this is why i like fort minor, i'm happy that there are still rappers out there who really have something to say, hip-hop with a meaning is very rare these days.

The truth in this song gives me the chills. This society feeds on the negative things we claim to hate so much. We eat it up. We ask for the truth, but do we really wanna hear it for what it really is? No, we'd rather feel better.
"Give your whole neighborhood some second hand rap." One of the many reasons i love Mike Shioda. He's a genius

Lyrics Man, I love this rap game, mainly 'cause it's cool To add a little spice to the life you've been through Everyone exaggerates a tiny little bit Make that shit sound more gangsta than it really is You can't appear weak, man, we wanna hear street We wanna hear you spit your thug over this here beat Don't take it as sarcastic, I can't get enough I'm telling you, you can call my bluff, if it's not rough Then, I really don't need it, I'm not even ashamed I got too much reality that's filling up my brain So sell me on that product, I'm addicted to the game Suck it up like a cigarette, light it up, man [Chorus] It's just like a cigarette, it's something that I do Once in a while, but between me and you It's just like a cigarette, nobody's really fooled I don't want the truth, I wanna feel fucking cool [Verse 2] Let me tell you something that I realized tonight My hip-hop radio's like Marlboro light They both selling stories and they sound about the same Cigarettes say they safe, rappers claim they really bang We don't care if it's true when we just lay the money down We don't believe the words, we just love the way they sound They're acting like we're idiots, they're lying to our face Maybe we are idiots, we buy it anyway I'm running out to get the next rapper's CD Just sucking up the guns, drugs, and misogyny The same way that I suck up all the stories when I breathe That little bit of death, supposedly cancer free And everything they say's got the truth twisted up And twisted up's what I want, man, I can't get enough 'Cause even though we know it's all just a big bluff We just light another up, what, we don't give a fuck! [Chorus] It's just like a cigarette, it's something that I do Once in a while, but between me and you It's just like a cigarette, nobody's really fooled I don't want the truth, I wanna feel fucking cool It's just like a cigarette, it's something that I do Over and over, but between me and you It's just like a cigarette, nobody's really fooled I don't want the truth, I wanna feel fucking cool [Bridge] Man, listen to my words, listen for a while Lip service radio, don't touch the dial If you're in the car, turn up the track, man Give your whole neighborhood some second hand rap Hey, a matter of fact, listen for a while Lip service radio, don't touch the dial If your in the car, man, turn up the track And give the whole neighborhood some second hand rap [Chorus] It's just like a cigarette, it's something that I do Once in a while, but between me and you It's just like a cigarette, nobody's really fooled I don't want the truth, I wanna feel fucking cool It's just like a cigarette, it's something that I do Over and over, but between me and you It's just like a cigarette, nobody's really fooled I don't want the truth, I wanna feel fucking cool

"We don't believe the words, we just love the way they sound." That's modern life in one sentence right there.
Mike is a brilliant lyricist. I'm not into hip hop at all, but this kind of music and lyrics has a theme so universal and durable, it is difficult not to like and respect it.
This reminds me of some interview with Tupac. The part I'm talking about goes like this: "Listen to what they sayin', don't just bob your head to the beat"
The more I listen to today's rap tracks the more I cringe and the more I respect Mike Shinoda more and more, getting closer to call him a legend

***** Dude macklemore started rapping in 1997, so technically he's been around way longer than fort minor (2004). Give his album Language of My World a listen, it's more old school than this, and the lyrics are much more real. No reason to hate macklemore just because his new shit has got mainstream.
I can no longer describe what I feel when I hear these songs. Mike Shinoda, you are truly an inspiration.
Funny how 7 years later, the song is still relevant as fk

not a huge rap fan but this is good the instrumental is amazing
This is the only hip hop music I really like that was released in this Millennium. I hope that some day in the ashes of all the stoic party lyrics, and endless resampling of the same beats, that a new saviour comes and brings back originality.

george neve Yes, considering OP's description of popular music.
Jay-Z produced this song. Jay-Z should have listened to this song. This is the ultimate mockery of the rap establishment and the culture surrounding it that has led to the self-deception of millions of insecure African Americans who look for belonging. The genius of Shinoda is that he did it from inside the industry, and had its biggest name produce it.

lyrically brilliant
the song is straight up fire and true 🔥🔥🔥 Mike is such an underrated rapper he needs to be recognized more often
epic song (: love the beat
The funny thing is I've been listening to this album ever since it came out ever single fucking day. These songs simply never get old. The sound, the lyric, you can relate to it all so damn well. This is a lesson for song writers, if people can't relate to it then don't even bother making it.
This gave me chills, awesome song

Amazing beat.

I remember hearing this for the first time on a road trip to Bangalore and thinking to myself that hip hop will never be the same for me again.. FM was so underrated. Just pure genius.
my favorite song right now
i love this
Mike is one of those rappers who alot of people sleep on. In polls on social media i never see him ever get put up there like ever. Let one of your friends who are into rap give high voltage a chance, the lyrics on that song are wildly out there his play on words are way out there.
Fell in love with this song the moment I listened to the lyrics, so damn true
"Give your whole neighborhood some second-hand rap". Love that line, I wish someone would bump THIS in their car when they drive by instead of...other stuff. -_- Also, I love the choral arrangement. Really gives it a dramatic feel.
12 years… damn, my life was so different, so nostalgic, man…
omg that cigarette comparison is one of the most amazing mataphores I have ever heard

i will be REALLY happy if fort minor ever came out with a new album
I love you, Mike Shinoda. Your songs understand me.
Man Mike makes the sickest beats
I love this song its so true
This is definitely one of my top 10 tracks I relate to in my life. Mike Shinoda is such a beast, No offense he is GREAT in Linkin Park But When he is Doing Fort Minor.... I mean DAMN!!! This is what Real Rasp is. Mike And S.O.B. Is still keeping it alive with they flow!!!! MACHINE SHOP!!!
mike shinoda...simply.... sensational
sick man! really unique in ALL aspects.
This is as much addictive as cigarettes. I just wanna listen to it over and over¡
He's saying that it's something that people do for coolness. When Mike is one of those good rappers who actually talk about important things, not just about being cool
Mind expanding
I liked this song since the start of its beat, its cool to hear that there are musicians that know what there "buddies" are doing to what i call real music man. All goods Cheers Fort minor!!!!!
Great song !
Mike is awesome linkin park is awesome even tho I don't like their new stuff...I still like them..I've been with them since day 1!!
