In this video, we'll take a look at an established Citizen dive watch that is finally available for the US and other international markets. The "Fugu", named for its pufferfish case back and distinctive bezel design, is one of the best automatic dive watches for its around $500 price point. What do you think of this watch?

This video is great man! As a workin man I am not going to be buying multi thousand dollar watches (the absolute most I would ever spend on a watch is around $1000 give or take). Its nice to see you covering a brand like citizen who makes quality, dependable, and nice watches for the workin man. Much appreciated Sir 👍 and yes I am a fan of Citizen watches obviously heh.
I like these, but I really like the Eco-Drive Divers. When I think Citizen, I think phenomenal solar quartz movements. Give me a sapphire crystal on one of those and it’s a home run tool watch.

Closest option, though not strictly a diver, is the Citizen pro master land PMD56-2952.. proper tool watch style. 39mm. Titanium. Downsides: JDM, bit funky to get the radio-control feature to work outside Japan.

Considering the fact that citizen dive watches crush at depths far below their rating in pressure tests, saphire isn't necessary. It would just needessly jack the price up.
@brianmsahin

@@MercilessGuitar151 Crush might not be the best word to use there! Lol. But you're right!! It does add to the cost. I suppose the sapphire is really just for the anti scratch resistance. I dive myself and have a couple of Citizens, the mineral glass on one of them is fine but the other one took a big scratch across the face from a rock outcrop. I was able to change it out, but for divers scrabbling around on the ocean floor, sapphire is offering that extra protection.

I have the RED bezel version of this Promaster FUGU Collection and I simply love it! The bezel design is really nice and the grip feels good, also the lovely puffer fish 🐡 on the back is very cool! For this price point to have a sapphire crystal and 200 meters of water resistance with ISO certification is something else… well done CITIZEN 👏🏻
It's great to see Citizen finally cater to the desires of watch enthusiasts beyond the basic expectations of Japan's salary men.
Being a NAUI Certified diver since 1979 and a USA Swim Coach since United States Swimming was formed, you would think I would have a dive watch, but I don't! This Citizen Promaster looks like it would fit in my budget, and I do like the different look of the bezel.
Citizen has been on a roll lately with their new line of automatic pieces.
I have the Promaster ecodrive version. Great watch, love everything about it. This looks like it would wear too big for a small wrist, but definitely have to give Citizen lots of love and respect.
Sweet watch. Need a 40 to 42 mm. As a tech Diver I logged over 200 deep dives with citizen. Every serious or wanna be diver I knew had one of the various models with built in depth gauge!
These look pretty nice, and I'm liking the 8204 movement. I own the original 8203 equipped Promaster, probably from the 90s, and it does look very similar, so I probably won't be rushing out to get one of these, but it's nice to see Citizen listening to the enthusiasts.
44mm is a little large for daily wear. 40-41mm seems to be the sweet spot.

I agree but Citizen aims for masses and they do want big watches. For my medium wrist 6 and 3/4 of inch 40-42mm is ideal.
The Citizen NY0040, NY0085/86 are still being manufactured today and newer versions come with the Miyota 8204 caliber

I love this! I have an eco-drive promaster diver, but I would absolutely consider getting an automatic...once I have paid for this year's vacation.
Great Citizen's diver review. Comparison with other Japanese diver manufacturers was spot on. Condensed and precise description of Citizen watch company, what it is and what it could be potentially. Thanks Teddy
I have just recently purchased an eco drive watch; the Promaster sailhawk, and it is just amazing. I am a dive instructor so all the functions, especially the timer are super useful to me. I feel just as confident diving with it as a true diver, it is so awesome.
Nice review Ted. About time someone like you gave the Citizen brand a recognition it deserves and putting it on the collectors/enthusiasts map. I just recently held a few of these divers in my hands at my local jewellers and they feel no less in quality and quantity than its various Swiss and Japanese counterparts. While I got you could you please do a review on SEIKO PROSPEX SPEEDTIMER SRQ037J1? Would be interested in your thoughts. Cheers mate.
I bought the green one two years back, it is an amazing watch, and for the price, you don't think it would take people's attention but it did.
I’m very happy to be a proud owner of an NY0040 with fully lumed dial. It has an 8204 movement with hacking & hand winding. For me, it’s 42mm diameter is a perfect size.

