Ive been going to City Road for years since I was a kid because I used to have friends who used to live in the Micawber Court flats on Windsor Terrace just of City Road on the Hackney/Islington border and my friends moved from City Road in the year 2000.Every time used to get the 205 bus from King's Cross to work at Fenchurch St I used to go through City Road and I wondered what the abandoned building is next to the Kestrel tower block and I discovered on a KZread video a few months ago that it used to be a old tube station called City Road. It would have been nice to have it open now. City Road is one of my favourite places in London.

Used to work for a charity based at Rococo House a hundred yards up from this on City Road (around 1990, back in the days when you still accessed Angel from the old City Road entrance and you felt like you were on some death-defying fairground ride on that narrow platform!). Often wondered about what this curious building was it and I only really remembered it when I saw something about “City Road station” in a book and recognised the structure in the picture! Great to hear a more detailed version of its story though and to see some pictures of it as a station 👍 Excellent stuff as ever 🤓

Both Central and Victoria lines seems to have got worse in recent years with new signalling and more frequent and higher powered trains. Good to see anything that can help, especially in summer, but do people want the released heat? Southampton uses an absorption heat pump to turn waste heat into cooling, which could be a useful option.

A long time ago I used to commute to The City University (now "City, University of London") via the old Angel station. I remember the narrow platform with the stairs at the end (not very wheelchair-friendly) and then a corridor to the two lifts. Angel station still had wooden lifts when I started and they were always had an attendant/ticket collector. They had two sets of doors opposite each other but only one set were open at a time. Later on, steel user-operated lifts replaced them. I vividly remember having to climb the long spiral staircase when the lifts were out of service and feeling that my legs were turning to jelly when I neared the top. I switched to Barbican station when I knew the lifts were out at Angel. If City Road station had still been operational it would have been closer to the college. Just a walk down Moreland Street to Northampton Square, more convenient than Angel or Barbican.

Here's a possibility: Since it was such an early tube, perhaps they liked having a lot of stations as it made tunnel building easier? If you're having to build an access point to pull spoil out from the workings, it probably doesn't take a lot of extra digging to make it a station?

Hello, Jago - your comment that City Road was not exactly affluent has one supporter. I worked with an advertising manager who described the City Road area as "the arsehole of the universe." As for Angel, thank goodness it does have such a wide platform. Previously, it was terrifyingly and dangerously narrow, not least during such hour. The only thing more terrifying was to be found in the lifts at Angel. Someone had scratched into the woodwork of the lifts the names of the Tottenham Hotspur double-winning team of 1961. The names were still there in 1978... As ever, thank you and stay safe.

The Shining was filmed at Elstree Studios, wasn't it? Maybe the architect did some work on that movie set, or intended it as a tribute to the fact that it was filmed in the UK instead of Hollywood. Although if that were the case, you'd think they'd throw in a tribute to Star Wars, since the original trilogy are probably the most famous movies filmed there.

Yes, the tube is a little bit of a sauna in the summer. We've got a sewage water heat exchanger in Vancouver. A lot of the "skytrain" system is elevated. Probably not enough of an underground section to exchange what heat we have. Great idea though.

Thanks for another fun trip. I suppose the answer to the question "is Bunhill 2 is a good idea or a red elephant?" (naming convention?), would be found in the answer to another question...does it work? If it does provide heat and hot water as intended, and at a lower cost than other methods, then it's probably a good idea. If it doesn't work, then it's a money sink. Here in the States, we'd be wondering who got the government grant to build it.

Does not have to be at a lower cost, as part is to cool the tube. Something similar planned for south wimbledon in part of the high path developments (maybe, could be another dropped promise in them), and they forget despite the tunnel entrance a mile + away winter the northbounds bring freezing air from morden depot all the way to tooting.

Several early underground lines were built with stations relatively close together, notably the Paris Metro, but also the Piccadilly (e.g. Covent Garden and the closed Down Street and Dover Street). Some lightly used stations have been closed to speed up journeys as the tube extended into the suburbs. However Angel now has big gaps to both Kings Cross and Old Street so is very busy.

Londons Subway system was probably the coolest thing about London for me. So neat and efficient. The stations were so deep and the older line stations were so weirdly intertwined. Some stations seemed like a deathtrap if a fire were to break out though!

You can still see the stairs that lead to street level from the train when stopped at a signal. I believe that as with some other abandoned stations this could still be used to evacuate people from the tube during an emergency.
