in the driver's seat at Crewe open day. Must have been 86. Remember it was a really hot day. 8 years old then. I'm sure it's the one that someone wrote ' Burton Albion ' on the nose.

Let's not forget that the last remaining 40s (apart from D200) were withdrawn in February 1985, although 012/060/118/135 were reinstated for the Crewe remodeling project

Worked it's last train on Sun 20 Jan 1985. It was dragging a Euston service out of Manchester Piccadilly when the overhead power was off. It was a regular turn on Sundays. I'm not sure if it worked to Crewe or Birmingham before being taken off. It was withdrawn overnight 20/21 Jan 85.
I was on that tour, great to see!

Very true. This train was held back.
What a dark gloomy place Derbyshire is and I remember growing up there with the dismal climate
brilliant and fantastic
My lords
The Fart Cart outside Stockport station was obviously held back to follow this charter train but yep loads of railfans on board. Looking at the Derbyshire countryside reminds me how dank an miserable it is up there in winter
Were right hot too thoses mk1 compos with steam.
Did it have different 1 and 2 end noses?
Great engines.
BEST video on youtube
We called DMUs Fart Carts then! With Class 40s hauling some passenger trains I'm speechless!
Beast!
Happy days great memories 😊
Makes me wonder why they didn't just store the whole class when it came to the 40 because there's still a massive need for them now
Brilliant
Best 40 thrash videoever (a massive thanks)? Cleared 44 for a thou, not my machine, but nevertheless, a nice loco

I remember the name Burton Albion at Crewe Works. Was it involved in a collision some where in around Buxton area? I have been there since 1976!

Sure was Michael when we had a proper railway with real locos and had loads of fun chasing and travelling behind the very few that was left at the stage.

I heard the entire class of 142,s was built with the steel from one 40 bogie?

And I thought the 142s were made from the plastic of one drink bottle 😀
Can someone explain why one minute it seems to be on full power and the next minute it seems to be almost idling.
@matthew0605

That's because they were overweight and underpowered , thrash em full bore and they would do 80. Put a load with them and they failed to keep good schedules . Controversial !! .Maybe but true none the less.

because it is wheelsliping on wet rail, the control system cuts the engine power wnen it detects wheelslip.

At about 1,000 feet (300 m) above sea level, Buxton is the highest market town in England. Due to this relatively high elevation, Buxton tends to be cooler and much wetter than surrounding towns, with daytime temperature typically around 2 °C lower than Manchester.