I like the bigger size for my large wrist 👍🏼thanks Citizen ,I still got my diver from 94 ,I'm gonna purchase this
They really need to put the highbeat 9015 movement in these to get more sales to watch enthusiasts. Got the quartz instead as it is just as jerky as the 8200 movement and is more accurate being quartz.

Thanks, Teddy! You teach us something new every video!
Teddy’s intro tune has absolutely no right to slap as hard as it does!
I got the 42mm Fugu in 2018, I haven’t had a better driver on my 6.5” wrist, it’s just perfect with slender lugs and that non-angular case shape that just melts on the wrist. I wouldn’t swap it for a 44mm for sure.
Just picked up the green dial 42mm Fugu and I'm very happy with it. Fantastic watch for the price!
I own the White dial FUGU and think it is very good. The bezel ailment is perfect and function is +5sec/day. Way to go,Citizen.
I bought the NY0040 black dial and full lume dial, both under $200. Seikos may look more attractive at first, more flashy. But Citizen, once you acquire a taste for them, I think have a more understated and timeless beauty, The black dial of the NY0040 is so legible, and a beautiful inky, glossy deep black. The full lume is nice, on a generic bracelet, but it is less legible, as Teddy said, it blends in with the dial. The Fugu, actually has more legible hands, longer and with a more defined outline. Both the Fugu and NY0040 series have a case larger than the bezel of 1 or 2 millimeters. So the actual dial look smaller than expected. I had the SKX007 years ago, but I did not like the flat hour markers and dial. The NY0040 looks more interesting. I have the Eco-Drive BN0151, which is nice and has a better bezel. But the dial of the automatic watches is definitely nicer. The Seiko watches I really like retail for $1000 or so, I find Citizen's offerings in the sub 500 USD more appealing.
This looks great, a few drawbacks, but great. For one at over $500 I'd have liked to have seen a milled clasp. I'd also like to see a smaller version as well, especially for those of us who like the styling though can't accommodate a watch this size. Fantastic work with the review and it's nice to see more affordable pieces on the channel.

Just buy the older version. It's 41.5mm and cost around £150. There are some for £172 on Amazon t the mo & some on ebay for £180. I got mine for £163 Jan with the 8204 movement
Great watches. I have the white dial version Fugu and love it even if it doesnt hack. ( 8203) I noticed the green dial version in your review was a 8203 movement as well. ( unless it was just on the dial ) Good review thank you ..
I have the Eco-Drive. These look great. Clean dial, no ugly PADI logo like on the Seiko. Citizen should offer some color variations and sapphire for the eco-drive.
Nice review, Teddy, thank you 👍🙂. Warming up to this watch.
Nice touch seeing a well loved Griptillian in the end shots!
Well, actually I bought a Ny0040, and it is hackable. There is a generation of Ny0040, between 2020 and 2021, that included the movement 8204, instead of the non-hackable 8203. Although the movement is different, on the dial it says 8203, I guess they had extra dials and cases and built a few of them.

I have the NY0040. Most accurate watch I have. Very tough too. I like the upgrades, but mine has the 8204, and the mineral crystal has not scratched. Yet. I ordered a new strap.
Great video 🔥. Thanks to you I’m learning a lot about watch 🙏🏻
The review I've been waiting for. As a Citizen fan with a BN0150 and a BJ7111-51M in my collection, I was keen to see Teddy's review. On the whole, I like the look of this new range, however, upgrade the crystal and downgrade the clasp is a mistake. I think I'd struggle with the accuracy too, my Citizen Quartz models and my 16 year old Planet Ocean beat it. The one I'm really looking forward to is the Citizen Challenge Diver, which I believe is being released in the summer.
It's a left hand drive Seiko! I love it!

