Citizen: The Most Important Title in American Democracy | Chris Hand | TEDxJacksonville

Each of us holds the most important title in American democracy: citizen. Yet most Americans believe we are powerless to make government respond or hold public officials accountable. A 2015 Pew Charitable Trusts survey found that 74% of Americans believe that most elected officials don’t care what people like us think. But we can make them listen-if we fully embrace our rights and responsibilities as citizens in a democracy, and use the skills of effective citizenship to make government work for us. This is not just a theory. Americans frequently prove that we can make government respond. We, the people, are the beginning and the end of our democracy-and today, more than ever, we must build and flex our citizenship muscles to fulfill that exalted status.

As someone who is doing their homework on this video: to some extent, most Americans are RIGHT, but that doesn't mean they can't make officials listen. We've just been taught to view politics as just voting people into office and hoping for the best, and that just doesn't work. Successful politics goes beyond electoralism, whether you're lobbying within the bureaucracy or protesting outside of it.

This is the kind of talk that we give to children. In America grown adults take this seriously. “You are important in our democratic country. We have many rights and freedoms here,” 😂😂

Voting has never been tried in the USA in at least the past 50 years.

When was the last time that at least 80% of the electorate (those eligible to vote) were well-informed, free of misinformation and disinformation AND devoted their time, energy, talents and resources to the political process to make sure that only the most Loving/most Wise among us become our public servants? There are 330 million people in the USA. 222 million are eligible to vote. This constitutes the total electorate. 69 million (31% of the total electorate) are between 18-34 yo (the youth). In the 2016 primary, only 61 million (27% of the total electorate) turned out to vote. Only 4 million (6%) of the youth electorate (69 million). In the 2016 general election, only 124 million (56%) of the total electorate (222 million) came out to vote. a) Only 24 million (35%) of the youth electorate (69 million)...19% of the total turnout. b) 46% of eligible 18-24 yo were not even registered to vote. c) 37% of eligible people with incomes under $30,000 were not even registered to vote. Hillary got 2.9 million more votes than Trump. 65,844,954 voted for Hillary. 62,979,879 voted for Trump. >>>A whopping 98 million (44% of the electorate of 222 million) did not vote. Had only 64% of them voted for a progressive candidate, that person would have been the President of the USA. Let this fact sink in.

The USA is a progressive nation. At least 60% (133 million) of the total electorate is progressive. It is the low turnout that makes it seem that it is not. Progressive types, like the youth, the artists, the musicians, and the spiritual people, are failing to turn out in full force. And the ones who are voting are not well-informed and so they waste their vote by not voting for the most progressive candidate on the ballot. We are here to make sure that at least 80% of them (107 million) are well-informed, free of disinformation and misinformation, on all the major issues of today AND able, willing and ready to invest their time, energy, talents and resources to the political process to make sure that only the most Loving/most Wise among us become our public servants, from the councilperson to the President.

In a way he spoke truth, but then he went social justice with it and while I do not like racism. I think we have enough social justice warriors. We need innovators and people fighting to make a difference for all and not just more identity politics.

@@twiexcursori there was no evidence that that actually happened as reported. its reported to have occurred as being done by racists. No one was ever charged for it, thus it could have been done by those who called it in.
