3:39 THANK YOU!!! I have thought this for a long time about Cinderella and I don't get why people dislike the animated portrayal. Here is a girl stuck one of the worst possible situations and rather than either let it embitter her or sit back and do nothing (as is what supposedly happens), she not only works hard but has a loving, sweet attitude about it.

You people are fucked up, misinterpreting morals like that. How the fuck did you get "sit around and do nothing" from "have courage and be kind"? What the fuck are the similarities? You can sit around and do nothing regardless whether you're a good and courageous person or not, as evidence by the stepfamily.

Feminism is about equality. That means female characters should feel, hurt, and be hurt just like the male ones. How is that so difficult for filmmakers to grasp?

Phabel Greene it's a lot easier to just pander. Look at the old action films like Rambo or Top Gun where the heroes always seem perfect and never seem to loose. If the goal is the Bear minimum then that's all people will achieve. Especially if a filmmaker is either misguided in what makes a good story is and grew up on pandering or treats filmmaking as a job to make money to feed their self and/or their families.

John Martin Well put! Thank you for that. That is the problem with a lot of movies now. Something else to consider though is that men and women have different desires (most of the time), so making male and female heroes experience different things, in my opinion, isn't inequality, just recognizing both need representation but are different, this doesn't justify terrible writing but it does explain why different stories/genres are dedicated to representing either. Obviously there are exceptions, and that's why we have made characters more diverse. Also that's how audiences might identify with heroes of the opposite gender now and then, (at least I do).

I think the dress tearing scene was a bit more traumatic in the animated version not only because the dress was completely ripped to shreds but also because the stepmother gave Cinderella hope. She told her that she could go to the ball if she had something to wear and finished her chores. Live action Cinderella never had that guarantee. Cinderella had her hopes purposely built up and then smashed to bits.

  • @0deadx21

+Jenny 1010 This makes the animated Cinderella come off as an idiot for believing her stepmother would actually allow her to go to the ball. She spend nearly a decade with that woman, surely she must have picked up on her behaviour and personality during all this time. First she tells Cinderella to "hold her tongue", than she says "how many times she had told her not to interrupt" and then she allows her to go to the ball in a very suspicious way. Jesus, Cindy, you're so stupid.

While I have yet to see this current Cinderella, I definitely have to agree that people don't give the animated Cinderella enough credit. People tend to think all she did was wait around and dreamed about marrying a prince, when in reality, she lost her mother and father, got stuck with three abusive people who tried to make every ounce of her life miserable. ANYONE who can put up with all the crap the animated Cinderella did and still find some happiness in their lives is strong in my book. Like you two said, she earned her happy ending through karma. She more than deserved to be happy. :)

Unfortunately a lot of people saw her as a weak damsel wanting someone to come save her which in reality she wasnt expecting that at all. She wanted to go to the ball because she has been isolated her whole life and that she just wanted one time where she could have a little freedom. The shoe fitting scene was amazing to her because she wasn't expecting to have anything other than that one night. So of course she'd be excited about getting to Marry a handsome stranger she met at the dance.

Im a feminist, and a women. I adore both Cinderella and Snow White as characters. They are patient, kind, resourceful, hardworking, and deserve to escape the abusive situations they were forced into. For the time period of the movies are set in as well as when the movies were made these woman are well rounded and actions make sense. All Cinderella wanted was a night away from abuse, she was rewarded a lifetime of happiness. Female characters don't have to all be 'strong woman', they have to exist, be relatable, and well written

+SylphofVoid13 Okay i admit that cinderella and Snow often get far more hate than either deserve and I also do not need my female characters to all be Katniss Everdeen but I'd argue that this version of Cinderella simply didn't have enough spine to be well written. I mean one example is when she gets kicked out of her room, into a room that is basically pneumonia in waiting and her only response is "oh, okay'. This works in the 1950's version because Cinderella is just a child, but in this version she's a full grown adult yet her "kindness" goes to such extent she becomes a total pushover, to the point of being unhealthy. Also another thing that didn't work in this version is that fact that "months" go past between the ball and the shoe fitting and yet Cinderella does nothing to go out and find the prince herself? Why?

  • @oldiesvideos1826

@@rebeccaclark9131 The first movie made more sense because there was a stronger implication of Cinderella being a "prisoner in her own home", having been "brainwashed" since childhood to believe she must serve her family, and presumed as knowing very little about the outside world. So it made sense that the ball was her main and possibly only chance of escape.

SylphofVoid13 I love that. I agree completely. They need to be well written. It's less about their qualities (strong, independent, etc), and more about the quality of those qualities. Just having a personality, virtue, and desires is a good base for any protagonist wether their virtues are courage, fortitude, and simple integrity (Cap America), or the lesson learned be understanding, forgiveness, and swallowing pride for a greater good (Princess Merida (who is underrated and misinterpreted)).

