From 1983: Chuck Yeager on "The Right Stuff"

Test pilot Chuck Yeager, the first man to break the sound barrier, died on Monday, December 7 at age 97. Seen the movie. Liked it a lot. Lived through some of those times and I recall that you'd see or hear on the radio or TV snippets of these doings. It's likely hard to understand for the newer generations that the math that made all of this possible was done with, more or less, with a sheet of paper a pencil, and a pocket slide rule. Them were the days indeed.

He made General because he was an inspiration to everyone including politicians.

Chuck Yeager was a true American hero. First human to fly at supersonic speed way back in 1947. 73 years ago. It would’ve been nice if NASA had given him a chance later in life to fly on the space shuttle like they did John Glenn.

Chuck Yeager was on the US government committee to select the first astronauts in the 1950s .He was part of the group that setup NASA back then it was called NACA. Chuck Yeager helped Pakistan airforce to defeat Indian airforce in 1971 Indo-pakistan. India won war and destroyed Chucks aircraft on the ground. He may have been a good test pilot but he was no good general in airwar.
