Hi Leena, what you say about uniforms is really interesting to me, because I'm from South Africa. As a previous British colony most of our schools use uniforms too (there are some private schools that don't but all gvt schools do and most of the posh private schools too) and one of the reasons they do is to remove the class divide. You don't have kids turning up to school in brand clothes: everyone wears the same shit uniform. As someone who was homeschooled until grade 10, getting to wear a uniform was lovely to me. It removed so much unnecessary thinking about clothes and what to wear during the week and I saved a lot on clothes too.

Yup, I definitely did the whole "this doesn't really fit, but I've been meaning to lose weight anyways, and this will be a really great motivation"-thing. One of the important markers of adulthood for me, has been choosing not to do that anymore.

This was fascinating, and really enjoyable. I think you're totally right, that we pick the things that we want to engage with, and we don't have to stress ourselves out taking part in things that we really don't care about. Also, "act like a wasteman, that's not me." I'm dead.

Loved this video. I have a 'one in, one out' rule with all of my clothes which helps a lot to stop them from building up over time. It also means that I have to make a decision about whether or not what I want to buy is actually nicer than something I already own and stops a lot of 'I feel bad, maybe consumerism will help' days.

One thing that really helps me with clearing out is having a charity in mind while sorting out my clothes. Last time it was the local youth shelter. If I'm going through clothes only based on whether they fit/I wear them often I always think "What if I end up needing it sometime?" and it stays in my wardrobe. But thinking about how that piece of clothing could benefit someone else more, and see more use, rather than sitting in your closet waiting to be used once or twice, really helps me to decide to get rid of it.

The thing about uniform is that in a school environment, it kinda makes everyone equal. The kids who can afford to buy more/more expensive/cooler clothes have less ability to look down upon those who don’t. Also, uniform is often A LOT cheaper for a lot of parents

Interested in your thoughts on uniforms, as a child I hated them but as I got older I grew to appreciate that it kind of levelled the playing field a lot in terms of some kids being able to have more of the newest most stylish clothes and some not, and uniforms meaning I didn't have to worry about it every day before school. Although as soon as I got out of a uniformed environment I did also get very experimental with style like THIS IS REAL THIS IS MEEEE

I've had this pile of clothes that've I've been meaning to get rid of for so long sitting on the floor in my room that mold litterally grew on it. !i've managed to salvage most of it and now it's on the floor again, still waiting for me to put it up for sale online. This video really resonated, these clothes are cluttering my appartment, it's taking space in my mind when I keep thinking I should put them for sale. When, really, I don't need the money, people much worse off than me could benefit, or other people could like them. So there, I'm chucking them out tomorrow, and giving away a whole other bunch of clothes shortly. I might need to talk to myslef while I do that, this looked kinda fun. Thanks.

I have been really happy, when Finnish army shop (Varusteleka) decided to manufacture their own jeans. One option for men and one for woman. They fit so well (which I knew before hand, because the sizing in the different parts of the jeans was told so well in the webpage!) and I know, they are not going anywhere. They will sell them for years. When those I have will broke down, I can by again the same pair. So wonderful. Always hated buying jeans, because they they fit so rarely and quality-price ratio is so poor.

I regularly clear out my wardrobe about every 6 months, not a lot just stuff i've grown out of/don't wear any more but my wardrobe is still pretty big tbh. I'm a really sentimental person and will just keep stuff because of the memories even if it doesn't fit me anymore and even though i love the idea of minimalism i just don't see it working for me rn (defo could be rallied round though!). I also have a complex relationship with clothes, being 6ft and mostly legs it's pretty hard to find clothes in regular high street shops or even online let alone in charity shops/fair trade stuff that actually make me feel good about myself and fit etc. But this was a really interesting process to watch and I definitely want to do another wardrobe clear out now and has made me think about how many clothes I buy, love this!

I hate clothes. Shopping for me isn't about finding things that look nice it's about finding things that fit (not easy as a plus size woman) and that don't make me want to cry. I want to be able to forget about my clothes when I'm wearing them and not be uncomfortable. I therefore avoid it until I absolutely need something and then I'm miserable when I spend a day trying on everything in the plus size shops and nothing is ok.

  • @tiffbott41

I used to hoard vintage clothes. especially if they were cheap finds from charity shops or eBay. I eventually realised i hated almost all of them. SO had a huge clear out. Then I found Kon Marie and did it again and then I found the Minimalists and did it again. I currently still feel like i have too many clothes. It is so strange how much my mind has alters from this hoarding mentality to now feeling ok that i could id walk around in the same outfit all week. I also wanted to say... clothes do make us self conscience. I honestly think everyone looks better naked and once you get passed the 'I'm naked" fear and get to know yourself naked it really is a calmer place to be. After a shower sit in your naked ness. DO your face naked. lie on top of your bed naked. You'll be amazing how good you feel.

