    When did citadel produce some of "the best on the market"? Consistently all the citadel brushes I've owned were utter rubbish in comparison to W&N

    Same problem, bought some small layer brushes and I kid you not after the first time I dipped (yes dipped) them in water the bristles just split. The coat of glue or whatever it is they use when they ship them made the brush look fine or "small" but it is really a disappointing purchase, especially when their delivery (at least in the UK) is fast af (most of the time).

    I was going to leave a similar comment. Main point that I nearly missed.. is that the Citadel 'artificer' brushes are a completely different affair to the standard rubbish synthetic brushes they sell. That could / should have been much better articulated in this video to avoid the confusion - including the title frankly - because a standard issue Citadel brush is noit even the same league as W&N S7. A bit of extra googling reveals it likely / possible that the citadel artificers are actually W&N outsourced anyway, possibly to the same spec as series 7.

    Series 7 and Kolisnky red sable in general are designed for primarily watercolor uses, they hold a surprising amount of liquid, have great snap and the well built ones can last you for YEARS, making em perfect for glazing and working with thinner paints. that said you need to take care of them (like any other brush really) or they will start splitting on you, keep paint out of the ferrule and give em a good wash once in a while.

    Thanks for the video. I bought my W&N 7 over 2 years ago, all are holding up with care. Good to know that GW is most likely sourcing the new series brushes from W&N. I guess my decision will now come down to price. I own W&N size 0,1,2,3,4. The 1 has held up the best by far and is what I use for all detailing.

    The spikey bits facebook group never seems to pop these videos up for me. I love watching em and I'm always on the forum but FB never seems to pop these up on my feed. Does anyone else have this problem? Brushes are weird, I always end up getting say three and without realising it I will alays gravitate towards using one. I find the citadel ones seem to develop kinks or splits pretty quickly, and I honestly never leave them in the water or forget to rinse em. I tend to get brushes from my local arts and crafts store as they are about half the price and last longer. Just my opinion tho. Thanks for the vid by the way.

    I bought a Windsor Newton 00, 1, and 2, but I got the miniature version accidentally, so the bristles are shorter, and I feel I can only use them for details. 😭 Wanted a more all round set, so maybe I’ll just use my bomb wicks for base coating or something.

    They have 2 types of bristle per size of brush. 1 is the round brush, which is the shorter bristles and the other 1 is called the point brush and has the longer bristles. This works throughout the WN 7 range. Hope this helps if you order from on line

    Citadel Brushes are a bit more flimsy (although my small layer has lasted me over a year, can't say the same for my medium base, but that brush puts in work.) But can be argued as worth it because they are as of right now half the price of WN Brushes, 4.95 For S Layer on GW Website vs 12.45 For Series 7 Size 0 on Amazon. And WN Size 0 is never in stock on the WN website whereas GW's Brushes almost always are.

  • @cartouchator
    @cartouchator4 жыл бұрын

    I would get neither of those, they are just too expensive (and imo the layer brushes are too big). I went for army painter brushes for fine detail brushes (basecoating brush but using it as fine base coat brush, precise detail brush for eyes and buttons, highlighting brush for edge highlights, and army painter dry brush for dry brushing). I then use a size 1 or 2 fake WN copy sable brush I bought from eBay UK for £1.15 (1.25usd) for larger basecoating and precise shading, and a size 4 sable brush from same company for larger shading. So far haven't found anything citadel brush wise that made me want to stop using those. As for brush soap, I actually use Dove soap bars (the hand moisturising ones), they cost £0.50 (75 us cents) each and other than the added fragrance have the same components in them. The army painter brushes might be synthetic but I found I prefer synthetic over sable for the very very small brushes, and prefer sable for larger brushes.

    I bought two W&N series 7 brushes (size 0 and 1) from Amazon and and turned to shit after a month and a half. A lot of reviewers voiced their dissatisfaction as well. It's also possible that I purchased fake or factory reject brushes.

    Raphael Kolinsky 8404s work well for me. They last for YEARS. Winsor & Newton are equally good. Treat them right, they'll also last. Never had a Citadel brush that last very long at all. These might be different, but Raphael and Winsor Newton are used by comic book inkers because of their ability to keep a nice point, while holding a lot of ink. They do the same for water colors and acrylics, and I'd swear by them. They might cost a little, but you get that back in quality.

    Windsor and newton are certainly better than citadel, citadel are generally awful at keeping a point and are a little too bendy. However after using W&N i have switched to escoda brushes and they are in my opinion far better, they have a finer point and maintain it for a very long time with minimal maintenance are less than half the price of W&N.

    They are NOT hairs from the butt. That's BS. Animals don't have specific butt hair, the hairs around their anus is the exact same as their body. A friend of mine that works at an art store went to a factory with their work and got to see the production. What company they went to they were not allowed to say...but yeah, it's EAR hairs. The area inside the ear is where you find the finest hairs.
