Clappers, Ban 板 - Chinese percussion

Музыка

In this episode Dr. Han explores Chinese wooden or bamboo clappers called ban 板. Used to accompany sung verse as well as Chinese opera music, these clappers look simple but took special skill to play. The Chinese storytelling demonstrated in this episode has been a popular form of entertainment for hundreds of years.

Loved everything about this video, but especially the "Chinese Rap" at the end. It finally MAKES SENSE to my students how the clappers can accompany poetry.

The guy at the end reminded me of performance in Appalachia, or United States Country Western music. Does any one else see that, too?

Recently, I have been watching a lot of historical Chinese dramas and have become fascinated with the drum sound that is occasiinally played in the dramas. It's usually played when a scene has become more dramatic or change to a scene that is more intense. The four treasures appears to be the instrument that most closely mimics the drum sound except in the film the sound is slightly deeper/more base (just slight. Possibly, it's the room its being recorded in, which gives it more texture, its almost hollow like). The Four Treasures, this would also explain the change in speed that occurs in the dramas. Sometimes it's very short slow claps, which are quickly followed by rapid claps that then fade. The sound really adds to the scene and one my favourite compoenents of the Chinese historical drama. Thank you very much. This has been a great lesson

I just found your channel. Thank you SO MUCH!!! My middle and high school World Music classes are just wrapping up our China unit and these videos are a perfect compliment, validation, and deepening of what we've been learning. Next time I teach this class, I will incorporate more of what I have learned from your channel. Thank you again, the timing couldn't have been more perfect!