You guys said it best though. The reason why the original step mother and even Maleficent are considered the greatest Disney villains is because they're freaking terrifying. They don't need a motivation or complex backstory explaining how or why they are evil. Sometimes that presence and tone that they bring onscreen is just enough. People need to understand that a villain's purpose is to challenge and test the protagonist. To make them go though all these impossible odds that goes against their truths or beliefs. Backstory or motivation isn't necessarily a requirement unless it plays a big part in the story as a whole.

I also noticed a little difference that really changes the ballroom scene. Its common for Cinderella to be in the middle of the ballroom when she first interacts with the prince, with all eyes on her. The original Disney version? The prince sees her in the dark hallway. He leaves the ballroom to chase after the person behind the big crowd. No one else sees her till she walks in on the prince's arm, which causes as much of a stir. Letting him be the first person to see her flows like love at first site on his terms, not by the crowd's terms and influence. Its a little touch that is really cute.

Thank you! I literally have been saying that no other version does that! I also picked up the argument of why she’s not recognised by everyone especially the step family…but when I watched it again a) the kingdom won’t know who she is because she’s been kept in that house isolated and b) the step family are behind a crowd and are trying to catch a glimpse of her, it’s only when Cinderella gets close for a spilt second the stepmother almost recognises her but the curtain is closed before she gets a better look. That was so much better than just oh magic that know one can tell who she is…lame excuse

@@alexinburtonland In Perrault's version the prince went out to welcome a guest that just arrived, and when he enters the ballroom with her people start chatting ( Oh,how beautiful she , how beautiful she is,she must be a princess ),she interacted with the sister's and back at home they talk about the mystery girl they interacted with at the ball ,and Cinderella has the attitude of " Tell me more about this amazing, beautiful woman that I DEFINITELY have no idea who she could possibly be ... 😏😂😂 ".Asked for a dress to attend the ball tomorrow to see the mystery maiden, but Charlotte ( the older meaner sister ) shuts her down and says " Yeah to be sure, lent my cloths to such a dirty cinderwench as you are ...I would be such a fool ..!!! ",then the narrator tells us that Cinderella was joking and expected that answer and basically trolls the sister's.Them not recognising her makes sense in Perrault's because it highlights how shallow the sister's are, treating her differently based on what she wears While Cinderella treats them with kindness and respect regardless of how she's dressed

Ella has always been her name, ever since the original fairy tale. The Cinder part comes from how she sleeps by the fire and gets covered in cinders. This is explained in a few adaptations, too. Ella Enchanted and the Rogers and Hammerstein's musical both mention it. Her name was _never_ actually Cinderella. It's Ella. I think that was a mistake on the part of the opening narration in the original Disney film. THANK YOU. I hate how people rag on Cinderella for being anti-feminist. She's not. It's like hating on an abuse victim for not getting out, because _she actually is one_. They don't beat her, but they try and mentally tear her down and physically abuse her by overworking her rather than beating her. The opening narration even refers to her as being abused and humiliated before she was forced to become a servant, and then we see more of her being abused by her stepfamily. She wasn't in a position where she could just up and leave. She had nowhere to go, and she couldn't fight back. People are unfair to her because what ends up getting her out of the situation is a man. Which I think is unfair, it's actually the fact that he's a prince that saves her. They can't stop her from marrying a prince, but they could prevent her from marrying, say, a blacksmith. They're her legal guardians, and nobility at that if I remember right. Like the stepfamily's motivation was just pure jealousy. That's it. They wanted to keep her down because they were jealous. They wanted her to work to make her defeated and rough, but it failed. But they didn't take joy in tearing her down, they took _satisfaction_ that they were putting her in a place that made them feel secure in themselves. In the new version, they take joy in it, and that's the mistake. Even in _Cinderella III_, the château is shown to be nowhere near the town and beyond a forest and a meadow. It's clearly very far out on the outskirts of the kingdom. True, she's shown to be able to ride a horse bareback, but she's also in a situation where she has no choice. She's barefoot on a mountain path in a race against time. What I didn't like was how she treated Lucifer in that movie around that same time. She kinda just left him there. I mean the problem really is that _Cinderella III_ is trying too hard to appeal to a feminist audience when there was nothing anti-feminist in the first place. They turn Cinderella into an action girl who takes charge of her destiny, but in fighting for her prince, it takes away from why Cinderella was in the situation she was in the first place. I love the movie, don't get me wrong, Lindsay was right to name it the least awful Disney sequel, but it sort of clashes with why she stayed for so long. If you ignore that, it's a great movie. Also I have no desire to see this movie because I don't trust Disney's choices for these new live action movies, since they think _Emma Watson_ is a good fit for Belle. Which considering how Hermione was played, I really don't trust her to take the role seriously and be this level-headed brainy young woman with control over her emotions. I heartily disagree that she fits, but Merlin knows I'm the only person on earth who does.

