Cidoo V65 A keyboard that does many things right but has some fatal flaws that I can't recommend

Ғылым және технология

(Please, BEFORE BUYING THIS KEYBOARD! visit the company's web site: www.cidooo.com/enindex.htm a non-https, broken web site that does not even list this keyboard. Would you buy a product from a company who cannot even bother to get their web site right? And post sales support, none to speak of!)
In this video I take a look at the Cidoo V65, a 65% two mode gasket mount knob keyboard with VIA. I've been wanting to get a hold of this board since I first spotted it, I was excited and I had high expectations, but was severely let down.

    It was very weird though. When I got it, it was sort of in a ”forced wireless” mode where the wired connection did not do anything bit give power to the keyboard. No matter which way I had the switch in the back, it could BT connect to my phone but did not register wire connection to my desktop. It was solved through Fn + Space (iirc) quickly - the command to disconnect BT. That made everything go back to how it should be. Weird indeed. Minor clicking on the right side of the left shift and otherwise quite consistent indeed. From my expectations and scarse reference base (to say the least) I’m indeed happy for what I got for the pay. Based on your comments here I wish it stays that way so I can avoid contact with an absent support 😂

    @@pn-kb honestly I have no idea mate. As my previous comment it seemed to be in a sort of ”forced wireless” mode when I got it, and switch in the back did not to any difference but give power (it could still only be BT connected even if the switch in the back was off). In that process I noticed I got the RGB in BT wothout any wired connection. Iirc RGB still worked even when I sorted the ”forced mode” and did the wireless BT connection normally again. Can try again when I get back home and double check.

    @@MechKeyboards iirc their ali store provides free returns so if theres an issue with it on arrival you can at least get your money back, in the long run im not sure theres any support either. both epomaker and the ali store gave me wrong info about it not supporting pcb mount stabs when it clearly does, and i learned this off youtube and the mech keys discord, else i would not have ordered. another thing to note is that for me the switches that are included felt quite fragile and i even had one of the plastic pins snap off one of the switches when i pulled it out. this has never happened to me in the few years ive been into this hobby and im not sure if it was caused during assembly (forcing the switch into the plate and pcb at an awkward angle) but it's alright since i was planning on replacing the stock switches anyway, too light for my liking. hope this helps anyone looking to buy this board as well:)

    @@binb0yyt honestly, I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think this board will last more than a handful of months. The lack of QA/QC, the pins that were not crimped in the JST connector, the leftover flux, etc. Nothing but red flags. I like how it sounds, but if it doesn't work, it's just a pricey paperweight. Good luck! AliExpress, free returns, 🤣🤣🤣 AliExpress allows any scammer to sell on their platform, stands by thieves when "disputing" an issue, and rarely, if ever provide refunds. Most of your gripes are quite valid. Got myself the FinalKey variant of the v65 and it's been an awesome on-the-go work board so far. The heft and weight is still enough to make it feel premium while not being too unwieldy like other heavier aluminum keyboards. And for the price point... definitely still worth getting despite its clear design flaws.

    I can agree with you. I myself am looking to buy this keyboard. I'd say adhesive feet and the Bluetooth indicator are minor gripes, and many people don't mind them (myself included). But the second one regarding connectors is a very valid criticism. This keyboard appears to be suitable for the entry-level mechanical market, but it may not be suitable for the enthusiast market.

    sure, there may be tiny flaws here and there, but i dont think that any of these are fatal whatsoever (except for strike 2 maybe). for strike 3, most people buying this board are probably going for a retro theme on a budget, and rgb doesnt really fit with that at all and isnt that big of a deal. bluetooth also has a lot of latency and rgb can be considered more for gamers, which means they probably wouldnt use bluetooth if they wanted to use the board for games. for strike 1, the feet on top of the screws isnt that big of a deal, the feet are still gonna stick on somewhat cuz its sitting on a flat surface. it also makes the board look a bit sleeker and cleaner imo. i can see how it can be annoying for some people, but it definitely isnt a fatal flaw. for strike 2, the jst not being crimped was either bad quality control or a rare defect for ur unit, pretty unlucky considering ive never heard of anyone else running into this issue. even if this is a common quality control issue, i do feel like the value ur getting from this board is insanely good. ur pretty much getting a board with a full aluminum case, gasket mount, polycarbonate plate, decent prelubed switches, plate mount stabs that can easily be tuned to sound great, pbt cherry profile dye sub keycaps, and a knob, all for around $130... seems pretty good to me. keep in mind that this board is made out of aluminum and comes with all of these higher end keycaps and switches, for $130, and that most aluminum barebones kits like the keychron q1 can start at $150 or more.

