⁴ᴷ City Drive

By request, we drive around Henderson Point, Mississippi, spilling over into Pass Christian. The effects of Hurricane Katrina are still evident here today, nearly 20 years later, with many of the lots closest to the Gulf of Mexico and Bay St. Louis still empty and abandoned. We also see a former alignment of US-90 that was bypassed around the turn of the century to include a new viaduct over the CSX railroad tracks.

While I am enjoying your road trip on 11 North, through New York, I stopped immediately when I saw "Pass Christian." My heart lives in the South. Always has, always will.

Next time we're out that way, we'll get some video around the actual old town area. Last year, we stopped for breakfast at a place called "Fillup with Billups" (named for an old chain of gas stations in Mississippi). That little area right off of Highway 90, with the beach in view is so nice. Unfortunatly, Billups shut down at some point in the last year. But I'd like to check out some of the other restaruants in that area.

Impressive drive, Jason. Also nice to see that the good citizens there have taken the proper precautions for storm surge in lieu of hurricane season. Camille and Katrina taught them some hard lessons, I figure. (And I'm guessing Ida was no picnic either.)

I’m not sure what Ida did out there. But the year that we got into the Greek letters (2021?), we were in Biloxi for one of those late storms that hit out near Lake Charles, Louisiana and it was pretty rough out there in Biloxi, over 200 miles from where the storm made landfall. Note that the few homes that remain on the point, and all of the homes to the north adjacent to the bay, are 20 feet up in the air. If they have a “ground floor”, they have breakaway walls that will prevent the house from being swept away. Anything on ground level gets sacrificed. Presumably the homes have generators and can work off the grid for some amount of time after a storm.

@@504RoadTrips That must have been Beta, the second storm to hit that area that year after Laura whacked it in late August. I find it interesting, though, that Beta could do that much damage that far away, but Zeta, which went almost directly over and just east of NOLA, seemed to do less damage.

@@anthonyjkenn6319 the path of Zeta’s eye missed my house by less than 1000 feet. But Zeta went through so fast that it didn’t have time to do much damage. I stood out on my porch for most of it. Watched my neighbor’s tree go down. It was over in a matter of a couple of hours. I think we were without electricity for 2 days. Ida went to our west, but it was a slow mover. The winds pounded on us for what seemed like 24 hours. It did a lot more damage. Fences down, shingles off the roof of my rental property. And no power for 8 or 9 days at home.
