I'm not exactly sure what the problem is here... I'd understand if anything was lost, but there literally wasn't. They rebranded the card, and added two points categories. On the flipside, credit card issuers remove benefits from their cards all the time across the board, but that also didn't happen here. The reality is that the Citi Premier was way better than it should have been, and the Strata Premier will still be great as the low-end option for the future Strata Elite, but they're only able to do those sort of things by not dicking around with legacy products that hold up benefit negotiations.

In my opinion if they weren't changing the name, nobody would care. It's no different than if Amex randomly announced that they were adding an extra bonus category to the Gold and improving travel protections, but keeping the fee the same. I imagine everyone would either be pleasantly surprised with the added benefits, or they wouldn't even notice. I don't think renaming the card changes that, or automatically makes it a separate product to the point that you would expect to be eligible for another bonus.

No question now that they wanted to lock existing Premier holders out of a welcome offer on the Strata Premier. Granted, they're the same card, but automatically doing this to folks without any communication just makes it feel weird to me. Thanks for the updates as always brotha 👊🏼

My Citi Premier account was converted this morning, I ordered a replacement Strata Premier card and should have it soon. Odd that it was a copy and paste of the Citi Premier with some previous additions that were removed on the Premier. The 10X on hotels and car rentals is solid I will see how I feel about this card the longer I hold it.

I’m definitely not a fan of the new card design whatsoever, looks cheap feels cheap and is easily scratched just an all around fail for a $95 AF card compared to the Citi Premier.

I'm a little confused by the reactions, they addressed their biggest weakness, raised the sub, kept the af, and everyone is mad? Amex would have raised the fee, given a $5/wk credit at Hobby Lobby and people would line up. I get bonus hunters being disappointed they can't double dip, but I can't hold it against them that they aren't incentivizing churn, by just changing the name they actually helped by not resetting the time-since-last-bonus timer.

The card changes were great, I have no issue with the changes. All good there. It was the absolute lack of communication from Citi about when things were going to be implemented. That’s where I got pissed.

I absolutely believe that the current holders should be given an email explaining the changes, that was my biggest complaint about the Autograph news blackout during the transfer partner rollout

Hi Dugroz, in your Citi account look for card services than card benefits. Than look for your card if you have multiple. I was able to see their new guide in detail. I also ordered the new designed card.

I'm not a Citi Premier cardholder, but I don't really see why this conversion would be an issue for those who are. Apart from the name and card design change, this seems like a more minor shift than the average Amex refresh. The change from PRG to Gold back in 2018 feels like a good proxy that was generally really well received, and that one involved an increase in AF that isn't present here. It feels like Citi did really fumble the launch from a marketing perspective, but I don't think the change itself is a problem or that this needs to be a new product.

I found the full protections description. I found the same thing for the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey. They both cover a lot. What we need is a travel insurance expert or two to line it all up for us.

As unexpected changes go, this isn’t *bad.* But, it’s worrisome in total

Citi Strata Premier may not be a first round pick, but it jumped up a spot with a 75K welcome bonus. Although we talk endlessly about multipliers and travel protections, they don't matter much. Wells Fargo Autograph Journey 60K welcome bonus is not good enough. It takes a lot of spend to make up that 15K, so Wells Fargo moves to the second round.

Product change to a custom cash then apply for the strata(assuming you haven’t had a bonus within 4 years and if you have it doesn’t apply to you anyway). Idk if I see any issue here, and I think the Wells Fargo situation is a very interesting comparison to basically adding benefits to cards people already had without a credit pull or af increase.

I believe you have to hold the Strata Premier for 1 year before you could product change to a Custom Cash. With the auto product change to Strata Premier most folks are stuck for a year.

The best $95-$150 mid tier travel card earner got even better 💪 Difficult to out earn the Premier with the Journey, CSP or the Green. The real $95-$150 👑 Is their card, not ours. They can even cancel the card if they want.

I was happy they automatically changed my card. Same card with better protections and a name change. It was a refresh not a new card IMO.

Not quite sure this is shady, and I'm not bothered by the change that happened overnight...but I had called Citi on Saturday to discuss another matter and asked the rep about the Strata change. She said, "Did you receive an email or message about this?" I replied, "No, I got nothing, but I've heard through other sources online that this change was happening soon...what can you tell me about it and how will it affect me?" She basically concluded with "I can't speak of anything related to this Strata matter." So, then Sunday I look and things all changed. I'm wondering if I'll get a replacement card automagically...or do I need to actually ask for that? The poor communications from Citi is the bigger issue for me.

Hey Matt,...just got off another call with the Citi reps about this Strata card. I asked if I could request a new Strata version of this card and was told, "At this time there is no option for me to do that for you." then the rep said, "All the new protections and features of the Strata card have been applied to your existing account." To which I said, "yeah yeah...I want the new card - when can I expect to get a new one...?" Rep said, "When your current card expires..." hahahaaaha So, 2027 for me, and by that time, Citi will have done something else to this card, I'm sure.

My wife’s Premier was also automatically product changed to the Strata Premier. We do like the Citi Trifecta setup, but that was very shady of Citi to do.

I think you're looking at this as a new product instead of a rebranding (which it basically is). They clearly did this so people with the card wouldn't get another SUB since its the same card. Im not really understanding the upset...if AMEX rebranded the green card, would you expect them to let you reapply to get the SUB again? When the premier came out, it was never supposed to be the prestige, which is why they didn't convert it. This, however, is literally the same card rebranded.

