Thank you. This was a really interesting video to watch - it really shows what is involved in knitting a sock on a sock knitting machine, and that it's more involved than just cranking the handle.

That machine works beautifully. They really don't make things like how they used to.

In general, I would agree, however these particular machines are being made today using MUCH better materials and they've even improved the design a little as well - erlbacherknitting.com/

Hi Joe! Thanks so much for sharing. I recently got my CSM and am on a learning curve. The parking of the ribber needles is genius! Thanks so much, I shall try it on my next sock. 🧦 🧶

Parking ribber needles is genius. Not my genius but genius nonetheless the less. Unparking is a bit more difficult than parking them. You need to make sure the yarn in the ribber needles is in front of the latch.

Beautiful work! I especially enjoyed that you could keep the ribbing while accessing the heel by parking the ribber needles. Brilliant, that! So, from start to finish a pair takes about …say... three hours, including blocking on a sock form? -- not waiting for it to dry, however

Thanks Argon. Parking ribber needles was not my idea, and I’m not sure you can do that with all the brands of circular sock knitting machines. But it was really a game-changer for me. I have made heels in the past with the ribber-plate in place, but the success rate was much lower. And I’d say on average, if my machine is cooperating, each pair of socks takes me about 2 hours…I will only steam-block my socks with a steam iron if I block them at all.

My antique Gearhart machine came a ribber that doesn’t let me rib down the foot. The needles keep catching onto the ribber every time it passes to do the heel. Is that why you park your needles to do the heel?

Yes...parking the needles was something I learned from an expert cranker. It both allows me to continue the ribbing down the top of the sock, but also I can take off the ribber plate while I turn the heel and see what I'm doing and pick up dropped stitches more easily.

So your machine looks like you are using both old and new parts. Does erlbacher make replacement parts for early gearhart machines?

The only parts that aren't original to the 1925 machine are the yarn feeder, the weight buckle and the fork-weights (for heels and toes) and some of the needles. Erlbacher Gearhart definitely makes a lot of great replacement parts. Others I got from Etsy. - erlbacherknitting.com/category/accessories/