I just purchased the Asia Limited model with white dial. It's quite a nice watch.
I bought this a while back from Singapore and I've been fairly happy with my purchase. The lume is excellent and the only thing I didn't like is the strap. I changed it with a silicon rubber strap I got from Amazon and it feels more comfortable to wear vs the original straps.
I like the green dial version but not crazy with the bracelet. There is an aftermarket bracelet made for the NY0040. As they are both 20mm wonder if the pin placement is close enough to swap bracelets. Yes, it is as the new bracelet fit without any issues. Has screw in links and 3 micro adjustments. Great upgrade from the stock bracelet and get a better fit. Have been wearing this watch for a few weeks now and like that the crown is at 8 o'clock.
I've got a promaster diver eco drive, blue dial. Love love love it. Think citizen promasters and seiko propex are great watches for everyday users. The luxury watch, I own an oyster perpetual from 1971. Its a beauty but its mostly a safe queen unless there is a wedding or a special event.
Excellent review Teddy, good looking watches, I have a couple of the older ones and still in regular diving use. Sapphire is adding to the price as someone here mentioned, but having scratched one of mine on a rock outcrop I think on balance the extra cash to get sapphire is a good idea. Still, they are probably leaning a bit towards the expensive side for what they are. I imagine that deals will be available further down the road, so might not be necessary to pay full retail. I got a $110 off a Seiko Prospex with sapphire recently in a Seiko AD in Istanbul (fully lined up, I only buy Seiko's I can inspect!) so it might be worth waiting a bit to see if any bargains appear.

42mm with 20mm lug width?
Always loved Promaster over SKX
Brilliant, thank you Teddy. I have one of these and it's just great, along with my NY0040 and several Eco-Drives that are just so brilliant as pick up and run watches, Citizen make great watches, but for some reason seem to be over looked in favour of some higher profile brands?
Love the content. Can you review the new Timex Expedition North field watches?
I'm definitely going to look at these and he'll I'll probably grab one some day, but do all diver's HAVE to be 44mm cases? I wish seiko or citizen would make a 40mm diver like the zelos mako v3
Finally bought one Black dial and case. Its not bad but I had to put it on a black Nato strap. Its strange having the winder at 8. I have small wrists but it wears and looks well. I still love my Seiko vintage Turtle (1977 )
I have the Coke NY0085 with a jubilee bracelet from Long Island Watches as my daily beater. With the diameter of nearly 42 mm it has the perfect size for me. I'm good with the mineral crystal, and when i want a sapphire, there's already one in the watchbox to replace the mineral. But i like the the bigger Fugu very much, great dial.
Teddy - what is the second language on the day wheel on these? Kinda bummed that I bought limited edition fully lumed dial fugu NY0138-14X not long ago and then they basically release the same watch (NY0155-58X).

The size is fine Teddy. It's an effing dive watch bro. Citizen/Seiko, customers like large dive watches. Not meant for girls.
In my opinion, Citizen needs to limit the use of 8 series movements to lower end watches, maybe $250 max. They should be putting 9 series movements in these watches. Frankly, if I were running Citizen, I'd completely phase out the 8 series movements and fully invest in the 9 series to increase production and in turn, lower the cost. Sure, the 8 series movements are technically on par with Seiko's 4R movements, but Citizen should over deliver by using the 9 series. There's not the same brand equity for Citizen automatics as for Seiko automatics, so going with a superior movement would help steal sales from Seiko. Also, the size seems too big. I'd expect that Citizen will be adding to it's offerings to better attract those preferring more moderately sized watches. All of that said, it is great to see Citizen returning to automatics in the US.

I have a Citizen Calibre 2100 Chronograph that I have had for years and love (I even had a full refurb on it a couple of years back). I quite liked the look of this watch when I saw it online and was interested in it as a second daily wearer to sit along side my 2100 - but I tried one on a few days ago and it didn't have the weight (it's about 30 grams lighter), solidity or quality feel of my 2100. The bracelet in particular didn't feel as solid and I was particularly disappointed by this. I probably would have bought one of these had it felt similar weight on the wrist, even if they had to up the price to do it (the current re-release of the 2100 is over double the price), but as it stands, i'll probably give this one a miss - it feels a bit cheap.
Are these the new edition? I've seen these watches for a few years now, but I never knew they have sapphire glass. When I looked at Citizen's website, they do bear different ref. number, with a pretty significant price jump also. Way more expensive than the "comparable" Seiko Prospex.

Amazing looking watches. But once again, the size is the deterrent for me.
It doesn't look like they're listening because they had a great watch with the 42mm Fugu, they just needed to slap sapphire on it. Instead they came out with this bigger 44mm version and didn't extend the seconds hand to the chapter ring, instead they left a big gap between it and the chapter ring, unlike the 42mm version which has no gap.
Is the fully lumed black one sold out yet?
