While its true that I do not think Americans are as traveled as our European brothers, All one has to do is go to the nearest shopping and you will hear 10 different languages being spoken. We truly are a land of immigrants. I think some of our reasons for not traveling as much as we would like is because if we are lucky, will receive only 10-14 days vacation a year. I understand in some European countries, citizens get 6 weeks vacay time off a year. That would be incredible! That is not even enough time to explore our 50 states with its 6 different time zones. Sad but true. Ive lived in Alaska 16 years. I still haven't seen all this State with it's area roughly 1/3 the size of lower 48 has to offer.

In july 2016 I was in the USA at a restaurant with a friend and his girlfriend who had just turned 21 a few months ago on 10th of February. The waitress checked her ID when she ordered a beer, read 10.02. and insisted that this must be 2nd of October and that she obviously is still 20, to young to drink and that we should leave immediately or she would call the cops because we tried to cheat her. I took a look on the ID, pointed on the date the ID was issued and asked the nice Lady what she thought which month 26.08. might be. That did not help much. No dinner for us cheaters.

We call it gas, because it only causes ignition when it is vaporized. So if you try to put a lit match into gasoline, apparently it doesn't catch fire. You need to 'atomize' gasoline or diesel and combine it with oxygen to get combustion. Thus the misnomer of 'gas'

I was on one of those open top buses in London getting the tour. The back of the seats have different flags on buttons, where you can get the audio in your own language. Two female American tourists in front of me were confused, one turned around and asked me which language was American. I pointed out they needed to press this button 🇬🇧, yet they wanted to know where the American flag was. (I promise, this is a true story)

I've got along with the vast majority of Americans that I (an Aussie) have encountered through work, travel, socially etc but mainly because I know how easily offended quite a lot (not all of course) can be. Jeremy nailed it how in the states you cannot be a bit cheeky or joke with the TSA Stormtrooper unlike in Commonwealth Countries where it is practically expected to keep things light and cheerful. One thing judging by the comments shows some Americans have zero capacity to laugh at themselves, they just default to offended.

It goes like this. Back in the day we needed a way to transport oil and natural gas across the USA in a cost- effective way, thus the pipeline. These lines were used, to transport both, and by closing some valves and opening other valves you could at times send oil and at other times natural gas. so, they became known as gas/oil lines. So, with the invention of the car a fuel was developed as well. When it came time to name this fuel someone said it comes from the GAS/Oil Lines , so we will call it Gasoline. and that is it, and over the years people started to call it Gas for short.