tiny punkabuu no it's not, Cinderella is only the translated title of Cendrillon ou La Petite Pantoufle de verre in French, there is no such name of Ella except the British and American made up name for her because it has somewhat of a girl name at the end, even her other title is Aschenputtel in German, and Cenerentola in Italian has no indication of the name Ella, or any other name really, The only version that she has a name in it is in the Italian and Egyptian version, as she is called Zezolla and Rhodopis in Egypt, but this movie is not based off either version, so the naming part is completely made up by the director or the famous Twilight : New Moon writer

avrilfantasyrin Ella is a name, and one with a German meaning, at that. French, too. In both languages they mean "All". English/American meaning is "beautiful fairy". Also, her name is Ella in _Ella Enchanted_, as well, so it's not just made up for this movie. The fairytale book I have implies her name is Ella, as well, and as far as I know, it's a translation of the original, since it talks about how she shares fruit with her stepsisters over three nights, wearing increasingly gaudy gowns. The name doesn't come out of nowhere. One more thing- it's not a LIE. A lie means I'm purposely giving out information I know is wrong. Being misinformed is different. Consider that before you go flinging around accusations. Thanks for the history lesson, but drop the accusatory tone and try politely pointing out mistakes to people.

They're not even properly doing that to begin with. Everyone in the movie is their own character. They represent themselves, as they should, not a group. You're stupid.

I just want to point out that in the animated Cinderella, AT LEAST Cinderella CARES about the rats' well-being. She protects them from the cat. She feeds them. She makes them tiny little clothes. In THIS Cinderella, the ONLY THING she does for the damn mice is give them a hard-ass, sweaty, cold, glass shoe to sleep in (and MAYBE save one of them from the cat hissing at them.) They help with the work. They make her dress. They give her a ride to the ball. They SAVE HER LIFE by getting the princes' attention at the end when SHE is spinning and singing like a feather-brained ninny, rather than trying to get out. And the narrator OUTRIGHT SAYS that she just GAVE UP. And this is how she thanks them.

I've been watching ever after since i was a kid and I've come to realize, damn its a fucking good movie :D Its one of the few romance movies that I love and don't get tired of watching, and throught out the years have grown more fond of due to understanding more of it. I've also gotten a greater appreciation for the classic Cinderella due to hearing the childhoods of my cousin's mom's and grandmothers. Abandoned by their fathers, mothers dead or severly ill, lost their homes everything they ever had, they had to resort as working as maids, just to survive. They didn't even get paid for their work, they didn't get to have an education because they were washing clothes by hand, washing tile floor on their knees, ironing late into the night just for a piece of bread and scraps of food. They lived like this for many years untill they were finally old enough to go some place else and start their lives with their husbands who were iether supportive or just abondoned them with several kids to take care of. And dispite all their suffering they didn't lose their own minds and they didn't abondon their children. They worked their asses off so that their children didn't have to work like they did so that they could go to school and have a decent line of work and get paid to at least have more than just scraps of food and rags for clothes. I've realized that just like Cinderella these women had nothing for most of their lives, nothing except for hope. It was the one thing that kept them going and made it possible for them to have more than just nothing.

I'd say staying in that house just because it is the only thing she has that has any connection to her parents despite the abuse she has to endure is courage. I'm not saying if someone runs away from abuse they are not courageous, but staying when you can leave is hard. However, I might be wrong - there's a deleted scene in which the fairy godmother basically says Ella is underage or at least a dependant on the step-mother. So the stepmother is literally her guardian, so if Ella runs away, she can report her and force her to come back. (Probably wouldn't have done that, but the point is she could have) So maybe Ella wasn't there by choice, but because she had no other choice. She had to stay until she was older or married. In that case, that's not courage. Although, putting up with the stepmother and stepsisters is superhuman patience.

darkfur3 Technically, "Cinderella" is derived from "Cendrillon" (a portmanteau of "cendre"/ash and scullion). Her real name only started being Ella in English retellings, particularly Leslie Caron's "Ella." But yeah, Cinderella was meant to be a cruel nickname in the original Perrault story; her sisters also use "Cinderwench," which this remake also alludes to. Disney originally screwed up by making it her real name in the 1950's animated version. Cinderella starts out the beloved daughter of a nobleman....it is really unlikely he would give her a name that invokes ash.

