    Another great video! I had the same thing, I bought a used 300C. I pulled the head and oil pan while it was still in the car, honed out the cylinder with a three finger hone just as you did. I had a blown engine from a Ram 2500 so a scavenged the head and piston out of that, reworked the head a little (lapped the valves and installed the springs from the car). Put it all back together and I reused everything including the head gaskets (don't recommend doing that but I was on a super tight budget). I drove the car for over two years, over 100 000 KM (60 000+ miles) with absolutely no issues. The timing chain tensioner did eventually let go and the timing chain sawed halfway through the oil pump...lol. I changed the engine out and a friend of mine is still driving that car to this day! I do like the newer Hemi (they have their issues, but what engine doesn't) As you are doing it much better than myself (using new gaskets and what not) I am pretty sure you will be good to go for a long while!

    So I'm watching this series before I start the rebuild on my 2012 Ram 1500. Post hone - I didn't really notice the 45° crosshatch I hear everyone talking about. There was a pattern but it seemed to be almost at 0°. Is the 45° that important or just a crosshatch of some sort. I've even seen people recommend ball honing in two directions in order to insure the crosshatch.

  • @ReignitedAuto

    @ReignitedAuto

    3 жыл бұрын

    Using a ball hone rather than a 3 stone hone helps to achieve that crosshatch look. The only true way to get a real crosshatch is to have a machine shop do a hone job with the actual tool. That being said, it's not really that critical, what you are looking to do is knock the glaze from the cylinder walls that way the new position rings have a surface to bed into. 👍

    Just wanted to ask you as a guy with a ton of experience on Chrysler products (and since you had a bottle of it as lubricant). What is your opinion on the "lifetime fluid" in the 8 speed transmissions and do you think there is actually any risk in using another fluid that is zf lifeguard 8 compatible?

  • @ReignitedAuto

    @ReignitedAuto

    3 жыл бұрын

    That's actually a great question. My primary skillset as a dealer tech was as a transmission specialist so I saw a lot of what worked/didn't work. As a general rule, I don't believe in "lifetime" fluids. HOWEVER, the ZF 8 spd was originally designed for the BMW 7 series back in 2007, so they've really had a chance to refine it over the years. I would say that it is the MOST reliable transmission that FCA uses in their vehicles. Fluid changes in the 8 spd are very expensive, not only because of how much the fluid costs, but the trans filter is built into the bottom of the pan, so you have to buy a new pan as well. You're looking at $800+ for a trans service on one of these things, and in my experience, they're either working or not working. Basically the only two things I've done to these transmissions is to replace the valve body, or the entire trans. The last time I took one apart was at Chrysler training several years ago. From what I've seen, even units with over 100K miles on them, the trans fluid still looks to be in good shape. As to the question of using another fluid, as long as you do find a fluid that specifically says it's safe to use in that transmission, no I don't think there's any issue with that. 👍

    @@ReignitedAuto thanks for your reply... I did quite a bit of research myself on this topic and looked around locally. I found a local oil change shop (great canadian oil change) that has a machine which "exchanges" the fluid instead of "flushing" it. They put a wand into your pan through the fill hole and the machine sucks out 1 liter, then pumps 1 back in. They do this for 30 - 40 mins with the vehicle running the entire time. This has the advantage of not needing to open the drain plug (which are known to strip/break fairly easily being plastic)..this method uses your own tranny pump to circulate the fluid so no pressuring fluid through forcing it past components..(which some people think is bad for the tranny). This method gets 95% of the fluid out and also gets around the thermostatic bypass valve which prevents the normal flush procedure/machine.. this cost $200ca and it includes 15L of vavoline maxlife (which luckily for me happened to be the fluid I wanted to go with). However if you wanted to use your own fluid you can bring whatever you want... then it costs $150ca. I was talking to someone in a jeep forum recently who said he bought a replacement for $29... I was EXTREMELY skeptical because I had done a fair amount of research and ended up buying a pan from rockauto (dorman) for $170. I warned him that something seemed wrong so this morning he sent me the link www.ebay.com/itm/68233701AA-Auto-Transmission-Oil-Pan-For-Ram-1500-Chrysler-300-with-8HP70-845RE/264645659904?hash=item3d9e1c4d00:g:JrsAAOSwAUBeU2wE I was absolutely astonished to see this as it appears to have the same gasket material as mine, all 4 magnets, and even appears to come with a metal drain plug... he is going to report on how it fits/ works but if it works it definitely brings the cost of a service down to the $100 - $200 range (depending on the fluid/method you choose)... Im very curious to hear his follow up!

Many times if a misfire in one cylinder is bad enough it'll register in multiple cylinders at once, giving you the multiple cylinder misfire code. Perform a compression test on all 8 cylinders and get back to me 👍

    Depends of course on several factors: how deep you go into rebuilding and what all parts you use. But if it's just a cam/lifter job you're generally looking at around $3500-4500, anything more than that the price goes up. 👍

    Do I need to use loctite on the bolts holding in the crankshaft? Can I reuse the bolts too?

    No loctite needed on the bolts, and yes you can eye the main cap bolts 👍

    @@ReignitedAuto Awesome! I appreciate the response. I’m in bit of trouble with my Hemi. I had a lifter failure and a piece of it is jammed up against the block and the crankshaft, making me unable to spin it to remove it from the torque converter / trans. Is there a way to slightly move the crankshaft to maybe wiggle it and get that piece to fall out? I’m scared to pull it with the torque converter and risk damaging my transmission, but I don’t see any other option. All I need is to get the crank to wiggle slightly to yank that piece out. Once I do that, new lifters, new camshaft and it’s back running.

    @@ReignitedAuto I’m almost wondering if I can just put a flat trans jack under the trans pan, keep it level, and unbolt the crankshaft from the engine, while the engine is hoisted up. Then, just lift the engine up without the crank, having somebody hold the crank to keep stress off the trans shaft and then just slide the crank, flywheel and torque converter off the trans and then re assemble it.

    Just a 3-stone hone you can get from Napa Auto parts. Works really well I've had it for a long time. You can also go with the ball type hones, but I find that this style being spring loaded is a little more aggressive and works quicker to take out marks in cylinder walls.
