How would you determine the status of the pt. with COPD exacerbation if you're opting to not take the diagnostic gold standard of FEV1 and instead swapping it with ABG?

I was just diagnosed with small airway disease and stage 2 copd was a smoker for years I quit with vaping which I’m sure slowed it down a bit but still was doing damage now I guess I have to make the best of the time I have left