If you really want am empowered version of Cinderella as a character, even if this is not Cinderella but it has similar elements, watch "Ella Enchanted". She's proactive, she's intelligent, she has desires and works hard to get what she wants. Not to mention that she's badass. I know people hate Anne Hathaway, but I really don't see why. I'm surprised Doug missed that movie when he was reviewing the live-action Disney films for Disneycember last year.

Cuz the 2015 film seems to be only one in existance that does. Danielle from Ever After is not Cinderella! Ella from Ella Enchanted is not Cinderella! Brandy from Cinderella (1997) is not Cinderella! None of them understand Cinderella's character. They either don't care, or try way too hard. Lily James is the only one who was spot on. Finally Cinderella was Cinderella and it's amazing it has taken this long to get her right.

I really did not like that movie. At all. When I found out it was based on a book, I didn't want to read it. I thought, "How could a book worth the paper and ink it's printed on have spawned such a terrible, pointless movie?" I mean it made Carey Elwes look bad. I LOVE Carey Elwes. And I think Anne Hathaway's pretty good, too. But some friends of mine were huge fans of the book. They insisted I read it, and ignore the train wreck that was the movie. And I enjoyed the noise out of the book. Don't get me wrong, I try to go in to movie adaptations of books with an open mind. Of course a book is going to be more detailed an engaging than a movie, but that doesn't automatically mean the movie will be bad. But "Ella Enchanted"... yikes.

Fairy godmother in fact have possible explanation.. in fact two: First is that as many of old European families believe, that they are descendants of some magical being. In this case Fairy Godmother is in fact her relative, and that would also explain why Cinderella see animals as more humanized then other characters see. Other explanation for not fairy tale versions is that she could have simply rich aunt or other relative, who like her but was unable to adopt her for some reasons. Such person simply could borrow her dress in time of need. PS: NC and his brother obviously didn't feel this movie.

barbaro267 As an adaptation of either the Charles Perrault story or the Disney classic, it barely measures up. For starters, making Maleficent a victimized antihero was a terrible move when I was expecting a true villainous protagonist, i.e. the Maleficent I knew and loved in the original. Having the king be the bad guy was uninspired, the fairies were horrendously stupid and the script was terribly written. It felt like an insult to Sleeping Beauty fans. They took a great villain and made her a boring antihero. As an elseworld story completely unrelated to the original, I could let it slide. But as the "true story" behind the original, then it's just disposable.

  • @scorpiocarnage1055

Oscar Stainton The problem is that they didn't make her an antihero. They literally made her a sympathetic victim who turned bad because of Stefan's betrayal. But I discovered something about Disney. When they have a protagonist, the good guy has to have a happy ending. That was their first mistake. It's not that Maleficent can't have a happy ending but there could have been a redemption story AFTER the events of Sleeping Beauty. But honestly, they should have stopped being stingy and let another company do it. Make Maleficent the petty baddy she is. I mean cursing a baby because you didn't get an invite, that's cruel. I mean no offense though. The fact that she was willing to do that shows that she definitely earned her rep as a villain. But she could turn into a dragon! A fire-breathing dragon! They didn't want to show her ripping villages apart, stealing girls out of jealousy or whatever, stealing boys for whatever purposes to show her evilness? *sigh* But that's Disney for you.

Oscar Stainton Agreed. I've said it several times in my life but god I never tire of saying it... Maleficent took the greatest disney villain of all time, someone who literally described herself as "The Mistress of all Evil"... and turned her into a woodnymph that got raped by a king and tried to get revenge, but then instantly regretted it and was good the entire time. The only good scene in Maleficent is the scene where they literally just took Maleficents entrance from the original movie and recreated it. That scene was amazing, I was so so so happy seeing it. I thought that maybe they were going to keep that tone throughout the entire movie from then on out and I'd of been happy... and then the line "She shall prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and fall into a deep deep sleep like death" and I swear, in the middle of the almost empty cinema I was in, I yelled out "OH COME ON!" and actually face palmed, it was such a fail

What does Cinderella not leaving her situation have to do with feminism? What does falling in love with a guy have to do with feminism? Absolutely fucking nothing. Feminism is the advocacy of equal rights between women and men. It has nothing to do with being a victim of domestic abuse, and it has nothing to do with your views of an ideal romantic life. It's a really stupid argument when people say that Cinderella is not a good feminine icon because she doesn't leave her situation (which is kinda victim blaming if you think about it), as well as the argument where people say that because she falls in love with someone, (while it was a short amount of time that they started to fall for each other, which I think is stupid) she's a bad feminine icon

I think it gets a bad rap, and while its plot has several problems and unfortunate implications, it's still got some really great stuff, and, on top of that, gorgeous animation. And while I still think the original is better from an artistic point, I was very pleasantly surprised by the re-make. I thought Cinderella was on par with her animated counterpart, but I also thought everyone else was given some much needed development, especially the Prince and the Stepmother.

