Clamping System For Gluing Guitars Tops

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I show how to glue and clamp a guitar top with this new clamping method. I also show how to make these clamps with a 2x4", some bolts, washers and nuts.

    Another bonus to this system I can see is space saving. Using every clamp you own +1 takes up a tonne of space, and if you're anything like me, space is almost as valuable as time, if not more so. Being able to dedicate a limited amount to bodies is a hope and a dream with traditional clamps, even if you have to throw the additional beam across the middle. Again, another innovative idea.

    Thanks Lloyd. Actually, I don't find them to be particularly space efficient, if anything they take up a lot of storage space ;( But they are definitely worth making and using!

    gotta say its just lovely system and simple. i already do it myself. as for glue sqeeze out, put some painters tape around the edge of the body as for the glue to be on the tape after clamping. then when removing the tape you will have less glue to deal with with.plus you will have plenty of room to rout the top of the guitar with a bottom bearing router bit!!

    Very simple, cheap and effective. So many of these diy panel clamping methods are needlessly over-complicated. This is my favorite kind of shop-built solution.

    Also, I love the idea of using dowels in the to-be-routed spots for alignment. I'm stealing that idea for sure.

    COOL IDEA, IF YOU DON'T CRANK THE NUTS DOWN SO HARD YOU WILL GET AN EVEN PRESUR IT DOESN'T NEED TO BE A TON OF PRESUR TO MATE TWO SURFACES IT JUST NEEDS TO BE AS EQUAL AS POSSIBLE. I REALLY ENJOY YOUR VIDEOS I LIKE HOW YOU MAKE YOUR OWN VERSION OF EVERYTHING IN YOUR SHOP, I TRY TO DO THE SAME THING. YOUR GUITARS AND JIGS ARE ALWAYS VERY CLEAN AND WELL THOUGHT OUT, KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK AND THANKS FOR SHARING YOUR GREAT IDEAS AND BADASS GUITARS.

    HEY I THINK I MAY HAVE A GOOD IDEA IN AIDING CENTER PRESUR TO THIS SYSTEM, HOW ABOUT IN THE CENTER OF THE TOP RAIL, GLUING A THIN PEICE OF CORK THAT WOULD SAVE TRYING TO GET THAT PERFECT ARC. YOU WOULD APPLY PRESUR UNTIL YOU SAW SQWEEZ OUT ON THE SIDES BEING AS CORK WILL COMPRESS QUITE A BIT. I'M SURE YOU HAVE MOVED ON TO A DIFFERENT SYSTEM BY NOW SO I'LL TRY IT AND LET YOU KNOW HOW IT WORKS.

    Hello, I enjoy your videos and I was wondering where you can get the wood for guitar building. I'm really interested in building a telecaster, with a top like yours. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

    Thanks. I get all my wood for guitar building from a local hardwood store. Try searching in Google for the words "hardwood" and then your area. Also, although I've never done it, you can buy wood online from ebay and other places.

    Actually, instead of flattening the bars, the best is to make them bowed having the lower point in the center. This way when you are tighting them, the center will have the most pressure, making a better joint in all the surface.

  • @nicolashrv

    @nicolashrv

    What I do instead, is to add an individual clamp for the center. Otherwise, you cannot access it (putting the extra bars like you did will only apply pressure on the top and bottom instead of the center)

    Yes, making a tapered version is a good idea. This was my first iteration at the jig...

  • @Barrygee

    Why not just make two larger versions of the clamps to use at 90 degrees to the others? That would clamp the middle section down without the need for the sash clamps

  • @simpleone1989
    @simpleone19898 жыл бұрын

    What if you deliberately tapered the ends of the clamps? That will make it exert pressure in the middle as you tighten the sides.

  • @Projectelectricguitar

    Thanks Simon. I did think about using shims or convex pieces but the difficulty is to get them to compensate just the right amount, i.e. equal to the amount of flex in the wood, or else the edges will not get enough clamping pressure. Another issue is that each piece will have a slightly different amount of flex and therefore would require a different amount of taper.

  • @nicolashrv

    @nicolashrv

    you could compensate this by alternating flat and bowed clamps? I do use this system on other pressings, and the bolts do bend the wood and the center is always having less pressure

  • @bluyaris

    @bluyaris

    Project Electric Guitar if you tighten enough the bolts... it doesnt really matter.The wood will bend until the edges press the body. Those screws can generate enough pressure to break the slats without any problem. I made a similar press some time ago, with the slats curved, and I put 4 pieces of 25mm melamine chipboard on each side of the body, so that the force is distributed more evenly.

    I agree that wingnuts would make the process go much faster but I suspect they would not apply the same amount of pressure... at least, I don't think I could tighten them by hand with enough pressure.

    Send me a couple of guitar body templates and I'll send you a Makita screw gun and a deep drive socket for your clamps. In a short while you will know when to get off the screw gun for the right pressure.You can put too much pressure on the joint. Start clamping in the middle and work towards the edges. Nice job and great tips.
