My grandpa owned this truck from about 1990-2004. It was used on the farm to haul grain and ran otr produce all over the eastern half of the US. We added the red dot ac on it in the mid 90's

Oh man, so glad you found this video! I bought this truck out of Nevada. I figured since it looked to be rot free that it must have spent more of it's life out west. Please tell me you have some pictures of it! Did you grandpa have the paint job done?

@@johnlucas5171 Yes we have pictures. It was a Ryder truck when we bought it and we had it painted in Vincennes, Indiana. It was a really good truck for us and ran lots of miles. It has many features of modern trucks. We hauled melons, grain, potatoes, ragu sauce and fruit out of Florida. It pulled a Chamberlain flat bottom grain trailer and a Dorsey smooth side stainless reefer.

It doesn't have much rust because when we came out of the north in the winter time we would either stop at home or go to truck wash in this area and get the salt off.

Those were my favorite cabover. They were the best looking to me. Love to find one of those to use for parades. Congrats on finding one in that good of conditions. Love to see her restored to like new. That’s going to be a good looking ride when you get done

I agree, they were a pretty special truck IMO. Super excited to start using it once we get it up to snuff and get a stacker trailer!

What a trip down memory lane this video is. I worked as a mechanic at Carmenita Ford in SoCal from '81 to '04. Saw and worked on dozens and dozens of these "Two Story Pinto" CLs. A/C was definitely a nightmare. 3 evaporators with lines and hoses running everywhere and chafing leaks galore. That cost Ford a ton of warranty repair money. Radiators are a potential headache too. It's got plenty of area, but being very tall and relatively narrow it only takes a few tubes to plug up and then it won't cool. Keeping up on coolant system maintenance is a must on a CL. Cab air suspension made it probably the most comfortable riding cabover ever made but the first ride in one makes you wonder if the cab is coming off the frame! When new the trucks came from the factory with shipping blocks installed on the cab shocks and removing them was a pre-delivery item. We got a truck in the shop one time that the delivering dealer hadn't removed the blocks and the customer was amazed at the difference in ride quality after we removed them. It was a few years old and still riding rigid! Thanks for posting this. It's a blast from the past for me.

Thanks for the info Paul! I will be doing a good coolant flush when I replace all the heater hose and such. Hopefully this radiator is still in decent shape. I still want to attempt to get the AC system going again. I will remake the lines with BMRS AN lines with a extra layer of abrasion sleeve on them. This is what we do for the AC lines on the twin turbo mustangs we build and they are a really nice line. Hopefully the evaporators aren't trashed, but I suppose I can make new ones if need be.

My older brother got to work on these trucks in the mid and late 80s as well. He said the first time he pulled out the lot in one he thought it was about to tip over! He is the one that found this truck for me and we are super excited to breathe some new life back into it!

@@johnlucas5171 And ALWAYS use only Distilled water in coolant to avoid adding minerals.

I agree, I think it will clean up nicely. I'm looking forward to cleaning the interior and getting the seats reupholstered and the carpet replaced. I'm going to keep the tanks that are on it, they were a rare upgrade option. Hopefully they polish up ok.

@@mintyman1968 They are factory. They were a factory option and are listed in the brochure. They were listed as Integral rectangular with battery carrier : dual 100-gallon in steel or aluminum. I have only seen one other truck with them and they were steel not aluminum. If you look at my post on Ford-trucks.com you will see I uploaded the factory brochure listing them on the last page. Also in that thread is another truck that recently sold that another guy on there bought that has the steel version of those tanks. Ya, the list is pretty long at this point! Getting it all itemized out and sorting by priority and will start chipping away at it. Hopefully it will be road worthy in 6-8 months. Fresh paint and such will come down the road, luckily it's halfway presentable now so that can wait for a bit.

Drove one of these from 81’-84’. A model cat if I remember correctly with a 13 speed. The thing I remember most is the feeling of the cab rolling off the frame in a corner. The air ride cab was second to none then and maybe now. I’ll keep a eye on your progress and best of luck.

Dang I'm jealous! I would of love to experienced one of these new!

We used to call this truck a “two story falcon”. I drove a rental one from Chicago to Detroit a few times delivering Schwinn bikes. The air ride cab takes some getting used to. That also was a long reach down to pay the toll. Good luck on the restore.

Pretty sure everyone did away with the front cab air bags because the cabs would sway so bad with them. Good in theory but bad in practicality. I wouldn’t put them back in unless you like being sea sick and feeling like you’re going to roll over at every turn. Beautiful truck though and nice to see someone wanting to keep the old iron working.

Ya, I would presume that is likely why they put the solid blocks in there. I'm going to swap the bags in and see how it does. I will keep the blocks on standby in case I decide to swap it back.

Thrilled that you plan to keep this truck original and also that you plan to put it on the road after it is done. We have 2 cl9000s, one on the road and another we are working on. Consider sharing where you access parts as you go along for those of us following your progress. Thanks

Old school cabover with a Cummins NTC400.

I may have some switches for your heater although their a bit rustey from age. It may be the same for you but my 85' most of the heaters work on vaccume (created from a little air pump in the pillar next to the high beam switch on the floor.) I found mine most of the actuator pots rusted out so I ended up replacing the whole system. For the fan speeds their is resistors screwed into the piping behind the dash that end up melting out due to the heat they generate.

@@jakem.6359 I understand people like to "make it their own" but I have great distain for most aftermarket products. They are usually poorly engineered and look like shit IMO.

Cab cylinder looks like a Freightliner cylinder.

I know it's a CLT9000 but I listed it as CL9000 as that is what most people search when they are looking for these trucks.

all internal combustion engines are motors, by definition, look it up. Why is Detroit known as motor city? Or ted nugent the motor city madman? The band motor head was really into electric motors? Why is it called a motor boat, or a motorcycle? Reality is staring you in the face.
