I can’t even with her mother right now, she really thinks her daughter is to spend her entire being subservient to her family and everyone else’s wishes but her own. How could she humiliate her like that and then turn around and ask her daughter to go through with the party to save face for her. Jialing is no better. He lives in some other reality if he thought Mai would be happy with a surprise engagement. Even if he believed she said yes, he never once discussed it with her, or their future, or any of the problems they’ve had. Even after 3 years of dating he doesn’t know her at all.

Jialing was manipulated by his father and sister - told him she agreed to it - might have been worthwhile to check with her beforehand in hindsight - I feel sorry for him, because he genuinely loves her - he only has his family to blame 100% for his heartbreak - I just hope he doesn't do anything stupid - because they've put so much pressure on him

@@annetterawlings4549 I understand what you mean, but to be honest not all of the problems they had in their relationship was only because of his family’s treatment of her. Jialing runs away from his problems or ignores them until it goes away or someone else solves them for him. It’s like his sister said he’s the heir because he’s the only son, not because he has any great ambition, or capability. Chenghuan is too ambitious and hard working for him. That’s part of why the father now wants her as a daughter in law to help prop his son up. Jialing may in his heart wish well of everything but if you have no ability to address issues and try to find real solutions to solve them, then how do you build a happy life together? He’s willing to go wherever he’s lead without any real work on his part.

I can't even begin to understand what an adult in that culture goes through🙄 Sad mom is not grateful to have such a loving and compassionate daughter!

Wauw, finally an asian drama where the adult acts like an adult and says the truth to parents. Amazing. It shows that even dramas are not willing to feed the public the ancient cruel and harsh patriarchale culture anymore.

👏AGREED! it's gonna be a heavy-duty struggle im sure to continue to reconfigure the mindset of people who in their role as elders, parents, families and communities even name their children names meant to enslave them body and mind to some pretty archaic stuff.

Another parent selling her daughter for prestige, prominence, money and to impress family and complete strangers. This is the kind of mother who will blame her daughter for the SIL's shortcomings no matter what he does because she wants the favor of his parents. The daughter was so on point telling her mother that the mother wants to live vicariously through her because she failed to do it when she was younger. That's why she got slapped so hard. Sometimes, the truth hurts.

I love how Chenghuan realizes the problems in their relationship weren’t just from his family, but also from the fact that Jialing has serious avoidance issues. He never wants to handle things or come up with a solution. Every problem that arises he plays stupid or buries his head in the sand and ignores it until it miraculously gets resolved.

Honestly, her mother is unbearable, at first I wanted to understand or justify her, but there are things that are simply unjustifiable. We certainly owe respect to our parents, But that doesn't mean they can treat us like rag dolls and manipulate us as they please.

Because that’s what the ex does. He either runs away and ignores the problem, or acts dumb until it blows over. The fact that he was trying to say that his sister said she said yes, when he knows his sister had ulterior motives for pushing this marriage as quickly as possible shows that in the end he believes the ends justify the means too. But just pretends to be confused by everything that doesn’t immediately go his way.

I’m conflicted about her mother- I know the mother clearly wants her daughter to have a good life, but her problem is she only seesONE narrow definition o f what a “good life” actually is! And she’s so focused on attaining that for her daughter that she hasn’t stopped to actually ask/consider what her daughter ACTUALLY wants for herself. And I suspect she’s so used to sacrificing her own needs and life to her family that she doesn’t realize that her own daughter would feel bad about her mother and family being looked down on as well! The AFL doesn’t want to see her family belittled for their lack of money! And in addition she doesn’t respect her daughters opinion about the boyfriend not being compatible with the FL anyway- whether he’s rich or not isn’t the point- they just aren’t a suitable match in terms of personality etc

Before, I was really trying to understand Huan Huan's mother's side, that everything she did, even in a wrong and even toxic way, was for the good of her daughter and that she was afraid that she would end up like her. If it wasn’t for the main leads I would’ve dropped this drama. The mom is one of the worst. She’s so annoying. And as lovely as the father and brother are. They don’t help the main girl with shutting up the mom enough. Like everyone just lets the mom run rampant and do what she wants it’s crazy! Like the mom isn’t evil but that almost makes her the worst cuz at least if she was evil we’re supposed to hate you.

I personally believe a few spankings (like a small child needs) would have cured the mother a long time ago. Like FL said, because she indulged her mother when she made small mistakes, thats why she had the mind to do something as big as this. If they had spanked her around ep 7 or so, it wouldnt have gotten this bad. Its because the FL saw the dynamics between her parents that she was even comfortable dating a spineless man like SML. Cause if her dad had more if a backbone, he could have reasoned better with his wife.

La madre es insoportable igual estamos acostumbrados a ver esa clase de madre en dramas,me gustó que no se callara pero me revienta que muestren carácter en algunas cosas y en otras no,amo a Xu Kai pero ella debería de hablar lo justo y necesario con el después de usarla,si el papel es de una mujer fuerte,segura y no perdona engaños ni mentiras entonces debe ser así no solo en algunas escenas porque ella todavía no está enamorada o atraída por él como para bajar la guardia, pero bueno, por eso es que me aburren últimamente los dramas no coinciden y me cansa .

The title is misleading because he wasn’t a scumbag or terrible. He just was bad at reading the room and signs. He loved her and. Was trying to stand up to his family. Honestly her mom is the biggest villain. She is greedy, money hungry and more than willing to sell her daughter off so she can mooch off of her. Her ex boyfriend lied that he was rich, when she found out she forgave him, his family, well his sister was absolutely vile to her repeatedly, his mother didn’t believe he should marry her because they werent compatible because she is from a working class family!, it is only that she saved his father and that he really likes her alot that the ex ( she broke up with him when they were supposed to get engaged) keeps chasing her because the father likes her so much and told both him and his spoilt sister off, so he approves of her which means the sister backed off, probably the mum, so he is all guns blazing trying to get engaged and marry her, she doesnt want to be with him, hes weak, hes flaky, he didnt stand up for her. She is strong, intelligent, independent, beautiful and apart from her crazy ass of a mother she has a great family. Her mother behaved appallingly here knowing they had broken up, knowing how the ex and his family had treated her and them ( her family), she went ahead in cohoots with the ex and tried to organise a surprise engagement!!. My heart broke for her watching this scene😢
