May 15, 1864 - The Battle of New Market, Virginia was fought during the spring 1864 Valley Campaign of the American Civil War. A makeshift Confederate army of 4,100 men, which included cadets from the Virginia Military Institute (VMI), defeated Union Major General Franz Sigel and his Army of the Shenandoah during a driving rain storm.
Shot on location on the original battlefield, now owned and managed by VMI.
Re-enacting Retro - A well-produced 125th Anniversary Re-enactment film first released after the May 1989 125th Anniversary Re-enactment. Video Visions shot video footage (on Beta SP and other analog formats popular at the time) and produced this video. They, along with Classic Images, captured nearly all of the 125th Anniversary events on Video for VHS release at the time.
We hope you enjoy. This is another in a series of postings on our KZread channel of a cool New series of Old videos -- featured only on here -- taken from a personal collection of re-enacting films and videos from the 1980s that can't be found anywhere else, or else we've tried to find them for nostalgia's sake, but did our own digging and presenting the results of our treasure hunt here. Some are taken from VHS originals or DVD transfers from those VHS copies. Originals were in Standard Def or Videotaped off of TV when they first aired. Some shot professionally and others by individuals with "portable" home video cameras on their shoulders.
Some Classic Re-enacting videos are already searchable on KZread, but we wanted to start a new series of some rarely or never before seen classics that either only aired once or where short lived and available only to a select few at the time. We hope you enjoy. These programs presented in this RE-ENACTING RETRO series are presented for the enjoyment of all and we don't claim them for ourselves.

It’s easy to forget how young some of these kids were and that it was pouring rain the field was so muddy it pulled the shoes off their feet. I live close to New Market and have always loved going there to visit and go to see the reenactment every year . If you’ve never been there or to the reenactment you should at least once go see it.

I was at this event, with the 7th Tennessee infantry and was recruited by VMI to bolster their numbers. I have this on VHS tape. I've participated in many, probably about 20 New Market reenactments, the 125 series was outstanding. I did see myself but also many long gone friends. Thanks for uploading these gems!

With such massed gunfire from infantry and artillery into tightly packed formations, it's a wonder that anyone survived! Such horrendous casualties! 🇺🇸

this must have been the inspiration for the battle scene of John Wayne 'Horse soldiers' when the Union Cavalry met the local military boys school...

It is interesting to find out from this that the 13 VMI cadets that they remember were not all part of that unit that charged across the field to seize the Federal guns, instead that they were killed throughout the battlefield. There's a lot small details we don't know about them. I think that Field of lost shoes movie is not entirely accurate.

Hello LionHearts Filmworks, I was looking around in your playlists section for world war and I think there was an error or something because there's a CNBC Video inside the list about corona or something. Just wanted to let you know :)

I have only been there once but when I saw the battlefield and the museum I felt very proud that I wasn’t living around at that time and I also felt sorry for the cadets of the Virginia military institute who where sort of around my age because even though I am from the north aka the Union I learned things from the southern point of view like how my hero stonewall Jackson broke some of the laws at that time and What I mean is he taught African American kids to read and write and i would say that if I were in Jackson’s shoes there I would have done the same thing and I would have also teach the kids to read the Bible

Stonewall Jackson didn’t do anything that special by doing that. Even though it was illegal many other people in the south did it. It was simply a Sunday school. He was a slave owner at heart and was not an African American vigilante or special figure. Just another typical man. A great leader and strategist. But nothing more and nothing less