I get that Rob & Doug kinda _need_ to address the *differences* between this Cinderella and every other movie "version" (Ever After, 1950 Cinderella, etc), but..I didn't mind how "passive" Ella is in this movie. Maybe I'm too forgiving (everything needs to be feminist & "pro-active", I guess) but I saw this version as an *introvert* who's very kind & gentle because she's clinging on to what's left of her mother (and maybe father, too). _She's the nicest person stuck in the worst situation_.

Paradox Acres I completely agree. I personally believe this Cinderella is a good a role model. She stays positive, she works hard, was kind to her step family, and in the end she forgave them. I also believe that the reason she didn't leave was that Ella had grown up their, she had fond memories their, and friends their. She was not ready to be able to give them up. In the end she left to be with the man she loved bring a portrait of both her parents to the castle. Could it have been better? Yeah, no movie is perfect, but by no means is this new Cinderella an atrocity. Their are plenty worse films. So I personally would recommend this movie, and i will respect the opinions of the movies critics and supporters. Also Cinderella is no longer a disney princess. The king is dead, leaving the Kit the only ruling monarch. Cinderella is now a queen. :D

harrietamidala1691 Agreed. You can make Cinderella a complex character, but..it's also possible that movie creators are *confined* by the story itself: they HAVE to show the dancing, the gown, the fairy godmother and the mice. In the end, it's the "Disney formula" that proves to be its own undoing: so many iconic moments they have to include in the movie means so little time to explore new themes.

My favorite version of Cinderella is "Ella Enchanted"--the book, the movie can rot in hell. Ella in that book is a great character, she's funny and rebellious, and she actively tries to improve her situation despite what's happened to her. I like the idea that the reason she's put in this situation of servitude is because she was put under a curse as an infant, and she HAS to obey every order ever given to her, but in spite of this she's always trying to find loopholes she can use to subvert the orders she'd given. That is how an updated, proactive Cinderella SHOULD be.

About the stepmother's plan. She really didn't think this through. Even if Cinderella didn't immediately rat out the stepmother when they got the palace, her plan would still fall apart. When Cinderella marries the prince, who at this point in the movie is king already, she becomes queen. She and her husband will have more power than the stepmother could shake a stick at. They'd be surrounded by advisers, guards, ect and be busy running the kingdom. There's no way she'd be able ruin their lives from her position unless she wants to try for all-out treason. At best, she'd be the queen's annoying stepmother who keeps butting in where she doesn't belong. If she makes Cinderella queen and think she can continue to abuse her, it's going to go about as well for her as it did for Viserys.

Wait, do you mean to say Louis Lane in the animated series was intelligent? I never got that at all. I thought her main traits were more competitiveness and enthusiasm, which is what constantly got her into trouble. I struggle to recall any situation where she did any thinking BEFORE rushing in. One of my favorite parts of that show was the series of episodes in which they addressed how dumb secret identities are. Clark wants to tell her that he is Superman, but she winds up in the hospital for some reason, and he decides its too dangerous from him to be around her, so he finds another job. The ultimate conclusion to this is him seeing Louis, who literally just walked out the door of the hospital, hear something about someone causing some sort of havoc, call dibs, jump out of her wheelchair, and run right at it. Here, Superman realized what Spiderman should have realized a thousand or so times by now, its her own darn fault that she is in danger, and it is actually SAFER for him to stay close to her.

I know this is an older video but I just wanted to point out how much I loved Cinderella as a kid. Exactly as you guys described, I aspired to be as kind, and hard working as Cinderella. I thought it showed great strength that she remained kind (as the narration mentions) even when she had the worst conditions. I wanted to be like her. Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella was also a huge favorite. This one? Eh.

I agree 100% too many people crap on the animated Cinderella. I'm so glad they pointed out how that character actually had some tenacity and charm (but she was smart about it) and so feminists are too quick to say it isn't PC but she was actually doing everything she could to leave. I'm glad they kept mentioning "Ever After" because I saw that in theaters as a kid and I instantly fell in love with it and it was my favorite "Cinderella Story." NintendoMan64 Disney is a company. Not a boogie man. They would have to find someone to fill those shoes or gloss over the character entirely and it would be a different movie either way and doomed to fail. Aladdin is different from Cinderella due to Aladdin being a product of a series of artists who gained their skills from developing the Thief and the Cobbler which were based on the stories told by Scheherazade. If Disney made another Aladdin movie it would be just another tale from Scheherazade. Probably won't even have Aladdin in it and it wouldn't be called Aladdin and the chances of the movie existing post 9/11? Who wants to deal with that PR storm?

