Civil War II #1 is Event Comics Excess - Comic Tropes (Episode 31)

Ойын-сауық

For the final episode of 2016, I took a look at the top-selling comics of the past year. The single best-selling issue was Civil War II #1. So we take a second look at the tropes of writer Brian Michael Bendis and also discuss the tropes of crossover event comics. In fact, there's so much to say, that we'll be back in a week to look at the overall Civil War II story and will discuss story structure.

You know what's stupid. They could have fixed the Tony Stark character inconsistency with two lines "Um Tony didn't you shoot Banner into space over something he MIGHT do?" "Yeah and because we did that an entire planet was killed and Bruce went crazy all because of something we thought Bruce MIGHT do." BAM. done. Shows character development for Tony and explains why Tony would be against it. because the last time he tried to pre punish someone it backfired BIG TIME.

That whole "drinks are definitely on me" bit seems especially wrong from my perspective, since there's a story in the 90s Invincible Iron Man series where Carol nearly killed Tony while drunk and in her Warbird persona before blacking out and ending up in the hospital. Granted, the two reconciled and Tony ended up sponsoring her at an AA meeting after defeating Ultimo, but there's a difference between characters moving past a crippling issue of theirs and going "LOL drinx".

What's really frustrating about She-Hulk supporting Carol was in her 00s series, she was actually assigned a case where she had to defend a man who killed someone because he had a device showing the victim was destined to kill him. Jennifer only said he was guilty and only defended because she was ordered to but eventually turned the case on its head by revealing the victim and perpetrator were the same person (it's complicated).

The content and tone of this episode is uniquely enlightening and engaging. I'd like to tell you why as well. To begin you obviously were interested in this book. Even though you don't like it in the end it's obvious you invested in reading it. Also, you have a great knowledge of both the lore and the authorship, which allows you to contextualize your thoughts, and you find excellent panels to illustrate examples. And you have a positive, expansive, taste that isn't cynical, or snide, and is secure enough to not take disagreement personally. I remember when *Infinity Gauntlet* came out in the early nineties, I thought, "Oh no, not *another* Marvel event!!" Not too long before we had *Marvel Superheroes Secret Wars* between 1984-85, *THE* original crossover event (and still the best) which went on to gain widespread acclaim, then we had *Secret Wars II,* which didn't really live up to the original's expectations. Then came *Acts Of Vengeance,* spread over many Marvel titles what I thought was a good idea (pitching heroes against unfamiliar foes they're not used to). When this came along, I'd reached event fatigue and decided to give it a miss (and we haven't come to the *Onslaught* saga yet!!!)

Free real estate, I guess. Note also that them finding out about things that would happen was a central element in the series this happened in: Jean Grey in particular was pretty unhappy about the whole Dark Phoenix thing, and refused to return (as you would), so it's not like Bendis just didn't think of this. And of course, the comic book answer "whatever, don't think about it" is probably the right one here.

I had to laugh when 1. The Celestial had minions. and 2. The superheroes dropped the Celestial like it was a second rate supervillain. Obviously Bendis has only kind of HEARD the name Celestial, heard that they were kind of powerful, and though, "Hey. That would be a cool villain to put up against the heroes in my book!" without actually looking up what they were, how they worked, or anything about them. Celestials are so far beyond any of these heroes that nothing they could do would even be noticeable by them, which is why one having minions is so damn laughable. Also of note, the people who wrote Guardians of the Galaxy 2 also don't seem to understand the comic Celestials either because they seemed to think that Ego was one as well, when in actuality, if the Celestials showed up to judge Ego, he wouldn't be able to do a damn thing about it. BlackburnBigdragon If I remember correctly the celestials were such a big deal that they rarely made a direct appearance in the comics. You would the aftermath when they visited another planet, a few else worlds stories that ended in the complete destruction of the marvel universe, and a few near misses where they essentially hide and waited for the celestials to pass. They weren’t villains you fought so much as a force of nature you tried to survive.

