@@MASJYT well to be fair, square lost a lot of the source code for many of their older games.

I play on PC after so many years and for me this is a great opportunity to play my favorite game again in a higher resolution and with the same picture, this is a real gift to a fan

I play Chrono Cross Radical Dreamer’s Edition on my Switch Lite and I think it looks absolutely stunning. Other than a few minor framerate issues, which may have been present in the PS1 version, it runs like a horse and I love it.

@@schadenfreude6274 perhaps. But I also am someone who appreciates older games. I see old games as classic the same way someone may appreciate an old Mustang versus a new one. Sure, it doesn’t have the same bells and whistles as new cars do, but it’s still beautiful. That’s how I see a lot of older games. Chrono Cross just looks like it had a little polish on it and that’s okay with me.

I've never played Chrono Cross (I was hoping this remaster would get me into it). But behind the laziness is a fantastic game. You don't need to be so smug about other people's choices. The game looks just like the same, back then you see the game how the remaster is today lol

I loved the original so much. I was on the fence, but I think I'm likely going to pick this up.

Let me guess, you want the GTA Definitive treatment, the "Lets make everything super high resolution with reflections everywhere so it isn't even recognisable compared to the original game". Or the silly bluepoint treatment. This is the truest looking remaster I've ever seen, regained my confidence that it is possible to have a good remaster.

This is really nice but I have an issue with some of these remasters. The remaster ends up looking like how I remember it so I am not excited until I see the comparison. Weird how that works.

Yeah, they're a bit low res, but the animation is fluid and the colours and visual design are great

There's a fill modes who makes the remaster a lot better. Like snooty a.i upscale.

Remaster looks and plays fantastically to me. Only minor issues with the BGs that are still objectively better on modern flat screen TVs than the originals. Plus 16:9 resolution, plus HD sound, plus it was never released in Europe, plus Radical Dreamers was never released on anything but the Japan-only sattellaview famicom peripheral. And as for the framerate, it’s marginally worse than the original hardware, will likely get patched out, AND it’s perfection is completely unnecessary for a turn-based RPG from 23 years ago.

Never played Chrono but this is the best remaster I've ever seen, a remaster, not a total overhaul like all others that have been released

I heard PC version was even worse handled, 10GB ram usage for a an old PS 1 game. shame though, this game was so good and listening to the music brought all sorts of nostalgia

The AI upscale backgrounds look great. It's not the same, no, but it looks like beautiful paintings. It's great in its own different way

A great game; plus, the best soundtrack, I think.

In an alternate reality where video game industry didn't flourish this is the jump in fidelity between 4 generations.

SO I agree that some of the upscaled backgrounds look like they were upscaled, but I think in many cases high resolution original assets were rescanned (backgrounds) or recompiled (FMV) unless upscaling AI has really come so far

You should check out the moguri mod for ffix. It's all ai upscaled and it looks amazing. I think the guy who made it released several concept images for chrono cross too and they looked crazy good. Really the ai is just a tool and it can work magic in the right hands, but I don't think square enix did the best job in this remaster. It looks very obvious that it was upscaled by ai in a lot of areas.

I own both versions of this and I've played it on an emulator. The new version suffers from distortion when in wide screen plus an emulated version with an openGL filter looks better in my opinion.

It looks amazing! They really did it justice in my opinion.

Modders to the rescue!!! :) Already there are many mods to improve and fix lots of the major issues this remaster has... and a lot more to come! Its still sad that we have to rely on the amazing talent of unpaid people to fix what a multi million dollar company cannot be bothered to do...

@Ryan Vetter I pretty much agree... yet, It has happened that I have replayed some games... Always with my wife because she had not played those titles back then... We played both FF9 and FF10 remakes on Steam... with mods that made them both so insanely better than anything else anywhere :) In the case of Chrono, we played ALL of them (including the chrono trigger unofficial sequel flames of eternity with an orchestral soundtrack) back in 2016, so we wouldn't be playing this again so soon... :)

I hate this kind of remaster. I know they just upscale the old pre rendered background, but at least do a proper cleanup after that. sorry to say, but everything in Termina looks awful. the fence, floor, shop sign, etc, ugh. the water is actually improved a lot tho.

Please turn up the background volume a bit more 😂

My only want was for the remaster was the Guile as you know who story added. Other than that I’m enjoying the game thus far.

