this song reminds me of my mother's addiction, it's been over 5 years since I started telling her to stop smoking, she kept on saying "yeah next month", 2020 started "yeah I'm going to stop smoking, my new year goal." - she went outside to smoke literally 2 minutes later, it keeps happening and my grandfather got serious problems because of them and yet, she's still smoking, I can't really trust her anymore and honestly, at this point I just want for her to stop lying to me, that's all

i think the meaning of the song is about addiction: the girl saying"It's just a cigarette, and it cannot be that bad" is like the symbolism of her doing drugs (the cigarette) and the lyric after that: "Honey, don't you love me and you know it makes me sad?" maybe means that the guy battled or used the drug before and is asking her to stop. and that they solidified that with the lyric: "It's just a cigarette like you always used to do . I was different then, I don't need them to be cool" that he used to do drugs and he realized how much drugs dicked him over and stopped. if you look closely at the lyrics, my explanations starts to make sense Edit: can you PLEASE stop commenting on this post, i literally just wanted to state my opinion a year ago bc i wanted to have a decent discussion on the internet, but we cant have nice things can we? i think u guys are taking this song way too literally. everyone who is saying this song is about the pain you feel with a loved ones addiction is like so funny to me because the people like that are literally who the song is about. you only think that because ur looking at it from your bias of a person who disapproves of smoking. the song is about a toxic controlling relationship. it’s supposed to be ironic when she says “it’s just a cigarette” because in actuality she probably knows the argument is much more than that. the problem isn’t the cigarette, it’s her partners controlling manipulative behavior. it’s also pretty obvious in the line where he says he’s going to hit her. he’s getting this worked up to the point where he’s threatening her not just bc of a cigarette, it’s that she acted as a independent person and did something without his authority, which he obviously doesn’t like. throughout the song you can see him manipulating her too by treating her as if she’s an addict (even though it was her first cigarette) and she did a terrible thing that “hurt him” (but rlly didn’t) to coax her into guilt by making her believe she’s making irrational harmful decisions. she also mentions the fact that he smokes cigarettes too, this hypocrisy revealing that this isn’t out of concern of her smoking, it’s because he wants to control everything she does for his own benefit. lastly, when he says “maybe but is it [the cigarette] worth it if we fight?” here he is trying again to manipulate her into to thinking she’s being selfish in their relationship and that she’s ruining it aswell, when in actuality the only one fighting is him. she has no problem with him or what does. the statement is a disguised threat basically saying “do this because i want you to and if you don’t do it then i’m going to be mad at you.” the song maybe would of had a different meaning if he went about it in a different way but the way he manipulates her makes it very clear that it rlly isn’t the cigarette that’s the problem. if this was a healthy relationship the partner would be accepting of their differences even if they didn’t agree with it and would have displayed their concern of their new habit of smoking in a way that isnt forcing anything onto them through gaslighting and using their own relationship as personal leverage. idk if youve been gaslighted before then youll pick up on the patterns and quickly realize what’s going on.

My parents and (of age) siblings always say “Why can’t I drink” or “why can’t I smoke? I’m grown.” It’s not like I’m forbidding you from ever doing these things again, I, as a child, just don’t want to see my kin chug 7 beers in one night. I don’t want the smell of smoke to disturb me to the point of tears. I never want to see someone I see as trustworthy and having good judgement reduced to fits of anger because of a substance they CHOSE to take. Hiding in bathrooms gets tiring. It scares me because I’ve seen what it can do, bruises, burn marks, torn furniture and broken windows. And it’s not that I can’t trust you it’s that I can’t trust the chemicals in those products that you consume by the ton after a while. Ever since they stopped drinking for no reason it’s always a holiday. “I’m only drinking because it’s..” or “today is ----, so I can drink”

Ok so I figure this will get ignored but, I have a theory to this song. This took hours to plan out lol- Theory: You and your family are sleeping, but suddenly you hear a loud bang come from inside your house. You quickly go into your blanket and tears start falling from your eyes and onto your bed. Your family was still asleep so you decided that you would go check it out and wake your mom up, and you and your mother go up the stairs to see what it was. You realised the attic door was open. ~ The Attic ~ You and your mother climb up the ladder to see what the loud bang could possibly do with the attic. You start to open your mouth and say.. "Mom, how old is this attic?" Mom: "I don't know.. I haven't been here before." All around you were boxes full of olden days furniture. You start looking around but then you see a book with spiderwebs on it and heaps of dust on it.. You brush the dust and spiderwebs off and look inside the book with a worried look on your face. All it said was creepy things you wish you never knew. You: "Gosh.. I feel like I'm going to have nightmares from reading this book.." Soon, you close the book but then you get knocked out by your mom on accident. Mom: Sweetheart?! What happened, I'm sorry! I didn't mean to knock you out!" There was blood on the side of your face and blood dripping down over your eye and some of it went into your eye.. ew. ~ The Knockout ~ You wake up and realise you were back in bed and it was daytime. You thought to yourself.. "Wasn't I in the attic last..? Or was it a dream... Pff.. Maybe it was just a dream..." You feel blood on your face and spring out of bed and rush to the bathroom to see what it is. You start crying once you see the blood on your face. You run out the bathroom screaming and your mother came to check up on you but realised you were gone. She was holding a plate full of food. Once your mother heard screaming she ran up to you asking.. Mom: "What's wrong sweetie?!" You hug your mother saying.. You: "My face it's red!" Mom: "Oh my god.. We'll get you to the doctor fast!" You: Please no! I don't want to go! ~ At the Doctors ~ Doctor: "Well it seems she's bleeding but the blood is dry. Do you know what caused it?" Mother: "Well lastnight we heard a big bang so we went to check it out and when I turned around she was knocked out with blood on the side of her face and her eye. But that's all I remember." Doctor: "Well take her home and see if the blood gets worse, if so bring her back here and we will check whats wrong with her face and who caused it." Mother: "Okay, see you doc!" Mother: Sweetie, it's time to go home!" I can't continue anymore so I'll write the other stuff in the replies-

