    This is not a performancee. It is a revelation of joy, of loving tenderness and of longing. The lovely runs in the right hand are so bright, pure and brilliant. This is a glimpse of the heaven within. The tempo is no more relevant to this enchanting sound than the play of a mountain stream.

    I understood that before WWII she was tutored by a master who was tutored by masters in direct line from Mozart. Her interpretation is authentic, and suitable for a monarch, with such a delicate, expressive touch. Some the phrasing reminds me of laughter, what you might overhear in a palace garden.

    Lineage in piano performance never reaches back to an unaltered past. There was no such thing as a preservation of tradition in the 19th century. One single performer could play very diffently from time to time. The artistic ideal was originality, not orthodoxy.

    Originality is a Romantic idea, it starts from 19th century, and emphasizes the idea of genius. Mozart belongs to the School of Haydn, who obeys God mostly humbly, this point you can get it from Mozart's letters.

    You do sound like a monarchist at heart. Your interest in musical lines of succession seems to parallel that. Incidentally, who are the 'missing links' between Mozart and Haskil? 1st Samuel chapter 8 contains an interesting narrative in which the people of Israel ask for a king, so that they may become 'like the other nations' around them. The Lord takes this as a rejection of His guidance and authority, but grants them their wish regardless. Centuries of strife ensue. Eventually the monarchy collapses and the people are sent into exile in Babylon, victims of an oppressive foreign monarch. The irony. This diversion need not be taken as completely irrelevant, since Clara Haskil was Jewish.

    Interesting flexing of the tempo. Totally consistent with the contours of the melodic and rhythmic gestures as well as the shapes of phrases. Normally my taste lies with more metronomic interpretations but this is first class. And her ornaments are incredible.

    True. It may be partly her constant use of the pedal which creates this smoothed-over impression, something which wasn't possible to the same degree on 18th-c. instruments with their far less resonant, angular sonority. It's basically a late romantic approach, but very personal and, needless to say, perfectly realized.

    When Clara Haskil plays Mozart it's a song for a child we are , Lily Kraus also in 1960' not comparison with others . they are irreplaceable

    Impeccable in every way...my model for this delectable sonata! I remember buying this on LP more than 40 years ago--the other work on the LP was Schubert's posthumous B-flat sonata. I practically wore it out, and the Schubert became my model for that piece too. I once read somewhere "the remarkable thing about Haskil's technique was that you never noticed it"...she was totally dedicated to her art, totally absorbed in the music she played, and her playing was never less than sublime.

    There are no words to talk about Schubert Sonata D-960 , her last recording in 1960 perhaps : the Top of music above the keyboard her piano is someone talking to us not an instrument .

    @@alainspiteri502 One has to have a systematic technique to play Mozart cleanly and to make it his music. I can play Chopin,Scriabin and Ravel but I can't play a single measure of the simplest Mozart opus.Few Russians really get him.Pletnev can't help himself.Just has to be different.IngridHabler!!!,Pirez,Uchida,Barenboim,Curzon,Brendel,Lily ,even Pogorelich played an ideal Mozart in the past .Many play him and they have ideal techniques. Haskil could do anything play Busoni's violin sonata or Debussy's etudes and her Scarlatti is the peer of Bartok's . She had a marvelous technique and learned a lot early and had ome obviously intuitive sense! This recording has too much pedal for me to love .I prefer a crisper classical era pianoforte sound. Habler couldteach all of us !

    @@MrInterestingthings there Great Pianists XXIEM Century but Alfred Cortot and Clara Haskil are above the keyboard , not Rubinstein and j like Arthur Rubinstein , Haskil is special . a personnal pianist she has a piano who speaks to you , only for you not for the others .

    She was not just an accompianist ,she was equally accomplished as a soloist, unlike Jean Paul Neveu was only an accompianist : Both had"accidental" deaths.

    It often makes me wonder what Mozart would have done, if he had access to a concert piano from today. He never heard such fine dynamics as the ones in this recording, because his pianos were forte pianos with a smaller compass than 88 notes. A harpsichord would have been one of his best alternative instruments.

    Why wonder? Mozart's existence lies elsewhere; if his faith was genuine, then in a far more blessed place. At the same time you are absolutely right, there are real problems articulation, balance, and dynamics to be solved when works conceived for the Viennese fortepiano are played on powerful beasts which we call 'pianos' today. I guess that a 12-foot Boesendorfer grand with nine semitones added in the extreme bass ought to be called a 'pianissimo', huh?

