Chuck Yeager's Air Combat - Colonel Tomb

Raymond Yee reminded me about encounter with Colonel Tomb in earlier Brent Iverson's title - Chuck Yeager's Air Combat from 1991. So here we are. I'm running CYAC CD version 1.1 (re-released by HitSquad). It has better joystick recognition handling - the previous version would default to second joystick or additional axis (rudder and throttle) as primary device which means some additional fussing in DOSBox keymapper. Version 1.1 fixes that issue. The other issue however remains - the auto detection of audio device will most likely fail when using higher DOSBox cycles - it will switch to PC Speaker, also Gen. Yeager's speech will be garbled. The quick fix is to start the game with "blaster covox1" switches which will load SoundBlaster and loud speech driver for Covox Speech Thing and you can use higher cycles count for fluid gameplay while enjoying better soundscape.
But let's get back to the meat. We will be flying F-4E Phantom - in real encounter it was F-4J without the gun. So winning with only missiles will be the challenge. The only sensible tactic is to use energy fight. Going into turning fight with MIG-17 driven by ace is pure suicide here - as I found out myself on my first try. If you stick to the end you will witness my lucky shot with the Sparrow.

I guess the best graphics is your imagination. I used to play this game and I swear the graphics looked much much better than this in my head LOL.

Seeing this after however many years its been broke my brain... another 30 years and we will look at games today the same way no doubt.
Ah yes this game was necessary to answer the questions at the opening screens otherwise you’re kicked out to DOS. Other than that for an early 90s game it was indeed immersive.

I played this game at work. Now games are outta control.
Loved this game back in the day. I had it from a friend, with a cheat so you skipped the questions to go straight into the game. This mission was suprisingly easy if you played to the F-4's strengths, sticking to "zoom 'n boom" only.
I freakin loved this one! Got me one if those grey Quickshot analogue sticks that looks like a blockade runner just for it. Brent Iverson brought some great flight games to the scene l 🤩🇬🇧
This game was great physics wise. And the AI was no slouch either. Heck, even better than some newer stuff. The graphics are as crappy as I remember, but the rest is surprisingly pretty good.
Year is 1991 and look at the enemy plane's AI, it is epic! This game was my favorite.
I used to play this game a lot back in the day. Was years ahead of its time in many way's.. Thanks for the trip to my past 😂

Same guy behind the helm. CYAC's DNA is well engrained in USNF and its sequels. From obvious things as flight model (check out flight envelope window) to subtle things like the system where Chuck gives you verbal advice (in text format) which evolved into RIO / wingman throwing comments dependent on what's going on and how you actually perform. Or damage modelling and even displaying its status with the same key command. Basically USNF was Chuck Yeager's Air Combat 2: Naval Edition ;)

Just did everything and it works like a CHARM!!! I even activated FCS and am playing it with the CH flightstick pro. Back in 1995-6 (edited) I played on a 386 with a GENIUS J 05 gamepad. Wow. The only thing missing is the crack that the og version had. But it is a small price to pay.

There are voices on intro that are loose. Sound blaster compatibility
