City of London, St Michael, Cornhill - Bristol Surprise Maximus

Музыка

(Recorded 31/03/2012)
The rounds before and first lead of a peal attempt of Spliced Surprise Maximus at St Michael, Cornhill in London. These are a rather good new Taylor 12 (the tenor certainly is a very good bell) and have been in a little while now, but little seems to have been done to improve how they sound in the tower. The acoustics of the tower were one of the main problems with the old bells, and it's still a problem with these new ones. The poor acoustics are probably also partly responsible for us not being able to achieve a good enough standard of ringing after an hour, which is why the conductor made the correct decision to set the bells up.
I'm afraid I am not visible in this video, as I was ringing the 3rd and there wasn't a ledge to place my camera behind me.

Finally; a video of the new bells! They are rather nice and don't sound this bad in this video, but then again, recordings and real life can sound quite different. I'm going to find a video of the old bells now, for comparison.

I do agree, not much point in keeping the old bells. Dad never liked them, he also said they were to heavy for the tower.I thought they sounded dreadful, I suppose when you mix old and new unless it is done well then this is the result. I think something to keep in mind that the sound of the bells depends on 3 major things, The bells them selves, the tower and the surrounds that the church is in. Personally I think that Yorkminster got all 3 right. The jewel in the Taylor crown without a doubt

I was speaking to Tony Kench and they have been trying all sorts to improve them acoustically. For some reason it just seems to be a very challenging tower to get the acoustics right

But "just another modern peal" is surely better for all those involved at Cornhill-there is little point in keeping an inferior ring which is too heavy for the tower and with some bells not the easiest to ring. Bow are good, but not the best twelve for thier weight.

You may think they were crap bells, I didn't like them either and it was My old man who installed them in the first place, They are just another modern peal, Bow walks all over them. Also just because a peal is modern ie simpson tuned doesnt mean they are the greatest. St Pauls which is a Taylor peal is not simpson tuned some would say they are pots but me I think they are THE sound of LONDON. PS I respect you opinion regardless of my opinion Cheers Steve son of Ernie ex Whitechapel

The majority of the old twelve were complete and utter shite-well done to those who had the conviction to see the new twelve installed.
