Best Davinci tutorial where you not a total beginner to the platform and not an expert. So thankful for your help

I feel like that’s the sweet spot for tutorials tbh. Sometimes when I’m doing Premiere stuff it can be difficult to remember all of the struggles that a beginner faces since it’s been so long, so having taken on a new software and then teaching it has been an enjoyable experience.
Hi! We switched to DaVinci in our agency. A really good one to learn color grading from is Darren Mostyn (pro colorist). What we've learned is that you have to convert to rec 709 on your last node. That way you are truly working with the file's dynamic range, and not a converted version of it. Give it a go 🙂

I’ve gradually been doing more and more in it. Don’t know if I’d fully switch but ideally it would be nice to get fully proficient in all aspects of Premeire and DaVinci over time
Thank you for this 🙌 if you need quick turnarounds after games would you recommend not shooting in log or can you still achieve quick turnarounds while shooting in log and colour grading?
THANK YOU!!

please share that video with us, it's a good way to practice for those of us who don't have footage of that quality.
thank you sir
Do you have another tutorial explaining what the heck LUTs are and why you use them? None of the other tutorials have mentioned these at all and I'm not sure which one to choose.
Your filming setup is sweet

I will be studying this for sure. Switching over from FCPX. Going to be snagging the LUT pack as well. Coming over from the real estate video world and shooting a lot of my sons 7th grade travel football team this winter. Been doing a deep dive on your page and I have learned A LOT!! so thank you. One question real quick. Are you making sure to shoot over exposed when shooting Slog 3? Its a big deal when shooting inside for houses but wondering if its still a must shooting sports?

Thank you for this!!! Any suggestions on how to embrace noise or grain in a video? I noticed in a recent edit I kind of like the way the texture of the video looks when it has some noise in it, but want to use it with more of a purpose from here on out.
@petersarellas

In general I'd say the best way is to shoot your footage clean and then add back noise and grain with effects so that you can control how much and what type of noise and grain you're adding in. If you're referring to working with noise and grain already in a shot, I often like crushing the blacks on any really noisy shots that I get to control it a bit more or adding extra film and "vintage" overlays to play into the noisy look

Thank you so much for the advice. Helps a ton! Typically it’s working with grain or noise already in a shot. Trying to get better at shooting clean in low light.

Always a mini heart attack when I have to ask myself that question 😂
Which picture profile did you used to choose back when you were shooting with the Sony A7III ? Since it’s 8 bits I guess it wasn’t s-log 3, but maybe s-log 2 or HLG 3? Very helpful video 🙏🏼

@@petersarellas awesome thanks 🙏🏼 And does HLG 3 need conversion LUT to rec709 when colorgrading ? Or just small color adjustments ? After hours of tutorials you finally confirmed my thoughts on this question, and you motivate me to go deeper into DaVinci for my colorgrading. Your work is an huge inspiration, thank you sm🤌🏼🫶🏼
Hi Peter. Thanks for this helpful content. Question : which log profile are you using ? Pp8 pp9? And what are your profile parameters details?

@@petersarellas thanks very much peter for your feedback. Last question : which sony rec709 lut are you using for conversion ? I found 4 luts on sony website: 4_SGamut3CineSLog3_To_Cine+709.cube 3_SGamut3CineSLog3_To_SLog2-709.cube 2_SGamut3CineSLog3_To_LC-709TypeA.cube 1_SGamut3CineSLog3_To_LC-709.cube Do you know in which case we can use the ...Cine+709.cube ?
How do you get to edit so smooth do you use proxies? Studio version?
@petersarellas
5 ай бұрын
In premiere pro when I’m working with a lot of footage or large files I’ll use proxies but here I’m not using any. This is the studio version of Reaolve and I’m also editing on a fairly powerful desktop which all helps.
yes to the night time grade video please!

How do you know what you’re shooting in! This is where I get stuck. I’m using a Sony A7 IV and I’m just sticking with whatever colour the camera throws out because I have no clue what conversion luts apply to my camera

There is an option to select different picture profiles within your camera. This function can be set to whichever custom key you’d like so I unfortunately can’t give you a specific button to press to get to it but once you get to a menu with lots of “PP#” options that’s it. You can from there choose picture profiles that are more saturated and require less work to colour, or some that are more desaturated and give you more dynamic range. Additionally, you can click into any PP to customize it to your liking. Regardless of what you choose you’ll likely want to do at least a bit of colour correction in post. I hope that helps.
So when I'm color grading and adding a layer, I change the saturation of a skin tone for example, but then when I hit shift+h to get back to the full color of the node, I'm not seeing the change. Why would this be? When I go back to the first grade node, it doesn't look like the changes i made in my layer mode have changed at all. HELP please lol newbie to colorgrading and shooting talking head on an iphone 14 promax Thanks in advance!

So how is your workflow as far as color grading in Davinci and editing in Premiere?
@petersarellas
8 ай бұрын
Export an xml from premiere, import it into davinci and relink media as needed. Then colour grade, export xml from davinci for premiere and import that xml into premiere. Lots of content out there on this already though it could justify its own video.
More night time color grading.
The foam that comes with rode videomic ntg... There is a reason it exists, use it. Otherwise plosives will ruin your audio like here.
