    Thank you! I definitely had some great folks to travel with. I normally travel in a group of 3 to 4 but have had alot of others interested in going. I put the notice out before this trip that I would take a few extras and that there would be no 50" trails. In 2 days I had 17 people wanting to go. The number dropped to 14 total before leaving and it ended up being a great group of folks!

I do different types of trips, like 1 year I'll load up the duffel bags and strap them to the atv and stay in different motels, B&Bs etc. Sometimes we'll take the travel trailer and just base out of one location for a week or so and then there's my favorite way of all. Load up the atv and trailer and set out for 8-10 days before loading up and heading back home. This year made the 3rd year in a row that we went Idaho. This trip in particular was great and we enjoyed it very much! The scenery out there is absolutely beautiful!

    Thank you Brian! We went the second week of July. Idaho is a tricky place to plan a long trip like this, atleast for those like myself, driving 2200 miles to get out there. Too early and your dealing with snow drifts and possibly closed routes and too late you're dealing with fire season. We have to commit because of time to get out there, and length of trip. Its hard for us to hit it just right.

    Hey Ezra! We did this trip the first and second week of July. You have to watch getting to Pinion Peak too early as it will most likely still be blocked by snow as evident at 28:49 of the video. It's frowned upon if you try to navigate around it like we did. We were extremely careful but not everyone is which is why they don't like for you to do it. I found out after the fact. August is definitely a safer bet but then you are in wildfire season and it's a crap shoot whether or not something will be closed due to fire.

    There is some narrow stretches that would be tough for a jeep but there are alternate routes nearby. You would also have to go late in the year to make sure the snow drift was completely gone up around Pinion Peak and the only problem with that is it puts you out there during wildfire season.

  • @atvtrailscouts4765

    @atvtrailscouts4765

    3 жыл бұрын

    There are so many variables its hard to tell. If you camp out every night it won't cost you much at all. If you stay out of the restaurants as you pass through the towns you'll save even more. For me, part of the fun is experiencing all of it so we stay in motels or B&Bs every other night or two and eat at the little mom and pop places when possible. If you don't buy souvenirs it will also save alot of money. Where you have to drive from determines how much the trip will cost too. I have to buy approximately 370 gallons of diesel just to get there and back and then gas for 2 machines. It cost us a pretty penny emery time we go but to me its worth every cent. As far as gas goes, there are gas stations along this route. Hope this helps a little.

    Hey Mike, the weight is usually right around 650lbs, depending on how much water and fuel i'm hauling. That of course depends on how far we have to travel between towns that we can restock in. If I could give you a tip, resist the urge to take everything and the kitchen sink with you. If you have the room, it doesn't necessarily mean you should use it all. I try to pack as light as I can and take compact camping gear.As far as the belt goes, I run a Gates Carbon Fiber and it has around 2300 miles on it so far, and about 95% of that is pulling a trailer. I'm curious as to a pack list of what items you find necessary to take on a trip like this.

  • @atvtrailscouts4765

    @atvtrailscouts4765

    Hey Michael, I will try to do a more detailed video of this in the future, but for now, I make sure I have planned my food stops and make sure there is enough for 4-5 days extra. I mostly rely on the dehydrated packs for this. They are light weight and easy to pack. Water, water, water! A filtration device helps if you are unable to resupply at a store. Plan for the unplanned when it comes to fuel. I figure my stops and distance and generally add 20% for unforeseen detours. Pack parts if riding. I carry spare tierods, sensors, etc. Hopefully, if there is a failure, I can get her back up and running. I do all of the work myself on my machine and like to think I have a chance of a successful trailside repair if necessary. I also bring plenty of tools. In the case of larger parties like the one on this trip, we put the list out and different people bring different things from the list. That way we're not all carrying a ton of weight in tools on each machine. A reliable GPS is a must (for me anyway). I follow a predetermined route on the screen so that I don't spend all of my time consulting paper maps. I also bring a backup. In a case that we find private property or for some reason the route is blocked or closed, paper maps do however, help with figuring out a detour, so bring them if possible. I bring a satellite phone and have some sort of plan in place for emergencies. My wife and I have done these alone in the past and brought good hiking boots and a backpack incase the wheeler quits and we had to walk out. Most times we travel with others so that shouldn't be an issue. Flashlights, fire starter, camera, sd cards, etc are other must haves! Do a local trip to where you live and spend a night or two out. That will let you fine tune the list of items that you require. Happy Trails!

    Yes sir! Me and a friend made all but the one that said "Happy Campers" on it. Keith built his out of his shop right before the trip. I've been fooling around with those for about 8 years now. The one I'm pulling has over 3000 miles on it. There's not enough room on my machine for both mine and my wife's stuff for a multi day adventure so the trailer was the solution. It's just got more and more complex over the years. I started with the one Jeremy's pulling, moved to the one James had and then added the tent, awning, lights etc as I did these trips and realized the benefits to having all of the extras. They make fun of me now and say I go "glamping". 😁 The trailer Ethan was pulling is a compact one man rig that we were basically beating on a little just to see how it held up.

    Is it doable by Jeep?

  • @atvtrailscouts4765

    @atvtrailscouts4765

    3 жыл бұрын

    Absolutely! Since I ride an atv, I like to hit the 50" trail in the area but since we were in the same area the year before and hit alot of it then, we decided to stick to Forest Service roads and Jeep trails so that the others on the wider side by sides could join in. The only thing you would've had a very hard time with would be getting around the snow drift. If you knew about it before you drove up, you could very easily run Hwy 12 out of Stanley to Sunbeam and jump back on the Custer Motorway there.

    You'll need atleast 8 days if you're doing the same route because there really isn't any way to shorten this one. Plan for alot of seat time(in front of the computer)planning route, points of interests, fuel stops, food stops and layovers in motels. These trips take me a long time to plan but they generally run pretty smooth once we set out. Once you get out there, take plenty of pics and video. Its worth all of the planning hours once you make it out there.

Everyone is being pulled in different directions right now. What do you ride and what kind of set up do you have? Not that you need a certain type. Shoot, you could throw a tent on a dirt bike and be ready to go. Just curious what you use.
