City of Gold - Official Trailer I HD I IFC Films

Фильм және анимация

In Theaters March 11th, 2016
Starring: Jonathan Gold
In this richly penetrating documentary odyssey, Pulitzer Prize-winning food critic Jonathan Gold shows us a Los Angeles where ethnic cooking is a kaleidoscopic portal to the mysteries of an unwieldy city and the soul of America. Combing through colorful neighborhoods in his green pickup truck, Gold is sniffing out his next strip-mall discovery-whether Oaxacan grasshopper soup, hand-cut tonkotsu ramen, or a particularly unctuous pad see ew. As piping-hot platters are served up, so are stories of immigrants whose secret family recipes are like sacred offerings pledged for the opportunity to build their American Dream. With eternal curiosity, razor-sharp intellect, and existential longing, Gold is a culinary geographer taking us where no critic has gone before.

Thanks Mr. Gold for giving voice to the mom and pop immigrants who serve amazing ethnic food. It's one of the great aspects of living in Los Angeles.

R.I.P. Mr. Gold, you leave a void in this world no one can fill. You always cheered for the underdogs.

We are what we eat and that is why this doc is definitely special and unique in every sense. Culturally, historically, economically and diversity rich in flavors, colors and aromas. Gold finds his way trough wild and locals only type of restaurants and food truck vendors as a fish knows where to find the cleanest unpolluted waters. Great professional work in art, poetry and story telling, from punk rock to classical music, and much much more. LA riots by the end of the doc with its very sensitive, heart to heart letter wrote from Gold to the city of LA and its inhabitants made my eyes wet. This piece of culture and understanding of humanity is worth your time. Enjoy!

The comments are all over the place. "Nutritionism" had taken over, unfortunately. This documentary is about a brilliant food critic, if you don't enjoy food then what the hell are you doing here?

Jonathan says "I do all the stuff you're supposed to do." Sadly, the one thing he does that you're NOT supposed to do, is that he does not eat in moderation. He is a medical health catastrophe waiting to happen (diabetes, heart attack, knee and/or hip replacement, and more). I'm sure he could write his reviews equally as well of the food, the service, the ambiance, etc., with only a few bits of each dish. Is the food literally worth dying for?

+food4 thought he doesn't clean the plate. Most food critics sample and taste; they bring friends and family to enjoy the experience with them (as Jonathan does in the film and in real life).

+Rick Vaughn -- While I am aware of how "most food critics" limit their personal food consumption, as you describe, my reference was precisely that if one looks at his physical appearance, it is sadly apparent that he "does" clean too much of the plate (or just too many plates) for his own personal health. Absent some medical condition (like hypothyroidism or others), he is clearly obese and a medical health catastrophe waiting to happen! I suspect his physician would tell him he needs to lose 75+ pounds - not that he has listened, if he does maintain regular preventive/wellness care visits to his physician. It's just sad to see the talented not see the need to take care of themselves and modify how they do what they do....

I hate food. I spend way too much time, money, and brainpower on it. I wish I can just take a pill that is designed for my genetic needs. There's more important things to do in this world than cooking and eating.

+Indigo Osmanthus your "genetic needs"? I don't even know what that means. Have you ever had an amazing ribeye or perfect tomatoes with olive oil? Are you nuts? The brain gets off having good meals, it is how we stay sane and connected. Our relationship with food is one of the most intimate and sublime a human can have! It connects us with nature through agriculture, and makes us appreciate the fact that we depend on this hair-thin layer called the stratosphere for survival. Get your soul back, woman!

  • @lilacosmanthus

Evelyn Vela Agriculture isn't fucking nature. It is us domesticating plants and seeds to our needs. (yes, we don't just domesticate animals) You want nature? Throw yourself into the woods or forests and see if you can sustain yourself. Connected to what? Our animal instincts? No thanks. I'm pretty sure my sanity is more dependent on my boss not acting like a senile baby boomer. And I've lived in London, Shanghai, New York, and Los Angeles. Food, I've seen. Food, I've had. And as of yet, nothing is as pure and pleasant as a day without having to buy or cook food. Genetic needs mean I can't just eat grass off the road because I don't have the enzyme to process it. Not exactly rocket science here.

Are you on that Soylent stuff?? Saying agriculture is not nature is like saying humans are not part of the environment. Agriculture has evolved to be what it is today, for better or worse, but it is still very much dominated by the laws of nature and the environment. Also avoiding profanity might have helped you make your point, now you just look unstable.

Evelyn Vela No I'm not on Soylent, which is a digression on Marlon's part. I have no intention on spending that much money on bland soy milk. Humans are indeed very much removed from the environment. What are you talking about?