It’s absolutely worth it if you don’t mind reading a lot since there’s no voice acting. It’s one my top three games, you’ll never forget the story, music, or characters after you play it, it’s one of the most memorable games.

It has to be because when the monster came out of the water it was much more jittery then original

Personally think the remaster looks great. I hope they can improve performance, but it’s still hitting me in the feels over 20 years since I played the ps1 classic.

i miss pre rendered backgrounds so much

I LOVE it but theirs a few BOSS changes ie Bunyips Red innate form in the remaster NEVER uses Volcano so its only possible to trap it on the PS1 version on the Remaster the Sky/White dragon NEVER uses Ultra Nova the remaster replaced it with a MAGIC Negate turn instead.

they just needed to press the SHARP button a few times for the FMVs, seriously.

That original Square soft logo on the original already got the remaster beat and no amount of remastering can change that 😂

I feel like it gets a pass, not perfect but worth it for the price. They need to fix the frame rates though that's my one qualifier.

That's why SE do what they do. There's always someone who think this isn't bad enough. This should not get a pass, SPECIALLY when the game is extremely accessible due to its nature.

Of course it does. In the original, artists worked within the limitations to create certain perception of the world, where each element complements others. In this remake, there's no "vision" for this world, it's just "hi-rez this", "hi-poly that". No one in the team cares that pixelated 3D models used to smoothly blend into pixelated flat background; now they stick out like a sore thumb. And camera angles of the original were picked according to the tech, they're simply wrong for new tech. Also, when you see a blur of pixels, your imagination easily fills in the details. With clearly barebone 3D models it just doesn't work the same way.

just play the original on epsxe use reshade and turn the GFX up.... far superior than any remake

I wasn't ever into Chrono Cross, but wow am I taken aback by how good this remaster is. It's given me confidence that remasters can actually be done without changing the atmosphere and feel of the original, as is the case with every remaster ever in the past 10 years or so other than Red Faction Guerilla.

I prefer the look of the original. I don't think the remaster is bad it is simply my humble opinion and preference...

Is the emulator only work on pc?

In my own personal opinion they probably would have been better off doing a remake that copied the game entirely and gave it a lot more details to the environment and characters themselves while keeping the combat and dialogue the same throughout! Not to say that it looks awful because it really doesn’t but I would have liked to see them push the visual aspects farther than they did.

Pushing the visuals is what ruins remasters for the majority who played them I think. This is the first remaster I've ever seen that has truly stayed faithful to the original look.

For starters, it was never available in EU regions before. Radical Dreamers is released for the first time in the states. On my Switch, it’s portable. And it’s also a great game worth future-proofing.

I was going to write a nasty review but it turns out any progress to me is a plus. Maybe someday the graphics will be amazing, I'm happy they did get rid of Serges' mustache looking thing lol

Original looks better, especially on old scanline tv's. Upscaled smoothed backgrounds just miss hand crafted details

Lazy compared to what? All the backwards remasters that totally change the game to essentially being a different game altogether, I'd have this type of remaster over that any day, and it was only $20 as well, not 60 or 70. How much the GTA Definitive edition again? That's right.

A joke remastered.

The only real work they have done is on portrait illustrations and on the used font set (they remade it). The AI Background upscaling and polygons rendering at HD are things that the best emulators already do. This version is not worth 20 bucks. 10 at best.

Grove Street games could have done a better job than this mess.

considering how The HD trilogy was at launch? No. However I do admit Square Enix if they cared enough absolutely could've made a remaster so good that any fan projects would be rendered obsolete in comparison (although data loss from their old stuff as they didn't care to preserve it probably would've prevented it) and we know if given the right time, an AI could be trained to do better remasters combined with skilled artists touching up the AI upscaled result to create a genuinely better looking game.

@@juanbonkers6090 perhaps an example of a better remaster project is needed, cause yeah you can emulate at higher resolutions but those backgrounds, portraits and text are 2d elements, additionally the remaster seems to be using better overworld character models, not sure how far Chrono Cross modding has progressed.

It's a remaster that's only been upscaled from 720 to 1080. This might be a bad remake, but it's by no means the worst. By the way, you're Brazilian right? You should know what a bad thing is...

This is a game that most people haven't even heard of until now , so it doesn't deserve a remaster.