I started trying to pare down my clothes about 2 years ago, and i challenged myself not to buy any new clothes from september to april ish. it was so hard at the beginning, but by the end I got rid of so many things because when you take away the endless possibilities of what you could buy, you end up getting to know your style and the things you really appreciate. Fast forward to like 2 days ago, after relapsing and decluttering time and time again... I now have a really small wardrobe, but I LOVE everything in it, so i don't get that feeling that I have nothing to wear! I still sometimes wonder what to wear, but because I love it all so much that i can't choose between them and that's a nice feeling :)

But this video, makes me feel a little less bad, knowing that other people feel the exact same way about clothes. I especially loved the part where you spoke about having clothes yet not being able to find something to wear, and it being more about how you feel rather than not having the "right" item. This was such a great video :)

I don't know why this appeared in my feed but I was in Year 11 in Early 2017 and decluttered OBSESSIVELY. At the time, my mum bought me a lot of clothes that I couldn't wear due to certain sensory issues but I also gave away a lot of clothes that I liked. Teenage brains are more receptive to the rewards of their actions and my school rewarded me for being generous by giving things to the charity collection (aka, I could go to prom). I hardly had any clothes left. It has almost been a decade and I regret it. I really wish I had kept everything and started saving when I got my first job. I've had nicer clothes since, which I have also bought second hand, so I shouldn't. I didn't declutter until the age of 21/22 when I finished my BA and started my MSc, as some things no longer fit. I bought some second hand clothes recently and I'll ensure that I keep them for 20+ years. I have some clothes that I have owned since college and secondary school though. It's so frustrating to have cardigans, tops and hoodies that go bobbly, hard and rough. It doesn't happen to me as much as it used to. Probably because I was my clothes less.

LOVED this! I had an almost identical relationship with clothes as a teenager, and I'm still going through the process of changing my relationship with clothes to be more sustainable and healthy. I am someone who really cares about clothes, but not enough to constantly buy new things and looks after a lot of clothes, so I'm still filling in the gaps of clothes I actually want to wear after I've gotten rid of clothes that I really don't want to wear any more. Would love to see more videos from you about minimalism!

This is so inspiring! Thank you for sharing your thought processes 🧡 That thing of "I only look good because I'm wearing these particular clothes" really resonated with me. This past year I've finally stopped caring about the fact I'm different sizes in different shops and bought the items I feel most comfortable in whether that's a size 12 or a size 16 and i feel so much more confident because of it. It's been so liberating. (My favourite colour is purple too) 😃

This is so God Damn Relatable!!!!!!! I can’t even tell you how many things I was saying ‘Yes!’ to during this video. Thoroughly enjoyed this and all the little insights. I feel a little less alone in the thoughts I have of clothing and fashion now haha

Very late to see this but honestly what you say about how days look the same and how you used to make each day feel different with a different outfit and now try and make days feel different by reading new things and developing yourself resonates with me SO much!

You've really inspired me to clear out my wardrobe! I took so much to the charity shop last time I moved but I still feel like there's too much (probably because I have a smaller wardrobe now). I need to stop clinging onto the clothes that I wore all the time at university. It's been quite a few years now, and I know that more clothes =/= more style

I've made similar videos about clearing out my wardrobe and I feel the same. I still have so many clothes but I've noticed I've drastically slowed down from buying clothes in 2017. Each year I reduce what I'm buying so I'm slowly getting to the place I believe I should in. I also started to become more conscious about how many times I wear something and how much money I waste on those clothes if I don't wear them. I'm glad to see you posting more videos again, Leena!

You probably won't even notice this comment as it's almost a year later but anyway: Wear. Maternity. Jeans. I'm a wheelchair user and oh my days maternity jeans are the best. They fit when sitting the same as when standing. There's room for the post-food bloat. I love them.

Leena, I hope you don’t take this the wrong way. When you talk about making sustainable life and clothing choices you sound really Christian. And, I mean this in the most good kind of balanced Christian way possible - I love your passion for people and taking care of them. It is really inspiring and humble and makes me feel like I could change my ways and do something to help too. You’re amazing.

I’ve always struggled to get rid of things, and have never had any desire for minimalism really. However, this has gotten so much worse since my mum died. Every time I try to do a clear out there are so many items of clothing that my mum either bought for me, saw me in or owned herself. It’s been over 3 years so there are more and more things I can’t part with, or put in a charity bag, then remove a few days later because of the guilt/fear of losing tiny memories attached to them. I think mainly it’s a fear of not being the person I was when she knew me, and while I know that is the reason it doesn’t make it any easier to overcome.

Leena I love this! I've recently lost a lot of weight and I've gone very crazy buying new clothes that suit my new figure and make me feel good. I had a massive clear out of my bigger clothes but I've just replaced them all. Even though everything I've bought has been from charity shops, I've bought things I don't need just for the sake of it. This has inspired me to be more careful and to have a proper clear out!

This is cool. What I have done with t-shirts that I like but dont look good in before is to make cushion covers out of them, so that I still have that association but dont have to wear it...

Me too! I love the idea of being able to pack your life into a suitcase and just take up less space in general with all my stuff. I think all my stuff is still in boxes from the last time I moved countries and six months is hopefully enough time to gain perspective on what I really need. I'm hoping that when I go home in a couple of months I can do the same and donate half my clothes.

this was such a soothing way to spend the first half an hour of this new year! also thank you for touching on class in this, i feel like that is often lacking in the discussions of minimalism/councious consumerism.
