    @@NightCabbage One of my fave songs by them. And his God's Plan on Love Is Dead is my favorite song on that album. His voice is ok, but the instrumentals and melodies have this looping/driving feel their other songs don't and I love that. I often put his songs on repeat. Hypnotic.

    Dude, Martin's vocals are fuckin' awesome. Listen, if you only expect singing voices that are immediately gratifying, then you need to widen your close-minded vocal tastes. Martin adds his own personality with his voice and holy shit does it work. Imo, his vocals don't take any "getting used to..." he's a good singer.

    I guarantee over 90% of the negative comments are Chvrches fans who either just recently got into them or have never been to a live show... Most of the actual concert goers will tell you "Under The Tide" is one of the most loved songs live as the energy is amazing with the crowd! Martin goes crazy on stage dancing like a lunatic and everyone just goes ape-sh*t! I will be honest as well and say yhat before seeing a show I thought the song was underwhelming. After being amidst the crowd during the song it has given it a whole new life and feel to it for me. Trust me when I say certain songs change after seeing the band live. Definitely one of my favorites!

Are you really happy? Stay under the tide Stay in my eye line Looking ahead, there is a chance Wherever it all ends Head up, head up And stay strong Holding your head up, head up Keep holding, holding

    Lot of people saying that this isn't "true" or "good" CHVRCHES because it's not Lauren singing, or that it's not really passionate when performed live or something to that effect. I couldn't disagree more. I've seen them live twice (first at Sasquatch 2013, second in Vancouver September 2013) and at the Vancouver show I was the first one in the venue and watched the whole thing right against the stage. They performed Under The Tide (back then just called "Tide") for one of the first times live and it was face-meltingly good. The amount of passion and fervor they all put into performing this song was palpable. Total chills all around. I love Lauren but she doesn't need to be the only singer to validate the band's music.

    This is the second song I've heard from chvches so I though "hey cool, they swap the mic for different songs, and Im really enjoying this tune.. much more than that cliche ridden tune 'the mother we share', nice". Having read only a couple of the comments I gather that isnt actually the case. Let me say to the fans who are disappointed about Lauren not singing - try not to be so fickle about music. There's a comment here saying "we all came for her voice" and it has a lot of likes... that fucking sucks. Why is music all about just one pretty voice to so many people? I get it kinda cause I love the voice of Little Dragon but there's actually decent songwriting and sounds too. Idk, I just feel deflated to see this damn decent song thats different from what I expected to be hated on for the lamest most shallow of reasons. As long as mainstream audiences can only focus on a pretty voice, asses like Simon Cowell, dumb ass lyrics and culture sucking shows like the voice/country idol are gonna be prevalent. What Im trying to say here is, OPEN YO MINNNDSSS PEOPLE!

    cragnog Yeah, no. No. Lauren's voice is much better and yeah she is the sole singer for most of their songs so obviously I listen to Chvrches because of her. Saying "OPEN YO MINDS PEOPLE!" doesn't make your unusual preference less unusual or make me like the guys voice more, it just makes you sound like a conspiracy theorist. Ok, you like the guys voice, most people don't or like it nowhere near as much as Laurens, but ok - that's your opinion. But we are not presumably closed minded? Just because we don't like it.

  • @cragnog

    @cragnog

    Sam I don't think my opinion is "unusual" considering people seem to agree and I don't really have a preference either way. Also, Im not telling you to open your mind to some conspiracy and really I have no idea why you bothered saying that. It's not really an effective point... I don't know why you are being defensive dude. When I said open your minds, its a suggestion to people to see this song for what it is, not just compare it to the chvches they knew and couldn't stand to see change (apparently). If you did that already then the message obviously isn't for you, and if you just don't like his voice or this song thats cool.

    There is a sort of down-to-earth-realism in how martin expresses himself and in how this song manifests through him. His 'character' here and in the live-performances (but not just the high-energy in his dancing), embodies something of modern man. In this tune is the mantra taught to us by our fathers and father-figures, one we keep repeating to ourselves, to keep our heads up - to keep going. It doesn't just 'come to us', we have to keep saying it, pretend to be 'strong', and hope to God that that 'our heads are actually kept up'. At once, this tune exposes that bewildering symphony that is the marriage of three things (a) the realization of our inherent weakness - that we don't have power, (b) an ecstatic hope - of the grace that will carry us through, (c) a satisfaction of this way of things.

    Well fuck me. It seems like 90% of the guys commenting here are like "LAUREN OR GTFO." Lol. Why? Is Chvrches = Lauren + Extra Fluff? Sorry, they aren't Sting and the Police. Lauren has a great singing voice, yes, but, bypassing general fan expectations, Martin could sing lead on several of Chvrches' songs, and sing them WELL. And what is with the Lauren obsession? It's kinda creepy. She's as equal a member of the band as Iain and Martin, it's not like you're gonna marry her one day or some shit. The three are a rock solid band with a unique sound and they're going to continue doing whatever the fuck they want. Hopefully they'll share the lead mic more on future releases, I'd like to see where they would take things. (also iain plz)
