I picked up one of these as soon as they let me, and I've been using it few a few days now... it's fantastic. Love the "For You" view that aggregates content from all of our services in one location, and being able to search them all at once is fantastic. My wife loves the "new little remote" since it can also change inputs, turn the tv on/off, and control volume. Best, and least expensive, streaming dongle/box I've ever purchased.

As always, love Lon's review videos. Clean, straight forward, to the point. No fancy comedy or melodrama. Thanks!

2 things not mentioned ,you can connect a camera and use full duplex DUO , Google added it to the Android TV play store a couple months back Also I heard the remote for this device has a gyroscope that has not been implemented yet

I was wondering if this new chromecast can CAST from your phone and you made it clear and said YES, IT DOES and show your phone casting content from Netflix. That’s all I needed to know. Fantastic review, answered all of my questions and more

Just subscribed, a really good review touched on what it can do without going too deep and losing people and gave enough info for me to go deeper myself on what I want to do with it. I'm in the UK so waiting on mine should be here by the end of the week, only downer is cost, it's £60 here about $78 but putting that against the time I expect to be using it it's not that bad.

Great video! Loving mine, also hoping the interface comes to shield soon. One subtle difference that u didn't mention in the casting section is when you cast content like youtube or netflix for an app u already have installed on the device instead of just launching the generic cast instance with minimal control (play and pause) it actually launches the actual app and plays the video within the app so you have continued control with your phone but also full remote control support since you are in the app. So if you click "back" with the remote it takes you back to the show or movie overview page and back again takes you back to the app. Instead of kicking you all the way back to home. It seems well done and best of both worlds to me especially since I like cueing up KZread videos with my phone.

For anyone looking to duplicate the hard wired ethernet connection Lon shows in this video, be aware that the power block that comes with this device will not power the setup he shows using the Belkin ethernet to usb-c adapter. You will need something like the "Anker - PowerPort Atom USB Type-C Wall Charger" to power the Chromecast device with the demonstrated hardwired setup. You will get a screen on your TV showing that the Chromecast is underpowered if you try to use the power block that comes in the package.

Great review. I am pretty much platform agnostic and I have an Apple TV, Fire TV, Roku devices etc. I got one of these on announcement day (I think Target put them on shelves too early) and I have been using it for a couple of weeks. I really love this device. I think they have really hit the perfect combination of functionality and price. My expectations were pretty low, especially since this is the first generation of this device and it is only $50 but with the exception of a few minor hiccups during setup, it works great. The issues I encountered were that it installed apps that I specifically unchecked as not wanting and Netflix crashed the first time I opened it, possibly because the device had not been officially released. Neither of those things were a big deal. I did notice this morning that Disney+ was not working with the bluetooth headphones. That is probably more about the app than the device but hopefully they will fix it soon because I like to use headphones to watch TV early in the morning when everyone is sleeping.

@@bluewolf37777 in terms of interface, this is my favorite device by a lot and I have it on our 65 inch family room tv. Google’s hooks into the apps are amazing. When I open it up, it shows me pretty much anything I have been watching on the Home Screen. I have kids so a lot of times I start watching something, get interested, get interrupted, then forget about it. Their suggestions are solid too. The interface a fast and smooth etc. The only thing that is getting annoying is that Disney+ and HBO are still not connecting to my Bluetooth headphones. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt and say it could be my headphones, although I have tried 2 different sets, echo buds and $20 genuine plastic Amazon ones. The WORST device I have is the Amazon Fire cube. I have had so many problems with it starting with the fact that my AMAZON Echo Buds will not pair with it. It also always searches with the app that is open. If my tv has KZread open but not playing a video and I ask “Alexa,what’s the weather?” She says “searching KZread for what’s the weather” smh. That is just a couple problems of many. I’m convinced it is possessed and is the beginning of skynet taking over.

If, like me, you don't want all the screen clutter, recommendations, etc., you can enable APPS ONLY MODE. Settings > Accounts > Apps Only Mode > Continue Before that, you may want to drop down to "Search for Apps" to install (1) Mix-Apps (2) WiFi File Explorer and (3) APKMirror installer. (1) Mix-apps is a secondary launcher that shows ALL of your apps, supported or not. (2) WiFi File Explorer is a much better and easier way to download sidechain apps using a PC web interface instead of the clunky Downloader app. WFE acts as a simple temporary "no-action" CC-GTV server, allowing all file transfer action to be managed from a nice web page interface. (3) APKM-I Is an easy way to install downloaded apps and then delete APK files once installed to free up limited storage space on the CC-GTV dongle.

Great video! I also wanted to know is there any way you can get a Nest Doorbell notification on the Chromecast Google TV? Like it shows on the Nest Home Hub, ie you can see the stream of the Doorbell as soon as someone rings the doorbell.

I've been very happy with the Plex support. It has handled 4K rips with ease. I don't use more than stereo sound (headphones lugged in to TV) so lossless audio support hasn't effected me. It's working better than Roku or AppleTV.

What is the resolution of photos and videos when you cast them from your phone? The current chromecast is limited to 1080p. Hopefully this new chromecast allows for 4K

I would sync the TiVo stream 4k remote on it for channel change. Some buttons don't work but channel change and number pad are all I needed. Sling TV pushing airtv mini which integrated locast. Tho locast are being sued. But I was wondering if locast could be imported in my sling TV guides on other devices if I bought the Air TV mini.

