Did this in the 80s to Pompeii from Sorrento, easily one of the most terrifying train rides of my life. We were going so fast downhill through the mountain the whole family started to exchange worried glances. Did it again in 2012 and clearly speed restrictions are now in place as it was no where near as fast. A great train ride. Love it.

Wow this video has brought back some wonderful memories of travelling on the Circumvesuviana on our family holiday to Sorrento in 2015. We live in Wales and are used to beautiful scenery, but the journeys from Sorrento to Pompei, Herculaneum and Naples were so memorable due to the amazing views from the train. Thanks for posting this video, which I put on the background whilst i'm doing something 'boring', this video adds a pleasing element. If you get the chance to go.....you must Italy is an amazing country and the Italians are so welcoming.

Bellissimo. Used this from Piano di Sorrento to Naples and Torre Del Greco a decade later. What confused me most, is the left-handed traffic on the line and the location of P. Garibaldi and Porta Nolana: they were almost impossible to find for me :)

Beautiful, thank you for filming and posting. I was on the train about two weeks ago once more, and this reminds me what a great technical achievement the creation of the line was. Aren't the names like poetry, even if the views are sometimes a little rough? I hope to deliver a short illustrated talk to a society of Italophiles soon, and I will be sure to reference this video. If you can advise me of any specialist reading matter in the railway's history I would be delighted. Grazie!

We thought the train finished at Piazza Garibaldi due to misunderstanding the on train announcement so prepared to hop off. I couldn't get the camera back in position for the last segment - besides it was too dark to get a decent video. GoPro Hero 2 cameras need good light.

Is this track width smaller than north america? Can NA trains fit on these tracks?
@MatthewGeier
3 жыл бұрын
The Circumvesuviana is 950 mm gauge, not 1435mm standard gauge like NA or even most of the rest of Italy. Not that a NA train would fit on pretty well any track in Europe. The rails may be the same distance apart, but North American trains have wider and higher bodies than typical European trains, so while a NA locomotive could run on Italy's standard gauge tracks, it would tend to hit things alongside the tracks.

It would be cool if this line was standard gauge and inter regional and intercity trains visited Sorrento. Even high speed trains. Sarebbe bello se questa linea fosse a scala piena e gli inter regionali e intercity arrivassero fino a Sorrento. Anche gli alta velocità
