Chuck Yeager remained in the Air Force after the war, becoming a test pilot at Muroc Army Air Field (now Edwards Air Force Base). After Bell Aircraft test pilot "Slick" Goodlin demanded $150,000 ($1.6 million in 2015 dollars) to break the sound "barrier," the USAAF selected Yeager to fly the rocket-powered Bell XS-1 in a NACA program to research high-speed flight.
Yeager in front of the Bell X-1, which, as with all of the aircraft assigned to him, he named Glamorous Glennis (or some variation thereof), after his wife.
Such was the difficulty in this task that the answer to many of the inherent challenges were along the lines of "Yeager better have paid-up insurance."[21] Two nights before the scheduled date for the flight, Yeager broke two ribs when he fell from a horse. He was worried that the injury would remove him from the mission and reported that he went to a civilian doctor in nearby Rosamond, who taped his ribs.[22][Note 2] Yeager told only his wife, as well as friend and fellow project pilot Jack Ridley, about the accident. On the day of the flight, Yeager was in such pain that he could not seal the X-1's hatch by himself. Ridley rigged up a device, using the end of a broom handle as an extra lever, to allow Yeager to seal the hatch.
Yeager broke the sound barrier on October 14, 1947, flying the X-1 at Mach 1.07 at an altitude of 45,000 ft (13,700 m) over the Rogers Dry Lake in the Mojave Desert. Yeager was awarded the MacKay and Collier Trophies in 1948 for his mach-transcending flight, and the Harmon International Trophy in 1954. The X-1 he flew that day was later put on permanent display at the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum.
Yeager went on to break many other speed and altitude records. He was also one of the first American pilots to fly a MiG-15, after its pilot, No Kum-sok, defected to South Korea.[27][28] Returning to Muroc, during the latter half of 1953, Yeager was involved with the USAF team that was working on the X-1A, an aircraft designed to surpass Mach 2 in level flight. That year, he flew a chase aircraft for the civilian pilot Jackie Cochran, a close friend, as she became the first woman to fly faster than sound.

The Air Force was less than one month old when Yeager broke the sound barrier.
He lived an amazing life. Full of not only many years but many accomplishments. He will be missed.
Just re reading his auto biography. He signed it twice. Once, on the back, then again on the front. "To Ken. Good luck,..Chuck Yeager" Probably the only one in existence he signed twice. Awesome guy.

He should be put the rest with his broom handle. Whenever I visit the Smithsonian, I have to visit Glamorous Glennis. The first book I ever read was the account of this flight. A true hero.

The man that helped chuck out and shook his hand was my greatgrandpa I never got a chance to meet him before he passed away so this is really cool to see :) thank you for posting this clip

Apart from the fact that the British were a lot closer to breaking the sound barrier than america. As allies, the US contacted Britain and asked for a trade of information, so it could be a joint venture. Britain trusted america and sent the research. America didnt reciprocate, and broke the sound barrier, claiming it as their own. But they dont teach you that in your schools.Bit like Concorde really,if america dont win they lie, google it, or i can send you links.

RIP and long live Chuck Yeager (February 13, 1923 - December 7, 2020), aged 97 You will always be remembered as a legend.

The right stuff... Real heroes are humble. RIP, Mister Yeager.
My grandfather remembers him piloting an F-80 through Charleston, WV on October 10, 1948. Thing is, he was supposed to just fly over the city. Instead, he flew under the South Side Bridge at 450 miles an hour, and turned to wave at the people of Charleston. He's a "good ol' country boy" according to my grandfather.
*I never heard of Chuck Yeager until today 3/30/2017. This is the kind of stuff they should teach in history classes and science classes. Thanks for posting*

It takes real men like Mr. Yeager to make history. My uncle was a RCAF and was shot down and taken prisoner months before the war was over. Frank didn't talk about his war experiences until nearly the end of his life.Frank flew the Hawker Hurricane. After seeing Mr Yeager and his great career I wish my uncle was still with us(he passed one year ago), I have more questions for him RIP Frank C Johnson
General Chuck Yeager was definitely an aviation pioneer AND legend. Earlier today I watched the movie "The Right Stuff" in which Yeager was played by Sam Shepard and breaking the sound barrier was part of the movie. Even Yeager had a small part in the movie. R.I.P General.

