    Did this in the 80s to Pompeii from Sorrento, easily one of the most terrifying train rides of my life. We were going so fast downhill through the mountain the whole family started to exchange worried glances. Did it again in 2012 and clearly speed restrictions are now in place as it was no where near as fast. A great train ride. Love it.

    I experienced this tram, when it was regular in East Berlin, usually combined with two additional cars.

  • @MatthewGeier
    @MatthewGeier Жыл бұрын

    The Sydney tramway museum also acquired motor 3007 and trailer 269107, however it never proved practical to run the trailer at Loftus as the museum does not have loops. A procedure was written to 'top and tail' the trailer with the motor cars and swap which motor hauled at each end of the line, but it proved to be cumbersome and never implemented in practice. 3007 spent a few years in Melbourne and trailer 269107 was eventually sold and forms part of a cafe in Western Sydney now. Both motors cars are now at Loftus. 3007 currently doesn't have a pantograph and will be restored to operation with it's pantograph when the museum overhead is fully compatible. 5133 has been modified to use a trolley pole collector as at the time it arrived the museum overhead was firmly trolley pole only. This is changing and 5133 may get it's pantograph back in time. The cars were painted in different Berlin eras, so have fleet numbers that match the era of the paint job.

    We acquired two TZ69s, and one BZ69. The trailer is now a cafe , at the Irish pub O’Donoghues at Emu Plains. It's visible on Google Street View. The trailer was never usable at Loftus as we don't have loops or 'run-around' sidings.

    Looks nice, but really stupid. Let's invent and invest massively expensive battery system so we can avoid putting pup few wires on few miles of track... Talk about waste. When nicely done, wires don't look that bad. Not enough to justify all the extra costs in my opinion...

  • @MatthewGeier
    @MatthewGeier Жыл бұрын

    There is a strong, and IMHO irrational, fear of overhead wires. The new tramway in my home city only got approval from the city municipal council on the condition that it be 'wire free'. They threatened to fight the project by any means available to them if not. Rather ironically, the Town Hall is the end of the wires so has a complex set of overhead termination poles and stay wires right out front. 'wire free' trams are spreading - because despite the extra cost, it's easier than fighting the 'no unsightly overhead wires' people and the vendors are more than happy to do the upsell.

    The camera wasn't on the outside of the car, it was stuck to the inside of the driver's window using a suction-cup mount. Occasionally you see the dirt on the window and reflections of the inside of the car.

    The various streetcar systems in Portugal are just delightful. While many European streetcars have been modernized, these heritage lines (as we call them here in the States) are not only beautiful, but they have a great deal of character. What a charming ride! I'll have to check this out when I visit Sintra.

    In the future, will there be a Variotram tour, like 2107 making its return to the light rail lines after 7 years? Also, it would be a great option for 2107 to visit the Eastern Suburbs (L2 and L3) or Parramatta Light Rail after its opening in 2023. But the trickiest part is to test on the newer lines rather than the Inner West, and also, it needs to be road hauled from the Tramway Museum to the city.

  • @MatthewGeier
    @MatthewGeier2 жыл бұрын

    Not going to happen. Ignoring the cost of moving it to the city (would not be surprised if the quote came in at $100k+ for the return trip!), the Vario is too wide for the eastern lines. It MAY be able to just scrape past the platforms at low speed, but the mirrors would definitely have to be removed. And of course to go further north than Town Hall requires Alstom's proprietary APS power pickup system. Not impossible to do, but way better things to spend $100k on I think.

    They’re far better quality than the Urbos family. CAF getting a tram monopoly all over NSW was a mistake, at least only the L1 was affected majorly. I heard about an order for 4 more Urbos 3s, has it been cancelled?

  • @reginalddeleon3801
    @reginalddeleon38012 жыл бұрын

    There hasn’t been any news of the new 4 as of lately, other then their first announcement last year. A cancellation of the order isn’t an unheard of decision outside either, but with the lack of updates I would-yet at the same time wouldn’t-be surprised if they don’t cancel the order at all, especially with controversy gained and the Government’s commitment to build the new bus fleet locally.

  • @MatthewGeier
    @MatthewGeier2 жыл бұрын

    Newcastle getting CAF was creative accounting, they were an option on the Sydney order, so full tendering wasn't required. I suspect the 4 extras for L1 will also be 'options'. I wonder what 'options' are attached to the Citadis 305 order ?. Also at this point if the government cancels the CAF order for 4 more and switches to options on more Alstom 305s, CAF may have grounds to sue. CAF would have to do something silly like withhold delivery until they get a settlement and paid for fixing the current fleet to get their order cancelled. I personally think we WILL get the 4 more CAF cars and WE will be paying for the repairs to the existing 12. But that will all be settled quietly out of court and will be all 'commercial in confidence' so we will never know the true cost.

  • @TheSearleFamily123
    @TheSearleFamily1232 жыл бұрын

    @@MatthewGeier I think what the government should've done was cancel the order for 4 more Urbos 100s placed in July 2021, and replaced both that order and the existing 12 Urbos 3s with 16 5-module Bombardier Flexity 2s (the Flexity 2 is also used in Gold Coast [7 modules] and Blackpool, Lancashire🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧 [600V DC supply] and will be used for the future Melbourne G-class tram [3 modules, 600V DC supply]) built in Dandenong, Melbourne by Alstom (Bombardier merged with Alstom on 29/1/2021, and before then the Dandenong manufacturing plant used to belong to Bombardier).