Disney recasts famous characters ALL THE TIME!!!! Eleanor Audley was the character of Maleficent, but they had no problem putting Angelina Jolie in that role. Heck, Audley was recast as Cate Blanchett in Cinderella. Jim Cummings plays Winnie the Pooh, James Horan plays Scar, John Goodman plays Baloo, and they've been having Jim Messkemen and Dan Castellanetta voicing the Genie for several years in every Disney products not named "Aladdin" or "Aladdin and the King of Thieves". They've replaced Edward Norton with Mark Ruffalo. The whole "Thief in the Cobbler" analogy is irrelevant to the point considering: A. The film may have been started first, but Aladdin came out first and was better in almost everyway except unique abstract animation B. Even if the whole analogy was sensible, it wouldn't stop Disney. They've been linked to borrowing stuff from the past (See Kimba vs Simba) And finally, the three most known stories of A Thousand and One Nights are Sinbad (which has been told dozens of times + it's a bit too POTC esque), Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, and of course Aladdin. And people in the Middle East (at least the few I've spoken too on Arabic vids of Aladdin), adore the movie and don't find a single thing offensive about it (apart from the lyrical change, which WAS changed before the film was released overseas). In conclusion, for Disney, absolutely nothing is impossible. After all, they insisted for years that Snow White would never appear on home video and it;s fourth release is likely coming out Fall 2016. If Sleeping Beauty, Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella, and Beauty and the Beast are not off the table, Aladdin is most certainly not off the table.

Go see the movie, ignore all the crap you've heard about it, and take it for what it is - a telling of Cinderella, as a tribute to the old film. I was delighted with the things they left in there (old C is NOT my fave Disney film, but I'm an animation nut, I've seen it at least ten times. I was able to recognize the frames they recreated for this one). If you're not, just enjoy the cinematography, okay? Every frame is a work of art. :) Even if you don't like it your eyes will feast on prettiness.

Also, why couldn't the stepmom just marry Cinderella off to someone? She's a teenage noblewoman, she'd be bound to have suitors before her father died. If the stepmom hated her, why not be rid of her? Or have someone notice that "hey, the woman I was courting has disappeared, and the house she lived in now has a servant that looks exactly like her?" Where were her nobility companions? She was definitely old enough to be part of the social scene, why did no one notice that she was missing, or suddenly a servant?

Clearly he's too undereducated of the new Cinderella movie to be making any judgements. He's the defending the animated Cinderella - a two-dimentional character at the very most with no backstory, hardly did anything, and sobs a lot. The Lily James version is deffinately the better version. She has a backstory, motivations, makes attemps to get what she wants, knows how to deal with people the best way she can, puts others happiness before her own, and instead of sobbing and waiting to be safed, she moves on with her life.

I did feel that in the moment when Cinderella was kept in the attic and she doesn't seem to care was either the moment when she actually cracked or the moment when she kind of realised that she was going to starve to death and didn't see a way out so decided to just live in the dream. I half expected her to just lay down and give this death bed speech or something to signify that she's just given up and lost all hope. I did like this film, it's one that you watch before you go to bed, one that you don't really have to think about too much and don't really ponder over. You go to bed thinking of the pretty dress and enjoy the music and the imagery and I did enjoy the plot, but it certainly could have been executed much better.

She was raised by the stepmother from childhood, knew practically nothing about the outside world (so she couldn't just run off) and the prince never met her when she was a peasant girl. Hey, if they wanted to improve the logic (kinda) of the fairy godmother and perhaps make it a bit darker, what if they made her more of a selfish character in the beginning? Supposing she found that Cinderella would give her food and water despite threats, so she took advantage of Cinderella's kindness until that big night and planned to sneak off quietly, but then felt remorse and gave Cinderella the dress, etc. Turns out she could perform one act of magic, but it would only last until midnight - and so would she. When everything changes back, she faded away…?

Thank you so much! We also have to look at her circumstances. Cursed to die young by an all-powerful, vengeful sorceress when she is an infant; spirited away to a cottage in the woods and raised in secrecy by three immortal fairies trying to protect her from that relentless witch; kept hidden from all human contact with no knowledge of her true identity; and in spite of this, she has all the virtues you listed. The only problem with her is the fact that her personality is under-developed, NOT NON-EXISTENT! She has all of 18 minutes of on-screen action to get the audience on her side. I think audiences are spoiled these days, where they don't really have to pay attention to the character, because they get, what, 30 minutes to whine and complain about their lives, particularly Disney animated heroines. Aurora is, along with Princess Jasmine in Aladdin, the only official Disney princess who actually has the makings of a queen, imo. Comparing her to someone like Ariel, who I also like as a character, is comparing a typical 16-year old to probably the most regal, dignified, mature, noble, responsible 16-year old you'll ever meet. However, these days, noble = boring, I suppose. This is the same attitude which turned High King Peter in the Narnia series to a whiny pansy/prima donna in the live-action films. Glad to know there are others who see Aurora as I do!

