It's our second anniversary this week and we're celebrating by going back into the vault and remastering one of our very first episodes featuring the 2002 Brazilian crime epic, City of God. If you've heard this episode before, you haven't heard it like this. If you've never heard it, you're in for a treat as this remains one of our favourite episodes of the podcast to date and we're excited to be representing it in the Redux format.

a little piece of information: The kids from the end of the movie, formed one of the most notorious gangs in brazil, called comando vermelho (red command). Seu jorge sings the opening song of the movie. knochout ned (played by seu jorge) litheraly translates as mani chicken. so in the opening scene, little dice was about to eat chicken with carrot. anyway, sorry for my bad english. cheers from brazil, have a good one

Oh, there are also movies about rich gangsters in Brazil... including politicians running things in the background (Elite Squad 2). And as well, there are PLENTY of gangster american movies that take place only in slums, where the bosses also live in the hoods...
You should check Elite Squad 1 and 2, they have a similar theme (but from the cops perspective), and is also edited by the same guy as City of God, Daniel Rezende. He also directed an amazing movie called Bingo, but with a very distinct theme. PS: As for the Cristo Redentor (the giant statue of Crist), the movie mentions right at the start that they are "far from the postal cards of Rio".

When you see those famous shots of the Corcovado mountain where the Christ Statue is you can see like just 20% of Rio City. Rio famous spots and the city center is on the very east part of the citye... the "West Zone", that is actually, the biggest part of the city, where is the City of God, this part is not famous.