With a broken collar bone suffered the day before at the Happy Bottom Riding Club, treated by a local veterinarian. This is the stuff legends are made of.

@@cf6282 Riding his horse at night and someone closed the gate. He busted two ribs when he went down. Ridley cut a broom handle that gave him the mechanical advantage he needed to close the hatch on the X-15.

@Mark Grudt You can't make that stuff up can you? 'The Right Stuff' was an extraordinary film although I don't think Tom Wolfe and the film treated Gus Grissom very well.
Sometime between 1988 and 1992 the A&E network had a series called "BIOGRAPHY" and one time they did a show about Chuck Yeager breaking the sound barrier. I quickly called my sister, and told her to watch it. She asked me why I thought that she would be interested in it. I told her that what she was watching was October 14, 1947... The very day/date she was born! I asked her "How many people get to see what happened the day they were born?"
RIP Chuck Yeager, passed just bf 9p yesterday, 12/8.

It's Gates foundation - common core version of math is taught to make children lose interest and be overwhelmed with process and theory, while practicality and application are at best, tools to promote Google, Microsoft and the credit industry among others. State of the art gear for 1946. General Yeager knew he would break the mach. A few Americans change the world for the better. Yeager was a true warrior in every sense of the word. My father in was an Air Plane Mechanic during WW2, I have many of his old books. Been a fan of Chuck Yeager, at his passing I just re-read his autobiography published in 1986. What an amazing life. Crazy that he outlived his first wife by 30 years and outlived one of his sons. RIP General Yeager.
Great video. I got to see and hear* Chuck Yeager break the sound barrier a few times in the mid 90s while I was a teenager. Me and my dad would go to the annual Edwards Air Force base air show an hour or two away from Los Angeles every year for a couple years in a row. It was always a treat to see that! I love your channel.

Today is March 1, 2020, and Chuck Yeager is still alive. He turned 97 years old two weeks ago. I was 3 years old when he broke the sound barrier, and I am just hoping to out live him.
He put the wild in wild blue yonder! RIP General Yeager.
Test pilots at muroc had a 1 in 4 fatality rate. He not only survived years of testing everything, but he was top dawg so he was given all the highest profile (i.e. dangerous) programs, and he still made it through. I’m sure there was some luck involved, but he must have been damned good.

I only met him once, when he was hired to do a short video for the AARP. He was difficult to work with. Always challenging everything. It felt like he was looking for any weakness and seeing any advantages. Not for any good reason but that's how he operated and probably that hyper alertness kept him alive when he was in combat or testing airplanes.

Chuck Yeager was from West Virginia, and lived in East Liverpool Ohio for awhile not to far from football coach Lou Holtz. His Nephew Steve Yeager played baseball at Meadowdale high school in Dayton Ohio while growing up and later was the main catcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1970s.
R.I.P. to an absolute badass.

Theodore von Karman brought back a treasure trove of supersonic data from the German Luftfahrtforschungsanstalt high speed research labs in Brauschweig. It was the only large diameter supersonic wind facility in world during WW2

OCT 1947 = actual event JUN 1948 = made public JAN 1949 = first US Postal cover...
The Bell XS-1 incorporated many concepts from the Miles M.52 including the cockpit-adjustable tailplane incidence mechanism. Despite General Yeager’s assertion that he and Lt. Jackie L Ridley built this into the aircraft. Sure, they worked out that adjusting the whole tailplane in flight was the clue to exceeding the speed of sound. Drawings of the XS-1 clearly show the mechanism and the sliding plates on the inboard stabiliser ends.

FALSE, Britain did not invent the Horizontal Stabilator, itsbeen around since the Wright Flyer. The Messerschmitt Me-262 was the first jet aircraft to use a fly-by-wire Horizontal Stabilator system to counteract the effects of compressiblity and Mach tuck in high transonic flight. Thanks to Jack Riddleys former teacher, Theodore von Karman he was given the data on the Me-262 and built a nearly exact copy of the Me-262's analog fly-by-wire Horizontal Stabilator system used to control the Bell X-1 at the speed of sound.