    Congrats for making a sensible statement. Correct, we cannot know what Mozart's opinion 'would have been'. It doesn't matter either, since he is no longer with us. Modern instruments do not sound much like 18th c. fortepianos. Speculation in counterfactuals is pretty useless, since history moves in one direction only.

    when I compare with Horowitz this sonata I find many similitudes; he too studied in Paris a certain time. and also with Cortot. Although the official biography on wikipedia says Clara Haskil was not well treated by Cortot she did learn a lot from him concerning the touch of piano and pianotechnique. She made the first prize with Cortot as her professor. So I think this image chould be corrected a little bit. When Cortot said she plays like a femme de menage it was not to discredit her musicality but to say she was not in good mood and should make more effort concerning interpretation. He must have admired her play otherwise he would not have accepted her as pupil and he would not have said this if he meant it really as this would have been horrible attitude which was not the case.Another fact is that Cortot did show the threedimensional play ; the sculptural play where others only play twodimensional. I think this he did miss when saying this ugly phrase. Clara Haskil did a lot with natural intuitivity as she was a genious from childhood on. So it needed to get her conscious of what she does or does not. And a harsh word can make the declic to force somebody to start thinking....

    Everybody knowns that Clara Haskil was not the better Cortot'student j think not musician but Cortot dont'like Clara Haskil as Dinu Lipatti or Samson Francois in fact it'was more about a person than pianist Clara Haskil ; it's funny to understand she was a pianist more similar Cortot than Samson Francois ! As Cortot she was intimate music , discreet , not a demonstrative technique and respected as Cortot the tempi , Cortot-clara Haskil was as Frederic Chopin pianists more in front of a little audience to speak with you . With Samson Francois perhaps the best Chopin with Cortot but not always respected the tempi, Samson Francois played with his heart , it's also amazing . Clara Haskil played Mozart and Shumann and not all composers who played only masterpieces to impress his audience as Horovitz : Chopin wrote " la simplicité est l'essence même de l'art " it's here Cortot-clara Haskil . Horowitz is a pianist on stage , Cortot-Haskil are musician it's not the same thing ! Samson Francois and Cortot are Frédéric Chopin but différent, Clara Haskil is Mozart , Horowitz is a pianist on stage very démonstrative technical except a little masterpieces in his carrer as " chreisleriana "-Schumann and others but not the thrue musician as Cortot Haskil S Francois

    モ ー ツ ァ ル ト「 ピアノ・ソナタ」K.330 クララ・ハスキル 大 賛 辞 軽々しく言えるものではないのかも、知れないのですが、この世の中に、奇跡という事が、あるとしたら、このピアニストのクララ・ハスキルとディヌ・リパッティの名を、挙げたいと思うのであります。ハスキルは、リパッティより少し年上でしたが、ふたり共実に中がよくて、素晴らしい間柄でありました。お互いに敬愛しあったのです。心温まるエピソードですが、リパッティが、自分の演奏会の時に、近くの前の席に、ハスキルの姿を見つけたのですが、リパッティは自分の演奏を聴かれる事が、余りに恥ずかしく思い悩んでいたようです。その事を、如何にも恥ずかしげに、語ったというリパッティの事を思いますと、人の精神の繊細な事と深いものを思慮するのであります。音楽を真に聴くという事は、このような事を謂うのかと、深慮したのです。音楽が人の精神に如何に影響するものなのかを思い遣ったのです。 擱 筆

    ハスキルとリパッテイは同時代に同じ国に生まれた。又二人とも早くに亡くなったってしまったのが、奇跡であり、何か因縁のようなものを感じます。 でも二人とも私たちの心の宝物として、時を超えて大切に聴かせてもらえ、幸せを感じます。 形あるものは殆ど買えるけれど、心の中の宝物はプライスレスです。 運良くこの2人に出会えたので、このサクバツとした現代も、心を癒され、生きる力を頂いています。 有難うございます💕

    Twice there were commercial interruptions: first almost at the end of 1st movement and second at the beginning of 3rd movement. Very sad! Ask KZread to remove these. Her tonal beauty was attacked by these attacks.. So sad!

    Robert Rodes Horowitz’s recording in Moscow is also magnificent. Difficult to compare the two, I love them both.

    It does indeed seem to fly along for an allegretto. But that's because of the many triplet 16th-note passages in it. If you ignore those for a moment and listen to all the duplet 16th-note passages earlier in, it is clear that it isn't as fast a tempo as the Allegro Moderato of the opening movement. For another example of the same thing, you might consider the Allegretto of Beethoven's "Waldstein" sonata. Once you get to the triplet 16th-note passages, it seems to be roaring right along. But it's a slower tempo than the first movement nonetheless.

    regarding Germany blocking this recording because they think it's Pires; this is a touch slower-more delicate and not as "steely", not a digital recording by any means and finally, if Germany is going to start acting up again, this time they will be eradicated. Hopefully the BPO will be on tour.

    She cuts off the end of her expression. She’s sounds like she is trying to get through it as fast as she can. Maybe she just thrills in her ability to do the scales as fast as she can. Speed with little expression. IMO of course.