Kyriss12: Exactly my point. Now explain to me why one just decided to spontaneously show up on Earth, with a bunch of supervillain-like goons, only to be easily knocked-out like "Glass Joe" in a game of "Super Punch Out". Yeah. Who wrote this comic again? Did he ever READ past Marvel comics? Did he KNOW who the damn Celestials were? It sounds to me that this guy just kind of, "heard of them" and "Heard that they were powerful" and tossed them in. The comic "Marvel Zombies" also had this problem too. They had Galactus show up. The zombie superheroes actually somehow knocked Galactus off of his feet, beat the crap out of him while he was down, and then ate him. I was like, "Um... what? Galactus is made of the Power Cosmic. These guys, zombies or not, wouldn't even be able to penetrate his armor, let alone his... skin... if he has... skin..." I don't know what it was with that time period of seriously de-powering Marvels entities of the universe to turn them into wimps that the heroes could just easily punch into pulp, but given everything that we knew about them prior, it never, ever, could have happened!!! What was next? Spider Man winning an arm wrestle with Eternity? Oh wait. Everything was gritty and ultra-violent back then. It would have to be The Punisher shooting Eternity, ripping his head off, shoving his head into his butt, cutting his gut open (because Eternity will have a gut... a bloody one.) and he'll die horribly. and The Punisher will say a one liner like, "My bullets are eternal!". And The Punisher will be drawn with 1000 times more muscle than he used to be drawn. he will be like the hulk. They wanted the idea of vast and unknowable power to be closer to home and even in his home in Peter Quill's case. Having magical space giants just show up could be interesting, but at the end of the day they wanted to humanize what is essentially an inhuman concept while also connecting it to the main cast as opposed to something utterly divorced from them. In other words, its an adaptation. You know where you're adapting a source and not coping it beat for beat. New character dynamics are sort of the rule and not the exception. Plus I'd point out the fact that Guardians one foreshadows the Celestials at every turn. Nowhere is the freaking head of a Celestial and we even see one destroying a planet causally. And that's not even getting into the fact that Comic Ego doesn't ever seem as close to as strong as his movie counterpart., but the movie counter part also isn't close to as strong as other Celestials we've seen in the films. So my point ends up being, they're obviously doing their own thing and so maybe take it for what it is? An utterly divorced continuity where characters and events can and will be fundamentally different from their comic expressions.

Your complaint about the formerly tough foes being whipped is why I love Hickman. When alternate Terrax shows up in New Avengers, he’s treated with respect a badass minor character should have. It’s one of my favorite moments of the run bc Terrax the Enlightened comes off like a total badass even though they eventually take him out. Edit: the Ulysses character and story would’ve worked way better if they’d scrapped the event and developed it over a period of time, finally coming to a head in a mini-event. But like you said, Civil War the film and all that. Ugh.

It's that whole shoe-horned in story crossover Marvel seems to love of late. The pacing , set up and conclusion come out of nowhere, go nowhere, ends with little interest and everyone gets on with things, only now we're a character down for no real reason. It read as the quivalent of one person calling another and saying "We should meet up for a war, 8 o'clock good for you? Great, I'll round some people up. Gotta be finished by 10pm though as work in the morning. OK byeeee"

Jim Rhodes and She Hulk weren't killed/hurt off panel they were killed/hurt in a previous issue: Free Comic Book Day Civil War II. Which is a different complaint/trope of event comics: important things happening in an issue that isn't in the main series or in an issue that is obscure . But killing Rhodey as a plot device to service other characters is crap. Iron Man's complaint that they shouldn't act on a warning of danger because superheroes might get hurt makes no sense (we're not talking about arresting innocents we're talking about guarding a facility from a robbery).

I think they need to hire a comic guy as one of the script writers. Someone that actually reads and remembers all this stuff to keep things straight. Writers only know their own stories, they don't read, remember, or keep notes on what was written before they came onboard. They need an outsider whose sole purpose is to keep all this shit straight.