  • @MechKeyboards

    @MechKeyboards

    Жыл бұрын

    > most people buying this board are probably going for a retro theme on a budget, and rgb doesnt really fit with that at all (sic) That's quite a subjective statement you are applying as objective. The rubber feet could have had a nipple piece to fit into the screw channel, not an adhesive which will loose it's ability to stick once removed and reapplied, losing one means a wobbly board. The JST connector is poor QA/QC, what else did they fail to test? Also, if you needed support or a warranty replacement, do you think you'd get one? These are just my opinions, I know people who have this kit and enjoy it, I personally did not feel the price was worth the compromises.

    I did some digging in the manual online and found this line, "Note: In order to saving energy. Keyboard without backlighting under Bluetooth mode, unless plug in factory USB cable or power restoration." So it sounds like it's a "feature" to remove backlighting in BT mode. Not going to lie, I still ordered one. Depending on what I end up liking better between this and the Zoom65 (which still hasn't shipped yet) I'll make one of them my travel board and gift the other one to someone. The stabilizer is changed to screw in stabilizer 5. Change the keycap to ABS doubleshot translucent 6. Added black and wine red cases 7. The length of Gasket strips has been adjusted 8. The structure of the Bluetooth toggle switch has been improved and will be more stable Overall for the price. I think this would be a perfect board for me to use at work!! Well, built one for my mate and I would say it's good at this price point (only 88 bucks for a cnc aluminium kit in my country). But there're some flaws that I have to mention it here: First of, the switch used to switch between wired mode and bluetooth mode a lil bit loose (but thankfully it will be fix in the R2) Second, the aluminium surface feels...cheap. Yeah I know we can't really expect it's going to be the same as high-end kit but still it disappoints me a little bit Third, as you mentioned in the video, you can't use led on bluetooth mode, which is kinda weird (this is the first time I've ever seen a keyboard doesn't allow you to turn on led while using bluetooth lol) Last but not least, you can use VIA but still the firmware is buggy as hell. I tried to change the led color and you know what? It's literally flickering after changing the color (even after you change it for hours) and the fact that they don't test it properly after releasing the board made me feel frustrating (they said it will be fixed in the next update but still, ya know) So overall, I'll rate it 7/10 (It has some potential and hopefully they will improve it in the R2). Also I recommend you to have a glance on the Monsgeek M1 (also aluminium, released recently and it's a small brand apart from Akko). It uses the same pcb from the Mod007s and the case surface feels really nice with the price only at 69 bucks, and the GMK67 (literally a clone of the V65 [same layout], plastic, have 2 daughterboards, light af with the price at 40 bucks) ;)

    @@punpun3765 it's really a question if you want to have full control over customizing the functionality and the ability to access VIA using a web browser from any operating system. I haven't used the closed source Monsgeek software, but I've been told it's quite similar to Akko Cloud, which would make sense. If it is, it's not too bad to use. I just reviewed the Akko PC75B and there is a bit near the end with the Akko Cloud driver: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qIieyax8XcjdZqg.html

    I had a hard time watching you complaining over feet on top of the screws for I feel like a half of the video, admitting that keyboard sounds and feels good, and I'm just like... really? I see how it can be quite annoying, but I don't think someone will open the keyboard on a daily basis and there are spare feet. RGB is not a problem for me at all, considering other great stuff. only connector issue felt like a real issue, but it can happen to anyone I guess. my heart trembled when you tried to pull it out holding cables 🥲 Thanks for you critical review, it's good to have something to compare with, because everyone is praising this keyboard. Low budget and aluminum don't usually go together, but if you like both aluminum and plastic, the Halo series is ready to go OOtB and when considering they are fully loaded, they are about as well priced as can be had for wireless and aluminum: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hKRml61-e5TTYLQ.html

    @Gabriel Albuquerque It depends what you consider low budget? This Epomaker Cidoo v2 is available in Amazon US at $130 price point - Alum/Linear switch. If you can get KBD67 Lite (65% board) at $120, add $50 Durok Black Lotus linear switches and $30 good XDA keycaps from Amazon, then you have better keyboard than this. But again, you have to add $70-80 over this keyboard's price. Your choice. I'm still not decided, but leaning toward KBD67.

    I got this board a few weeks back and the exact same thing happened to me with the daughter board connector. Being new to the hobby it was scary, thought I ruined my board, the plastic connector kind of got deformed as I try to remove it from the socket and one of the pins popped out. Luckily I was able to wiggle it back in and the board works fine now. Will not be removing the socket again as it feels like I can further damage it. I thought it was just me with my clumsy hands (never happened with any other board) but now I see it happen to Mark I know it was not me :) Otherwise I'm loving the feel and sound of the board especially for the price. I saw on their FB page they are releasing a version 2 and the screws are being moved from out under the feet, hope they fix the cable connector defect too.