This evening I product changed my Citi Strata Premier card to a Citi Custom Cash. I have other travel cards and $95 for 3x on categories I already get on other travel cards seemed like a waste of a $95 AF. I kept the Citi Premier because I always wanted it since joining Citi but after the lazy ass cheap card design of the Strata Premier I felt cheated for a $95 AF card. A solid 5% card will be nice, I thought about getting the Double Cash again but I already have a few 2% cards.

The card reprint I have no issue with. It's upgrading people without their knowledge, that's a slippery slope. See Fargo, Wells.

I suspect that their forced upgrade was threefold 1. Lock out any potential extra SUB they would have to pay 2. Look better for the shareholders in “wow look at the “sign up” rate for our new card” 3. Only have one team dedicated to the strata and not need to leave staff managing the old Premier accounts

The card doesn't exist anymore. It's not like an OG Freeddom. The old cards got upgraded. If they allow people to pc and get the new sub, it's LITERALLY the same thing as saying "hey this will happen soon". I just don't see the big deal UNLESS they don't show the situation i said with the PC and new sub

Honestly considering the card. I don't have any citi cards, but without AA as a transfer partner, and a obly whyndam and choice as a hotel chain as well as not knowing enough about bouncing hotel points through partner ships. Its hard to choose this card over say an aspire or AA business advantage. I need to start building out some airline miles for future trip

Recorded the day the card was silently put out with no official communication from Citi as to what they were doing.

Sounds like they're locking existing Premier cardmembers out from a Strata Premier bonus, but even if so Citi could just reflect it in their bonus eligibility language. Could also be that they don't want to maintain separate systems and employee resources for the old Premier and Strata Premier. Anyway, I agree that just converting everyone without prior notice isn't great. What is great is your update here so thanks!

I think most people here would likely burn at least $100 worth of points to book a $500 hotel stay, right? Okay so I'll book the $500 today using $100 worth of points. Now it's a $400 stay. And Strata Premier gives you $100 back as soon as you click "Book " Now it's $300. And you're going to get 10X c/o Strata. So it's $270 Net out-of-pocket ... on a $500 hotel booking. I say .. Forget status, I've got STRATA. Imagine being able to do that four times per year....book $500 for $270... and only burn $100 worth of points. That would be better than the new Hilton Surpass gives me. Strata just does it once per year. I'll take it.

100 200 300 dollars per year is well worth it to guarantee I don't eat the cost of two round trip global tickets. The very best travel protections are well worth it. Easy starting point: How much is the very best travel insurance that would cover everything? Use that when you book travel with a card that has no protections. How does that compare to something like the Sapphire Reserve? Break down the algebra.

a) Yes, they should have said something, b) I think this is blown way out of proportion (everyone got a better card for free, c) product changing a card without getting new fees associated with the new card is not something you are telling your stockholders (that's not what this is), d) new cards with new fees will be what you tell stockholders.

I think Wells missed an opportunity to crush this card. The overlapping and weurd categories on the journey doesn't make as much sense as this. You could realistically use this card for everything because the main categories are all present. Worst case u just add a double cash. I'm not interested in Citi. Too many horror stories

You’re not wrong. I do think for travelers the 5x hotels and 4x airlines without a portal or most favored airline is a great return but yeah they missed out on really knocking out Strata/Premier. I’d take both over the Sapphire Preferred. But my Active Cash/Autograph pair does quite well. And I have a CSR for travel protections.

Citi is a joke. I can’t believe so many people recently applied for the card just because of the elevated offer. People being that desperate for points is hilarious to me. I would easily choose Wells Fargo for cards over Citi. Only thing worth seeing is how the Strata Elite compares to the Journey Beyond.

No one owns a Premier card now. Whether they like it or not.

Legally speaking you are wrong. As long as annual fee remains the same, and there is no cost to the consumer, no issues legally or optically from my view. Happens all the time in banking and finance. Nothing was lost by consumer. Only gains. Not sure why you are senstive about what I would cconsider to be "complimentary upgrades" to the card.

From your video, it sounds like your issue is that you wanted the cardholders to have the right to say yes or no to completely complimentary upgrades to a card. That is not custom and practice. And that's not how I see it. I'm fine with the free upgrades just being automatically applied with minimum and short notice. I don't need to agree and approve those upgrades before they take hold. And I am fine with their minimalist announcement. We all knew this change was coming over a year ago.

I just happen to think product changes shouldn’t just happen in the dead of night. I also don’t think it was okay to not communicate anything because it was only positives. It seems I’m in the minority of this sentiment, which feels wrong to me. But it is what it is. This was pure emotion, and I have since moved past it since hey, it’s just Citi. I get issuers can do this and we freely sign up for it. But it didn’t sit right. Seems to sit right for plenty of people and they’re entitled to that sentiment. Is what it is.

So I was smart when I downgraded my Premier to Double Cash last summer 🏝️😎🎉🎉

No Citi Strata Premier sub for me until Summer 2025.

Yawn. The Citi ecosystem is pretty lame anyway. Their credit cards are only slightly more exciting than their Savings Accounts which pay 0.03% APY

It’s an alright ecosystem. And they have decent airline partners. But fair

You're being a drama queen. My premier got upgraded and nothimg was lost only gained. I'm not a churned and I don't care they did this.