It's in the original story (Or at least in some versions of the many, many retellings) and has been around a lot longer, like the original Grimms version where she was called "Aschenputtel" (ashfool), longer?

I found this movie quite a bit boring. The boom in popularity reminds me of the Alice in Wonderland; it had problems and yet everyone praised it to death... In fact, they had a lot of the same problems. This is the first review that didn't outright praise it based on a mix of nostalgia and 'Disney' blindness; in which a movie is giving a pass because 'eh, it is Disney'. I also think that woman going on a liquid diet and was really shameful. -.- That is a bad, BAD moral to send to kids. Want to make Cinderella more real? Make her look like a real person. I've heard the argument that it was because she wasn't given a lot of food that her waist was small, but lack of nourishment doesn't cause a slender waist and nothing more. For a modern film that's supposed to inspire girls it actually sends quite a few bad messages to them.

Like when the stepmother has her evil laugh. While they mentioned the scene passingly I thought it was pretty distracting, especially for a moment that was supposed to be tense. I think she may have done it more than once too. Cinderella herself does occasionally have the good moment, but then other times she seems to be dull; like she redid a scene over and over until she no longer gave the same life to it. On the hole I would say that the problems aren't as big as the ones in Alice in Wonderland, but I just have this feeling that corners are cut for money. Like all these live action remakes are so that they can get more money from the source material instead of trying other fairy tales or other stories as live action movies.

In regards to the queen Cinderella thing. She won't be queen, non royals/nobels can't be made monarchs, she will be a princess. A real life example of that can be seen in the swedish royal family where the crown princess married a man who was not a royal or lord, when she ascends the throne she will be queen and he will be a prince. So yeah, their not shaking of the princess stuff.

Kenneth Branagh: Okay, so we're making a Cinderella film that doesn't have a strong character, the stepmother is insane, the message is forced into someone's face. We're basically taking the good things from the original and slapping them in the face, correct? Disney Executive: No, no. We're making an updated version of a classic film and story to empower young girls. Kennith: You're trying to make money. Disney Executive: Pretty much. And you're going to help or we'll fuck up your carrier. Keniith: *sigh* Well, let's at least make it look nice. *hours later at a bar* Tim Burton: They got you too? 0deadx21 I'm an idiot if I believe what shit? You have to be more specific than "this", because that can fall under a lot of things. Also my opinion of a non-forced message is one that doesn't say it to someone's face in the first ten minutes of the film. A non-forced message, in my opinion, is one that you see through the film as the characters grow and develop. Take the original Cinderella for example, that one didn't need to flat out say the message, but people still got it. In this one, they force it down people's throats, and that's what makes it forced when you're actually flat out saying it several times in the film, because that proves you want a message, but can't find a way to write it into the script. Also, my original comment was just a joke, don't take it that seriously.

  • @0deadx21

    @0deadx21

asummer6dbz What the fuck does saying it in the first 10 minutes have to do with being forced? It's about HOLDING ON TO IT, PRACTICING IT, SHARING IT! How was any of that forced? As for the animated Cinderella, she did a lame, dull and boring job at it, not captivating in the least. LAZY, that's what I would call the filmmakers attempts at it. How the fuck did anyone got the message? Oh, and by the way WHAT MESSAGE? The movie makes no effort whatsoever at a message. You people made that shit up about there being a message. Too little time and effort was devoted to any of it. Everything was just there, no build up, no payoff, no development, no challenge. If anything, the animated film wants any message it could have had to stick as little as possible. It's pretty fucking clear the filmmakers didn't fucking know what to do with the Cinderella story and the human characters, and their main goal was to just have a Cinderella film in existance, instead of putting actual effort in the things that matter the most. Apperantly to them the most important thing was the mice. Well fuck the titular character, I guess, she only appears in less than half the film.