My late nana smoked 3 cigs a day and said that for some people nicotine calmed their nerves. From what I can get from this song, the woman got it from Jaimee Lee as a crutch form her mentally abusive husband who is too smart to leave physical marks on her so he wont get arrested." When it want to stop I can" aka " When I want to get away from this abuse I can stop smoking/ using as a crutch."She is telling this to him relationship wise as well as her future self smoking wise as a double meaning. "Like you always used to do", etc.is her making excuses and trying to make herself believe in her delusion that she is doing this as a look-up of sorts to her husband. Since the husband was only using them to "be cool", he may have started out looking for companions and got too used to being power hungry. He is in fact so used to it that it turned into his own " drug" because if the way he perceived masculinity. The husband is them twisting her words against her "Maybe, but is it worth it if we fight?"(She made an excuse/didnt escalate it, but he made it after all this manipulation so she would break and tell him, because he 'gave her an opening/ made her break'. He might also think Jaimee knows what is going on and/or cheating with her but he tells her he will give her 3 smacks to make her believe it was more her fault.Think about how the sibling who did worse gets more punishment. The part where they are both talking is her in the asylum after the police arrested him. She is hearing his voice and she is remembering how badly he broke himself and beat her until the neighbors probably heard the ruckus and called the police. She is addicted now as is using the ciggarettes as another crutch for her PTSD. She tells herself for that final time" Honey(her now), don't you trust me(past her telling future her in the present because no one understands you better than you understand youself)? When I want to stop I can." She is so delusional at this point because she felt both the one she had a mixed love with and the one who was trying to help in his own way betrayed her. The husband probably cut her off from her family a long time ago. So her singing in the ward is what we hear on our side of her mind because she is lost and is speaking incoherently because of jow traumatic it was. This is why its a ciggarette DUET. The one she was then and now are talking to each other in the asylum. If you want to make an animation out of this pls give me credits and thank you for coming to my ted talk.

Y'know even though this video was posted on the 25th of April 2020 I'll continue listening to it, it's really nice to take a hear of it, whether it be relatable or only for the vibe, i think we all have a special place for it in our hearts. ((RANTING INCOMING!!!)) I've read a lot of the comments here and i do understand one another's problems. My family has always had the line of smoking, my mother is addicted to it while my father on the other hand has been taking some breaks from it however it's not much of a difference, as years go by you just get used to it. I personally tried smoking a few times and in the end, i can say, i don't really see the point of it, it's not even that addictive even, in my point of view it's more of how much a person smokes a day so say if you are smoking 5 cigarettes a day that's overuse and can be called addiction, because you've made yourself a continues loop of doing the same thing over and over, but if a stop is put to this loop, you wouldn't be addicted that much, yet no one seems to care that much for 2 days i can say, i got away from my addiction, i drank too much coffee for when i was younger (that is 9-10 of age) because my family was always busy and their parenting skills weren't the greatest, and yes i can agree on the fact cigarettes and coffee are a whole other thing but with the enough dozes you might end in a same pattern with different results, if your interested, my coffee addiction brought upon me stress, anxiety and being tiresome all the time, it isn't good. Scientists have said everything is healthy as long as it's in small dozes, so please to who ever is thinking of starting an addiction like drinking all sorts of alcohols, snorting/smoking all sorts of stuff just please don't and if you do for personal reasons, keep it on minimum. English isn't my first language so i apologize for any spelling, grammatical and punctuation errors.

Cigarette duet but what if it's a swapped version? The wife is worried about the husband smoking.

1:09 he reminded me when my dad told me that when he was 11 he started smoking for the first time. and it was because he didn't have a good childhood... he didn't deserve that :(

I discovered this so shortly before everything I built in 2021 fell apart, I remember at the start of summer break when I was so excited to spend more time with my friends just for everything to go south in the first week. This was the last thing I listened to before we all never spoke again and listening to it now makes me strangely sad but nostalgic thinking back to when I first discovered this song.