I was going to buy this, but i got a Mi Box from my brother. installed all the updates and i gotta say, it's nice. I use it mostly for the Channels app with my HDHOMERUN. It has a great guide. Mine turns on with the remote EVERYTIME. lol. Those of you that know, know.

Based on this excellent video I just git the Chromecast with Google TV unit and got it set up over WifI. It works great. Also based on your recommendation, I bought the Belkin Ethernet-Power adapter you used, and that does not work. The Google unit appears to recognize the Belkin unit as an unknown/unauthorized power source and does not allow the app to run. I see that Google sells a different adapter so I will try that.

Does that ethernet adapter allow up to gigabit speeds? Or is it capped by the chromecast?

Are the external USB storage devices formatted in FAT32 or is exFAT also possible? would love to know this

All my questions answered, as always! I noticed that many people are reviewing the generic usb c hubs on Amazon and including if it worked or not so check the reviews. This is perfect for what I want - just a way to get Plex and KZread onto the bedroom TV. Another Shield is just overkill for that. I have had so many cheap Chinese boxes over the years. I never trusted them. Finally, we have something better at a reasonable price.

I've been using a pair of Monoprice BT headphones with it, and after pairing once, subsequent pairings are quick. Sound is great. Best part? When headphones paired all other audio is automatically suspended. Perfect solution for a quiet house when one is late-nite viewing.

It's a big question! I will try to answer you. Usb-c is the last generation of usb port you can get technically 10/Gbps(2 x speed of usb 3.0) With some laptop you can use usb-c to a display port or use with Externen graphic card if laptop support thunderbolt 3(40/Gbps)

Hello Lon, I just setup my chromecast Google tv and my issues is the when playing Netflix movies and tv series I don't get sound from my receiver and my avr have dolby atmos. I have Nvidia Shield and the setup on my sound is same and no issues on Nvidia but for this one. Please advised

The #1 feature that it seems to lack is the Google TV remote Android app is the ability to listen to TV through phone. This is the #1 feature I use on Roku. I know you can use Bluetooth but with Roku app I can listen to TV through Roku app and audio from a different app at the same time. This is the ONLY reason haven't bought Google TV so far. I'll jump on Reddit to see if there is a workaround.

Does the plex app allow you to acces DLNA content that is on your seperate plex server on the same network? Or would it all be remote access

I just bought one 3 days ago. It was a struggle getting it to work. Wifi internet would not work most times. I got it working finally and decided to unplug it since it gets super hot. I plug it back in no internet damn. I factory reset it and it works again for a bit. I go to sleep and I be damned if it didn't turn on by itself! Screen flickered badly and internet went in and out. I reset it one more time and reset it back to best buy and got another one. I will try one more time with this new one. I own roku, mi box, apple tv, and more. No issues with wifi troubles.

What USB-C hub do you recommend for Google Tv? i ordered a minix to add a keyboard and it didnt passthrough power at all. My Belkin ethernet adapter works great but I need a keyboard to log in to certain apps. Your advice is appreciated.

Lon, another wonderful review. I tell everyone I know to watch you. I have made many purchase decisions based on your reviews and have been satisfied each time. You probably get millions of comments and won't see mine. But I wonder if you can help me figure out why I can install the Google TV UI on my Mi Box and it works with no issues---but on my NVIDIA Shield it works poorly..I installed the same 2 APKs...On the NVIDIA Shield it goes into a loop on the home screen. If I open any app like KZread and press the home button...it goes slowly to the Google TV home screen but then back to the previously opened app. If I close all of my apps it just goes into a loop on the home screen. I love my Chromecast with Google TV mostly because of the great UI and functionality. I have seen many videos of people successfully installing on NVIDIA shield...but am I the only one who is having these problems? Again, works without any issues on my Mi Box. If you have the time, can you lead me to the direction? Any thoughts? Thank you sir.

it actually does have the real google play store, and theres 2 ways to get to it. one is deep in the settings, the easier way is to use voice to get to the google play store. Also, not sure if there was an update to fix it, but youtube does not playback at 4k, check stats and it will say its 1080p even tho your on a 4k tv.

Hi Lon, I couldn't get the Google play movies app to show up in apps list. When I search for it using the Google Assistant it will pull it up and it shows that it's installed but it isn't showing in my apps any ideas how I can get it to show up there?

Just so you know the 35% rating for night flyers on Netflix is not a score based on how well reviewed something is, it's only a score based on how likely Netflix thinks it is that you will enjoy it. You might see 35%, I might see 92%. That score is not a review based on opinions but only their guess as to how likely you are to enjoy it based on their algorithm of everything they know about what you enjoy watching. It's a very weird kind of rating but once people understand it it might sometimes be useful if you want to take a guess if you like something based on Netflix's opinion they have of you. I don't really use it too much but in general I find that rating is usually pretty accurate to the kind of stuff I do enjoy so maybe it's useful occasionally.

the For You section is region locked. Most only US will get it while many other countries don't. You missed that one which is a big reason why everyone bought this device but get a watered down version