  • @asummer6dbz

    @asummer6dbz

    8 жыл бұрын

0deadx21 Saying it in the first ten minutes is just that, saying it. The film didn't demonstrate how to use it, and for a film with the target audience being young girls, showing it is just as important and more important than saying it because you can see the pay off, you see what's going on. When you say something, it's words, when you do something, it's an action, and people learn better from seeing something done and doing something than being told something. The message from the animated one was, "Work hard, don't give up and eventually things will work out for you." Cinderella worked hard doing the chores and going through the mental abuse, but she didn't break until the dress was destroyed, and was locked in her room. I'll concede the interesting character point, where she didn't have much of a personality in the film aside for being a kind and good person, you still saw everything she was going through. That Cinderella had no friends aside for the mice, and she can't have a conversation with them. That leaves the stepmother and stepsisters for conversing, in which each time we see them on screen together, they're abusing her in one way or another. She had no living chance to have a personality, particularly with all of this beginning in her childhood. When you say there was no effort, I have to argue that as well. Even if you say the story had little to none, you can't say the film itself didn't. For the time it came out, it was a beautiful film, still beautiful today. The way the captured the motions of the characters was very nice, and unique to each person. If you noticed, the stepmother and sisters all had sharper movements, always seeming more angular. Cinderella was more flowing in her movements, and the Prince (despite having no character at all), moved slowly and regally. So there was a lot of effort put into the film. I even admit there was too much time with the mice, but the rest was good. Human characters may not have been well developed, with the stepmother and sisters having no motivation. It's clear to see that this is heavily inspired, or if not, somehow got across a clear picture of child abuse. We see how Cinderella is left with the stepmother and sisters when she's young, likely around age ten. Children are easy to manipulate, and so when the stepmother begins her abuse, Cinderella can't get out and leave, and the stepsisters grow up around that behavior and do the same. By the time the story takes place, they don't know much else, and it is easy to say Cinderella probably wasn't allowed outside of the property, so she had no way out. That's a very real child abuse situation. So, no, we're not making thing up, we just don't have to be told things flat out. Also, can you please stop swearing almost every sentence, it makes your argument less credible.

asummer6dbz Am I to assume you're a moron who misses the most obvious of points. You must be since you believe Ella didn't practice any of what she believes in whatsoever. Unlike the animated film which is mostly tell and not show, the live-action film is the opposite and knows how to fucking balance telling and showing without it beng too much or too little. CINDERELLA'S LESSON HAS JACKSHIT TO DO WITH HARD WORK! WHAT THE FUCK DID ALL THOSE CHORES AMOUNT TO IN THE END? NOTHING, A BIG FAT NOTHING. They're not part of a goal of hers. Cinderella is one of the worst examples of the lesson of hard work I've ever seen. And that's why no lesson in Cinderella should be centered around manual labor. The animated Cinderella just comes across as an idiot. All this time and she knows nothing about her stepfamily. How can she be so stupid as to genuinely believe her stepmother would actually fucking allow her to go to the ball? Was Lady Tremaine really that fucking subtle about it? The things she said to Cinderella prior to this should have been huge red flags. About that abuse, clearly it's not much, just minor annoying inconveniences as far Cinderella acts about it. Oh, yeah, real abuse survivor that girl. The only real abuse I saw was in the live-action movie. The animated film fails miserably and damn is it underwhelming. HOW THE FUCK DO YOU FAIL AT MAKING A GENUINE ABUSE VICTIM? HOW?

I actually agree with their take on this movie. The only time that I felt that Cinderella had any sincere character growth in this movie was at the very end when she had to choose whether to submit to her stepmother's wishes or break the stepmother's power over her and go to the Prince. The fact that she went to the Prince and told him the truth about who she was and asked him to love her for who she truly was instead of loving the perception of her when they met at the ball impressed me. The only time I felt genuinely sorry for her was when she gets the news that her father has died. I actually liked the King and the Prince more than Cinderella in this version because they had a legitimate conflict that they had to overcome and I thought that the resolution of that conflict when they are talking in the bedroom was very well done.

Hi, Guys,I did not see the movie when it was playing in cinemas, and just watched it on DVD with my daughter. WOW! Afterwards, out of curiosity I checked how the movie was reviewed at the time and was surprised by some reviews, including yours.I thought the movie was old-fashioned in a very good way - no knowing winks, no cynical smirks, no existential angst! Also, no cheesy talking or singing mice! The movie was perfectly suitable to its audience of KIDS! It is a simple story teaching kids about moral behavior. It does not complicate things for 10-year old that need not be complicated at that age. I think that whoever did not understand this, is probably at that weird place in life when they still are still not parents but already too grown up to enjoy it. Or have a more severe condition - they are no longer kids at heart, which, of course no doctor can cure, and which means they are indeed closer to their grave than to their birth. To appreciate this movie for what it is, try not to watch it as a grown up, and it will all make sense then.Cheers!

They didn't try to do something stupid like needlessly turning the story dark or turning it into something unrecognisable.
