He also comes over as a real journalist without bias and a hidden agenda!! .... What a delight and breath of fresh air the BBC could learn a great deal from!!! Ths is the quality of journalism and decency we all in Britain want and admire!! Take note SUN and thanks!!

Compared to Churchill ay? Hmmmmm, well as a history fellow there are some lovely discrepancies I can't leave. Did Boris ever serve in the armed forces? Get captured as a Prisoner of war? Write a column for a newspaper whilst reporting from a war zone? Come home to enter a career in politics and become first lord of the Admiralty? Switch party when he didn't feel he fit, only to change back despite all his subsequent critics? Has Boris denounced the ambitions of men like Putin because of being sick of the establishment appeasing a dictator? For all his criticism, Churchill spent all his life in the cross hairs, be it from weapons or from words. What has Boris done? Hidden behind his status, squatted in the foreign office, led the leave referendum only to drop out to avoid any hard work, to then sweep in at the end like a saviour. The 2 are incomparable in my eyes, and to even pretend to hold them on the same level is an insult not only to Churchill as a man, but to his legacy as a whole.

While we're talking about Churchill's supposed racism, "Winston" became a very popular name in the West Indies after World War II due to the high esteem he was held in there. Just because he wasn't woke doesn't mean that he was terrible towards them, and they clearly believed so too.

I remember when Churchill died in 1965, but don’t remember him as a politician, however listening to my father and grandfather talk about him they both said he was the right person to be the war time Prime Minister , but was useless as a peace time Prime Minister. They also told me and its never mentioned, that Churchill as Prime Minister was running the war effort, but it was Attlee as Deputy Prime Minister who was running the country on the domestic home front. So when the 1945 General Election came it wasn’t such a surprise that Attlee won, but his huge majority was.

Actually, the Gallipoli expedition, in spite of being 'the largest amphibious operation' until D-Day, was seriously undermanned. The force was fewer in number than both Churchill and Hamilton (the Commander of the expedition) thought necessary. They allowed their view to be overborn by those generals, led by Kitchener, who were heavily invested in the European war and thought the Dardanelles expedition was essentially a sideshow and any force sent would be better employed on the Western Front.

A wonderful biography: I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. What would be interesting is a thorough investigation into his relationship with Roosevelt who was far more to the left than he; a man who was surrounded by communists, communist sympathisers (like Harry Hopkins) and fellow travellers. These people had more than a little to do with America's late entry to the war, and America's refusal to send arms to England until the eventual lend-lease breakthrough (which was a pretty hard-nosed policy anyway).

I don't care about anyone's views towards Boris politically. But as a human being and besides from the book he wrote himself attempting his own comparison with Churchill, the fact people compare to the two with any natural likeness is sickening. Simply, if there are similarity, Boris took those ideas directly from the man's literature.

A minor point. It's good that Mr Roberts pays tribute to the Commonwealth soldiers who stood with Britain and to reiterate the huge courage and loyalty nations like AU NZ & Canada showed to England coming immediately to her defence. However, he is wrong that it was just the Canadians that stood against the threat of a German invasion during and just after the dark days of the Dunkirk evacuation. The 2nd Echelon of New Zealand soldiers was diverted to England to form part of the defence of this island too. They remained here until 1941 when it was thought safe enough for them to leave us and join their fellow Kiwis who had been defending Egypt since Feb 1940. Perhaps too, it may be added that it was a brilliant New Zealand air marshal, Sir Keith Parks who orchestrated the air defence of London and the South East, and that many Kiwis, Australians and Canadians also flew in the Battle of Britain. While it was overwhelmingly the British who made up our early forces the contribution of these Commonwealth soldiers, airmen and sailors was not just significant but given that they were all volunteers it proved the great bond that existed between our nations.

Andrew wants to sell books and, like all intellectuals, would like to take part in history in the making. Churchill in 1940 as First Lord of the Admiralty was a disaster during the Norwegian Campaign and, in 1945, being 70 years old and a spent force, he insisted, as many old men do, on standing for PM (when reelected he had another stroke and was totally useless) . Being part of the upper classes, he did NOT understand that the British people wanted "homes fit for heroes" in 1945. Last, had it not been for Hitler, he would have ended in the dustbin of history ( so would have De Gaulle) .
